It can be worth buying a LEGO set before it retires if you already want that specific set, the current total price works for you, and you would regret losing access to it. Retirement is a useful timing signal—not proof that a set will become a good investment. LEGO may stop carrying a set while other retailers still have stock, and a third-party retirement estimate or resale projection can be wrong.
What LEGO’s availability labels actually mean
LEGO.com’s US Last Chance to Buy page lists products LEGO describes as soon to be retired that are still offered for purchase. The page is market-specific, and both its listings and stock can change. Check the product page for your region before making a decision.

LEGO’s availability-status guide distinguishes three statuses that are easy to confuse:
- Retiring soon: LEGO says the set will be retired very soon. It is an official availability label, but it does not give you a guaranteed final purchase date.
- Retired Product: LEGO defines this as: “The set is no longer in our current assortment and we won’t be getting any more stock.” This means LEGO does not expect to restock it; it does not mean every retailer has sold out.
- Sold out: A temporary stockout is not the same as retirement. LEGO says a sold-out product might return, although the restock date is unconfirmed.
Check the exact set’s live status rather than treating a retailer’s “sold out” notice as confirmation that LEGO has retired it.

Are LEGO retirement dates official?
Third-party retirement lists are estimates, not LEGO announcements. BrickEconomy says it predicts retirement timing using factors such as sell-out cycles across LEGO retail markets, the lifespans of similar sets, and a machine-learning model; it says estimates are updated regularly. Its list can change, and a predicted date is not a promise that a set will disappear on that day. See BrickEconomy’s retirement tracker.
For a set you are considering, cross-check its set number on LEGO’s market-specific Last Chance to Buy page, its LEGO product listing, and more than one retailer. Availability varies by market, and a retailer’s inventory is not an official retirement confirmation. Note the date you checked: status and stock are time-sensitive.

A six-question checklist before you buy
- Would you want it if its resale price never rose? Building it, displaying it, giving it as a gift, or completing a collection are solid personal reasons to buy. If none applies, “retiring soon” alone is a weak reason.
- What is the total price today? Compare the live set price plus shipping with your budget and any available discounts. Do not pay a scarcity premium just because a third party estimates retirement is near.
- How strong is the retirement evidence? An official LEGO “Retiring soon” label is different from a predicted date on a third-party list. Record the set number and the date you checked so you can compare like with like.
- Could another set meet the same need? Check for a successor model, a similar design, or another set in the same theme. Whether a set has a likely replacement is one factor specialist market analysis considers, but it cannot establish what a particular buyer should choose. See BrickEconomy’s discussion of factors used to assess sets.
- What are you giving up by waiting? Other retailers may still have stock after LEGO stops carrying a set, and the set may later be available on the secondary market. Future availability, price, and condition are uncertain, so compare actual options rather than assuming retirement makes a set instantly rare.
- If you are buying as an investment, what has actually sold? Distinguish completed sale prices and your net proceeds from asking prices, estimated values, and projections. Account for selling fees, shipping, applicable taxes, storage, and how long your money will be tied up. The market examples below do not establish net realized returns for any particular buyer or set.
How to interpret resale values and projections
BrickEconomy’s June 9, 2026 article reports estimated current values and two-year projections for selected sets. The figures below are that publisher’s model snapshots, not guaranteed sale prices or universal returns.
| Set | Retail price in the article | Estimated current value | Estimated premium over retail | Two-year projection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eiffel Tower | $629.99 | $749.97 | 19.0% | $826.33 |
| Gringotts Wizarding Bank | $429.99 | $615.84 | 43.2% | $659.07 |
| Christmas Tree Decoration | $329.99 | $424.30 | 28.6% | $443.66 |
These are BrickEconomy’s estimates and projections as reported in its June 9, 2026 article. They do not show what every buyer can sell for after costs, and they do not prove that buying before retirement caused the estimated premiums. Its July 2026 guide discusses factors including theme demand, value and projection, set size, collector appeal, and replacement risk. Treat those as comparison points, not a reliable formula for picking a winning investment.

Making the decision between two sets
If you are choosing between candidates, compare them on the same date and in the same market. The first five questions help with a personal purchase; the final row matters if you are considering resale.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Personal interest and collection fit | Which set would you most want to build, display, gift, or own even if resale prices did not rise? |
| Current price and discounts | What is the actual total today, including shipping, and does it fit your budget? |
| Retirement evidence | Does LEGO label it “Retiring soon,” or is the timing only a third-party estimate? |
| Alternatives | Is there a successor or similar set that would satisfy the same interest? |
| Availability | What do LEGO and retailers in your region currently show for this exact set number? |
| Investment evidence | Are you using completed transactions and estimated net proceeds, or relying on asking prices and model outputs? |
If the set is a personal want at a price you accept, buying before retirement can make sense without any claim about future value. If the case depends on an expected price increase, treat that as uncertain and include the costs and time involved in selling.
