Upgrade to a flagship when it fixes a problem you actually have and the improvement is worth the amount you will pay after trade-in. If your current phone is secure, works well and meets your needs, keeping it, replacing its battery or buying a suitable refurbished model may be better value.
When does a flagship upgrade make sense?
Start with the limitation, not the new phone’s feature list. A flagship is easier to justify if your current phone has stopped receiving security updates, its battery no longer lasts through your day, or its camera or performance cannot handle something you regularly need. If you cannot name a meaningful problem the new model solves, the upgrade may be a want rather than a practical need.

Compare the benefit with the total amount you will pay, including any financing obligations. A monthly payment spreads the cost; it does not reduce it. Prices, offers, stock and trade-in terms depend on the model, seller and market, so check current local terms before committing.
Is your current phone still secure and in good condition?
Check software support for the exact model
Update periods vary by phone model, even within the same brand. Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates from their first U.S. Google Store availability; the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families listed on its page receive five years. Those periods are model-specific, and update delivery can depend on the device and carrier. Check Google’s Pixel update schedule for your exact phone rather than assuming the same support applies to every Android device.

If your phone no longer receives security updates, that is a concrete reason to consider replacing it, especially if you rely on it for banking, work or sensitive accounts. If updates continue and the phone otherwise serves you well, there may be no need to replace it yet.
Check battery condition before replacing the phone
A worn battery can shorten runtime and, in some cases, affect performance; it does not automatically mean the whole phone needs replacing. On an iPhone, check battery health and service information in Settings, then compare a service quote with the cost of a replacement phone. Apple’s guidance for iPhone battery and performance explains battery aging and service options.

Apple says iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions, while iPhone 15 and later are designed for 80% at 1,000 cycles under ideal conditions. These are design figures, not a promise about an individual phone’s condition. Other manufacturers may use different diagnostics and service terms; check the exact model’s support information.

Consider a refurbished phone
A refurbished model can be a middle ground when you need a replacement but do not need the newest flagship. Google describes refurbished Pixels sold in the U.S. as using genuine parts and including a one-year warranty; authorized programs and terms vary by region. Check the exact model, battery condition, warranty, return policy and seller before buying. See Google’s device circularity and longevity information for the programs it describes.
How should you calculate the real cost?
- Get a written trade-in estimate. Confirm which device and condition qualify, whether the estimate is conditional on inspection, and what could change the credit.
- Read the deadline and obligations. Check when the old phone must be submitted and whether the offer ties you to a carrier plan, retailer or financing agreement.
- Calculate the net price. Subtract only the trade-in credit you are reasonably likely to receive from the total price and include any required fees or continuing payments.
- Compare against repair and refurbished options. Use the same intended ownership period for each option, and include warranty or service costs where known.
Trade-in credit is not always guaranteed at the advertised amount. For example, Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy S26 announcement describes an eligible-device process with a submission window; late submissions or inspection findings can lead to a credit adjustment or chargeback. Read the current terms for the specific offer rather than treating a headline credit as cash already secured. See Samsung’s Galaxy S26 announcement and trade-in terms.

Do replacement-cycle averages mean you should upgrade?
No. They describe what people trade in or replace, not an ideal schedule for every owner. Assurant reported that devices turned in through its trade-in programs in 2025 averaged 3.80 years old for iPhones and 3.96 years for Android phones; Android devices averaged 4.1 years in Q4. Assurant also reported $6.4 billion in total value returned through its trade-in programs in 2025. These figures concern Assurant’s program activity, not all phones or a recommendation to upgrade at a particular age. See Assurant’s 2025 mobile trade-in and upgrade trends.
