Depending on the exact file, security software may classify it as a potentially unwanted application (PUA), riskware, hacktool, trojan, or another malware category. Quarantine it, scan the computer, and restore activation through Microsoft or your organization’s IT department.
What KMSAuto Net is—and what it is not
KMSAuto Net is a third-party utility associated with unauthorized activation of Windows and Microsoft Office. It is unrelated to the legitimate Microsoft Key Management Service (KMS), except that it attempts to imitate or abuse KMS-based activation.

Microsoft KMS is a client-server activation system for organizations with eligible volume licensing and an authorized KMS host. It is not a public free-activation service for individual home users. Microsoft documents the enterprise model at its KMS activation guidance.
Unofficial packages may use names such as KMSAuto.exe, KMSAuto Net.exe, AutoPico.exe, Service_KMS.exe, or KMSpico_setup.exe. The same name can appear in different archives and repackaged installers, so two files called “KMSAuto Net” are not necessarily identical.

Why antivirus detects it
Microsoft Defender has documented detections including PUA:Win32/AutoKMS and HackTool:Win32/KMSAuto!MSR. Microsoft reports that observed AutoKMS samples can add startup-running files and install other software. Malwarebytes describes related detections as riskware or hacktools and documents scheduled-task names associated with KMS tools at RiskWare.KMS, RiskWare.AutoKMS, and HackTool.KMS.
- It modifies licensing components or protected system settings.
- It may create scheduled tasks, startup entries, services, or exclusions.
- It may require administrator privileges.
- Unofficial download sites may bundle adware or a trojanized installer.
- Its poor reputation increases detection even when a particular sample has no additional payload.
Is KMSAuto Net technically a virus?
“Virus” is a narrow term for malware that traditionally replicates by infecting other files. A detection does not establish that every KMSAuto Net file is a self-propagating virus. It does establish that the specific file or behavior is unsafe enough for the security product to flag.

Therefore, “not technically a virus” is not a safety verdict. Microsoft notes that remnants and system changes can remain after automatic removal, and a malicious distributor can add a payload to an otherwise recognizable activator package.

What to do when KMSAuto Net is detected
- Do not run it again. Never disable Defender or add the file to an exclusion merely because a forum calls the alert a false positive.
- Quarantine or remove the detection using your security product.
- Re-enable protection and update definitions.
- Run a full system scan. Microsoft’s KMSAuto guidance recommends updated definitions and a full scan because remnants may survive initial removal.
- If it was executed, run a second reputable on-demand scan. Malwarebytes documents scanning, quarantine, and rebooting as a remediation path.
- After rebooting, check for persistence: unfamiliar scheduled tasks, startup entries, services, browser extensions, altered Defender exclusions, and unexpected system changes.
- Protect accounts. If the program ran with administrator access or was active while you entered passwords, change email, banking, password-manager, and work credentials from a separate trusted device.
- Escalate if necessary. Disconnect the computer if suspicious activity continues. A qualified technician or clean Windows reinstall may be appropriate when security tools were disabled, unknown accounts appeared, or persistence cannot be ruled out.
If you only downloaded the file
If you never opened or extracted it, the risk is lower. Let the security product quarantine it, delete the download and scan the download location. Do not double-click an archive or its executables just to inspect them. A clean scan does not prove that a file was trustworthy, but an unexecuted download is materially different from an elevated program that completed successfully.
If you already ran it
It ran without administrator approval
Scan anyway. User-level startup items, browser changes, or other modifications may still have succeeded.
You approved administrator access
Handle the device as potentially compromised: complete the full-scan sequence, inspect persistence and exclusions, and change sensitive credentials from a clean device.

You disabled antivirus
Turn protection back on immediately, update it, and run a full scan followed by a second opinion.
You see redirects, pop-ups, disabled security tools, or unknown accounts
Disconnect from the network and seek professional incident response or reinstall Windows from trusted installation media.
It changed activation but no malware was found
The licensing changes still need to be reversed or replaced with a legitimate activation. A “no threats found” result does not certify that licensing modifications or credential exposure did not occur.

How to activate Windows safely
On current Windows 11 installations, open Start > Settings > System > Activation. Then choose:
- Change product key if you have a valid 25-character key.
- Go to Microsoft Store to purchase a digital license when appropriate.
- Troubleshoot for activation errors or after a qualifying hardware change.
Microsoft describes these options in its Windows activation help and explains genuine licensing at About genuine Windows. On a company or school computer, contact the organization’s support person instead of installing an activator. Volume-licensed organizations should obtain KMS instructions through their authorized IT administrator.

Can it interfere with Windows updates?
Do not assume every installation blocks every update. Malwarebytes warns that KMS tools can interfere with updates or leave users with unpatched software. Microsoft says critical security updates may still be available to non-genuine installations, while some updates and downloads are reserved for genuine Windows. The practical solution is to remove the activator and restore supported licensing rather than rely on an unofficial workaround.

Should you use another scanner?
Microsoft Defender is the appropriate first response. If the activator was executed, Malwarebytes can provide an optional second-opinion scan using the workflow described at its KMS remediation page. Buying security software does not prove that a machine is clean; persistent symptoms still warrant professional help or a reinstall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Defender warning for KMSAuto Net a false positive?
It can be a classification of a hacktool or PUA rather than proof of a conventional virus, but an unofficial KMSAuto download should still be quarantined. Assess the exact detection, source, signature, and behavior instead of disabling protection.
Can I allow KMSAuto Net if it is the only way to activate Office?
No. Do not whitelist it. Use a valid Microsoft license, Microsoft 365 subscription, or an organization’s authorized volume-licensing support.

Not necessarily. The tool may have changed licensing components, scheduled tasks, startup settings, or exclusions. Scan the system and use Microsoft’s supported activation and troubleshooting paths.
Do I need to reinstall Windows?
Not every detection requires a reinstall. Consider one when the program ran with administrator rights and tampering, persistence, credential exposure, or suspicious behavior cannot be confidently excluded.
The Bottom Line
KMSAuto Net is not an official Microsoft tool and should not be run or whitelisted. Its label may be PUA, riskware, hacktool, or malware depending on the sample, but every label warrants caution: quarantine it, scan for remnants and persistence, protect exposed accounts, and activate Windows through Microsoft or an authorized organization.
