Replace it when it cannot meet a real app, performance, video, or support need. If the home screen is the only problem, a third-party Home-button redirect may be an option on some Fire OS models—but it is not an Amazon-supported system launcher replacement, and it is not established for every device.
Choose based on the problem you want to solve
An upgrade and a launcher workaround address different things. Replacing the device can address app availability, video capability, or hardware responsiveness. A launcher redirect changes where the Home button takes you; it does not add processing power or app compatibility. If the only irritation is the home screen, buying a new Stick is not automatically necessary.

Find your model and operating system first
Fire TV Stick generations do not all use the same operating system, so “old Fire Stick” is not precise enough to establish support or launcher compatibility. Amazon’s Fire OS Overview lists the Fire TV Stick 2nd Generation (2016–2019, device code AFTT) on Fire OS 5 and the Fire TV Stick 3rd Generation (2020, AFTSSS) on Fire OS 7. Amazon notes that most Fire devices receive over-the-air updates and that rollout timing can vary.

- On the Stick, open Settings > Device > Fire TV > Software Version to check the software version.
- Match the model to Amazon’s device and OS documentation. Do not infer the OS from appearance alone.
- Use the model and OS when checking support dates or a third-party project’s compatibility instructions.
Check the support date for your region and model
Amazon does not give every Fire TV device one universal end-of-support date. Its UK security-update page says qualifying devices receive updates for at least four years after being bought new from Amazon as the seller on Amazon.co.uk, or until a later date listed for that model. On that UK page, Amazon lists the original Fire TV Stick 4K (1st Generation) through 31 December 2029. The Fire TV Stick 3rd Generation, Fire TV Stick Lite, Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Generation), and several newer models are listed through 31 December 2030. These dates are model-specific, not blanket dates for all Sticks.

Check Amazon’s UK software-security support list for the exact model. Those dates and purchase conditions apply to the UK page; readers elsewhere should check Amazon’s local support information rather than assume the same horizon.
Will an older Stick get the redesigned interface?
Do not assume it will. Amazon’s June 22, 2026 Fire TV interface announcement says the redesigned interface is available worldwide on current-generation Fire TV Stick devices; its update says current-generation sticks purchased globally now ship with it. That wording does not establish that every older Stick will receive the redesign. Check Amazon’s announcement and your device’s update status for model-specific expectations.

What changing the launcher means on Fire OS
“Replacing the launcher” can overstate what a workaround does. The third-party Home on Fire project describes redirecting the Home button to a selected launcher and, as of May 2026, claims compatibility with Fire OS 7 and Fire OS 8. That is the project maintainer’s compatibility claim—not an Amazon guarantee that the system launcher can be removed or replaced. A Home-button redirect is not necessarily the same as uninstalling Amazon’s launcher.

Only consider this route if the home screen itself is the problem and the exact device, OS, and firmware match the project’s current instructions. Setup may take troubleshooting, and behavior can change after software updates. Do not carry Android APK or launcher instructions over to a device running Vega OS: Amazon’s Fire TV device comparison identifies the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) as a Vega OS device, distinct from Fire OS models. The Fire OS 7/8 compatibility claim above does not cover it.

Availability of “Install unknown apps” has also varied in a reported incident: in September 2026, TechRadar reported that a settings update left the list incomplete or empty on some older devices; Amazon told the outlet it had identified a bug and planned an automatic fix. That report describes a time-specific issue, not a permanent end to sideloading on all older Fire OS devices. Check current device behavior before following setup steps.

Keep it if it still meets your needs
If your services work, the device feels responsive enough, and its model remains within the applicable support horizon, there is no evidence-based age threshold that says you must upgrade. Check for official software updates and identify the exact model before deciding it is unsupported.

Try a launcher workaround only for a home-screen complaint
If you have a Fire OS device whose exact firmware matches the project’s current instructions, a Home-button redirect is a technical third-party option. It may suit someone comfortable troubleshooting; it is not a reliable Amazon-supported replacement for the system launcher.
Replace it when it fails a concrete requirement
Replacement is reasonable if the Stick cannot run an app you need, is too slow for your household, lacks a video capability you require, or has reached its applicable support horizon. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Generation) is one current-model example to compare, not a recommendation that every owner needs a new Stick. Confirm the model, regional availability, and specifications in Amazon’s device comparison table before buying. The available sources do not establish that replacing any particular old Stick will make every user’s experience faster.
