WordPress.com is not obsolete in 2026. It is a managed WordPress service that now offers paid-plan plugin installation, broader theme and developer options, AI-assisted setup and a managed WooCommerce path. Its strongest use cases remain blogs, publications, newsletters, portfolios, nonprofits and content-led business sites. It is less compelling for a tiny brochure site that needs only a polished template, or for a commerce-first operation that wants Shopify’s tightly integrated workflow.
The important distinction is between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress. WordPress.com bundles hosting, SSL, security and much of the maintenance; WordPress.org generally means installing the open-source software with a host you choose. Treating them as the same product produces bad buying advice.
What changed about WordPress.com in 2026?
Older reviews often describe WordPress.com as a restricted blogging service where plugin installation required the expensive Business tier. That description is no longer current. WordPress.com’s current plan documentation and US pricing page advertise plugin installation on paid plans beginning with Personal, plus premium and uploaded themes on supported plans.
The service is also positioning itself as managed WordPress hosting: infrastructure, SSL, core updates, security protections, CDN/performance systems and support are provided according to plan. AI-assisted site creation and editing are being added rather than ignored, while the Commerce plan is built around managed WooCommerce.

Plugin access is not a guarantee that every plugin will work together. Compatibility, security, resource use, configuration and platform safeguards still matter. “Managed” also does not mean WordPress.com chooses your content, plugin stack, redirects, analytics, legal settings or store operations for you.
WordPress.com pricing and plan fit
The figures below are the displayed US pricing signals on WordPress.com’s pricing page. The $2.75 and $4 figures are equivalent monthly rates tied to particular prepayment terms, not universal monthly prices. Check checkout for your country, currency, tax, promotion and renewal rate.
| Plan | Advertised billing information | Best fit | Capabilities and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | No expiration stated | Testing, experimentation or a hobby blog | WordPress.com subdomain, 1 GB storage, unlimited pages and posts, basic recent stats; visitor ads and no plugin installation make it unsuitable for most professional brands. |
| Personal | Paid plans advertised from $2.75/month on three-year billing; from $4/month when billed annually | Personal or simple professional site needing a custom domain and no visitor ads | Paid-plan plugin access is now advertised. Advanced analytics, video, email marketing, backups, developer tooling and commerce may require higher tiers. |
| Premium | Exact rate varies by term, location and promotion; verify at checkout | Creators and bloggers wanting more design, audience and presentation tools | Premium themes, stronger analytics, payments or video features may be included according to the current plan comparison. |
| Business | Exact rate varies by term, location and promotion; verify at checkout | Organizations, agencies and sites needing serious customization | Plan materials describe real-time backups, one-click restores, SFTP/SSH, WP-CLI, GitHub deployments, stronger support and advanced plugin/theme work. |
| Commerce | Exact rate varies by term, location and promotion; verify at checkout | Managed WooCommerce stores | Commerce-oriented themes, international selling and store tooling; extensions, payment processing, tax, shipping and maintenance remain additional operational concerns. |
Annual and multi-year paid plans include a free custom domain for the first year under the stated conditions. Monthly billing is higher and does not receive the same free-domain treatment. Renewal pricing can differ from an introductory or equivalent monthly figure. Domain renewal, email, premium themes, paid plugins, WooCommerce extensions, payment processing and third-party services can materially change total cost.
What the free plan is really for
- Learning the block editor and testing whether WordPress suits you.
- Running a temporary project or hobby blog where a
wordpress.comaddress is acceptable. - Prototyping before buying a domain or paid features.
It is a poor choice for a business domain, a store, a monetized publication that needs plugins, or a brand that cannot tolerate WordPress.com advertising and service branding.

What WordPress.com does well
Publishing and editorial organization
Posts, pages, categories, tags, archives and block-based editing make WordPress.com particularly strong for blogs and publications. The large WordPress ecosystem supports SEO, newsletters, forms, memberships, analytics, multilingual content and social distribution. A content-heavy site can grow without changing platforms simply because it outgrew a brochure-site builder.
Managed infrastructure
WordPress.com explains its hosted model at choose a host: hosting, SSL, security measures, updates and performance infrastructure are handled as part of the service. That removes much of the server administration required by self-hosting, although you still manage content, configuration and the effects of your plugin choices.
Extensibility and a growth path
Paid plans expose tens of thousands of WordPress plugins, themes and integrations. That enables memberships, courses, bookings, advanced forms and unusual content models that tightly integrated builders may not support. The trade-off is that every added component can create update, security, performance and support work.
WooCommerce integration
Commerce is viable when publishing and selling need to coexist. The Commerce plan promotes unlimited products, international selling and marketing-oriented store features. WooCommerce remains more adaptable than many hosted carts for unusual products and content-led commerce, while managed hosting reduces infrastructure chores.

Where WordPress.com falls short
It has a real learning curve
Posts, pages, templates, patterns, styles, themes and plugins are distinct concepts. Navigation, site-wide styles, SEO, analytics, email delivery, redirects and structured data can require more decisions than Wix or Squarespace. The platform is operationally easier than an unmanaged server, but not necessarily the easiest visual builder.
Add-ons and renewal economics
The plan fee is only one line in a budget. Premium themes, plugins, email, domains, WooCommerce extensions, payment fees, developer time and future migrations all count. Compare the cost over the full billing term and renewal period rather than selecting the smallest advertised monthly equivalent.
Plugin complexity
More capability can mean more failure points. Use backups, compatibility checks and a staging or test process where available; remove unused plugins and update deliberately. A plan can advertise unlimited pages or visitors without promising unlimited storage, database workload, API use, video, email or WooCommerce processing.
Migration is possible, not magical
Posts, pages and media can be exported, but a move may require rebuilding theme design, menus, widgets or block patterns, plugin settings, forms, redirects, analytics, checkout and email delivery. Content portability is different from duplicating the entire running site with one click.

WordPress.com versus self-hosted WordPress
| Question | WordPress.com | Self-hosted WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included in the service | Purchased and administered separately |
| Maintenance | Core infrastructure, SSL and much security/updates work are managed | You or your host handle updates, backups, security and performance |
| Plugins and themes | Paid-plan access, subject to compatibility and platform safeguards | Broadest control over files, code and providers |
| Backups | Plan-dependent; real-time backups emphasized on higher tiers | Must be verified or configured separately |
| Support | WordPress.com support, stronger on paid tiers | Host, developer or community support |
| Technical control | Managed and therefore constrained | Maximum control, with maximum responsibility |
| Portability | Export and migration are possible, but design and settings may need reconstruction | Files and database are under your control from the start |
Choose WordPress.com when you want one purchase, support and less server administration. Choose self-hosting when you need server configuration, a particular host, specialized code or complete control over the stack. A cheaper hosting invoice does not automatically mean a cheaper site once maintenance, paid backups, security tools and technical labor are included.

Wix
Wix is a strong choice for beginners who prioritize visual simplicity and an integrated builder. WordPress.com offers a deeper publishing and plugin ecosystem. W3Techs’ July 2026 comparison measured Wix at about 4.3% of all websites and 6.1% of sites with a detectable CMS, versus WordPress overall at about 41.2% and 59.1%; those figures do not isolate WordPress.com. See Wix and the W3Techs comparison.
Squarespace
Squarespace suits a design-led portfolio, brochure site or small business that wants polished templates and fewer technical choices. WordPress.com is better for unusual content models and plugin-driven functionality. Vendor site: Squarespace.
Shopify
Shopify generally wins when product sales are the central purpose and you want a commerce-first dashboard. WordPress.com is more natural for content-heavy publishing combined with commerce. App, transaction and extension costs require an apples-to-apples calculation. Vendor site: Shopify.

Webflow
Webflow fits designers and agencies that need precise visual control for marketing sites. WordPress.com is usually friendlier to ordinary publishers and offers a broader plugin ecosystem. Vendor site: Webflow.
Ghost
Ghost is focused on writers, memberships and newsletters. It can be simpler when that is the entire product, but its extension ecosystem is smaller and it is less suited to varied business functionality. Vendor site: Ghost.
Managed hosts for self-hosted WordPress
Bluehost (bluehost.com/wordpress), Hostinger (hostinger.com/wordpress-hosting) and WP Engine (wpengine.com) represent different cost and support positions. The WordPress.org hosting directory is a starting point, not an independent endorsement; WordPress.org notes that some listed hosts may return part of their fees to the project.
Is it suitable for your type of site?
| Project | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Blog or publication | Strong yes | Mature editorial tools, archives, SEO and growth through plugins. |
| Personal site | Personal plan if you need a custom domain; Free for testing | Managed setup without server work. |
| Small business | Good when content, leads or integrations matter | Choose Wix or Squarespace if a simple visual brochure is the whole requirement. |
| Portfolio | Conditional | WordPress.com offers flexibility; Squarespace or Webflow may deliver a faster design-first result. |
| Nonprofit | Often good | Publishing, donations, forms and memberships can share one platform, subject to plugin and payment review. |
| Newsletter-first creator | Compare with Ghost | WordPress.com is broader; Ghost is more focused on memberships and subscriptions. |
| Online store | Commerce for content-led or unusual stores; Shopify for commerce-first simplicity | WooCommerce requires tax, shipping, payment, extension and fulfillment configuration. |
| Agency or freelancer | Business or self-hosted WordPress | Developer access and support matter; server-level control may favor self-hosting. |
| Membership or course site | Good with a verified plugin stack | Confirm compatibility, backups, privacy, payments and support before committing. |
Is WordPress.com past its prime?
WordPress remains the dominant CMS by a wide margin, but its overall measured share has declined in recent W3Techs data while Shopify, Wix and Squarespace remain significant competitors. The trend is evidence of category pressure, not proof that WordPress.com is losing users: W3Techs does not cleanly separate WordPress.com from self-hosted WordPress. See W3Techs’ history data.
The product direction points to adaptation rather than abandonment. Paid-plan plugins, managed infrastructure, AI-assisted creation and WooCommerce support address objections that older reviews often repeat. At the same time, the broad ecosystem creates choice, setup work and compatibility risk. AI can produce a draft faster, but it does not replace brand strategy, accessibility review, fact-checking, SEO architecture, privacy work or conversion testing. WordPress.org’s announcement of the browser-based, AI-assisted my.WordPress.net project shows ecosystem experimentation; it is not a WordPress.com feature and should not be treated as one.
Make the decision with a short pre-purchase checklist
- Define whether your priority is publishing, visual simplicity, selling, design control or server control.
- List the exact plugins, integrations, payment methods, analytics and email services you require; verify each one rather than assuming “tens of thousands” means universal compatibility.
- Calculate the first billing term and renewal cost, including domain, email, premium extensions, taxes and developer time.
- Decide what maintenance you still own: content, plugin updates, configuration, legal compliance, backups and troubleshooting.
- Test migration and export expectations before launch, especially for media, redirects, forms, memberships and checkout.
- For a store, test taxes, shipping, payments, refunds, inventory and fulfillment with real workflows before accepting orders.
Final recommendation
Choose WordPress.com if you want WordPress publishing power with hosting and infrastructure managed, and your site may grow into plugins, memberships, integrations or WooCommerce. Choose self-hosted WordPress if technical control and provider choice outweigh maintenance. Choose Wix or Squarespace for a small, design-led site where simplicity matters more than extensibility. Choose Shopify when selling products is the main job. Choose Ghost when memberships and newsletters are the entire business. WordPress.com is not past its prime; it is simply no longer the automatic answer for every kind of website.
