You can build a steadier readership on DEV.to by helping the right developers find useful work and giving them a reason to come back—not by chasing a viral post. Focus your writing, choose accurate tags, make the payoff clear, participate in relevant discussions and use post stats to decide what to write next. None of these steps guarantees a particular number of readers, but together they create a repeatable process.
1. Pick a subject readers can recognize
DEV says writers have the best chance of readership and meaningful discussion when they mostly write about software development and the tech industry. A recognizable subject helps intended readers see that a post is relevant to them and gives you room to build on earlier work.

Choose a topic you can return to, such as a language, tool, workflow or recurring engineering problem. Narrow it to a specific question for each post: for example, not just “JavaScript,” but a particular debugging problem or implementation decision. DEV’s guidance also encourages writers to bring relevant experience and perspective rather than publish a basic explainer that duplicates existing coverage. Read DEV’s writing guidance.
2. Use tags to signal fit, not chase popularity
DEV allows up to four tags on a post. Choose tags that accurately describe both the subject and the audience you want to reach. A popular tag that does not fit can put the post in front of the wrong readers; a relevant tag is a categorization and discovery aid, not a promise of reach.

- Before drafting, inspect the tag pages that serve your intended audience.
- Read each tag’s submission guidance and follow its rules.
- Select up to four accurate tags; do not add unrelated tags to broaden exposure.
DEV’s tag pages and help documentation explain how tags fit into publishing and discovery. The home page is tailored to member follows, and following tags and authors can affect what appears in a reader’s feed. Product behavior can change, so treat tags as a relevance signal rather than a distribution mechanism you control. See DEV’s help documentation.
3. Give the post a distinct reason to exist
Before writing, ask what a reader will get from this post that a generic explanation does not provide. DEV recommends adding context such as a real-world implementation, a specific use case, a decision and its trade-offs, an edge case, or a mistake and how it was corrected. Draw on work you actually did; do not imply testing or firsthand experience you do not have.

- A classroom classic: this 6-pack of 1-subject spiral notebooks helps you identify your subjects at a glance with color-coding efficiency; color assortment may vary
- The right ruling: these 8" x 10-1/2", college-ruled notebooks fit more writing per page than wide-ruled sheets; each notebook provides 70 double-sided sheets with red margin lines
- Perect perforation: Dependable micro-perforated sheets retain your must-have notes but still detach cleanly when you’re ready to revise
- Glide from page to page: Your favorite gel or ballpoint pens will move effortlessly across these smooth pages for A+ notes with minimal ink bleeding or show-through
- 3-Hold punched: Every notebook comes 3-hole punched to fit a standard binder; take along one notebook or several to save extra trips to the locker
A useful post might explain why you chose one approach over another, show where an implementation fails, or clarify a difficult concept with a fresh explanation. That specific contribution gives readers a reason to engage with this article and recognize your future work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Make the payoff clear early
Tell readers what they will be able to understand or do near the beginning. DEV’s writing guidance suggests stating one to three takeaways in the introduction and conclusion. If you have more than three major takeaways, consider splitting the material into multiple focused posts rather than making one article difficult to scan.
Rank #3
- Composition book contains 100 double-sided sheets; A classic favorite for journaling and lab notes
- Wide ruling gives you plenty of writing space for notetaking
- Sewn binding is smooth, helps keep pages securely in place and lays flat when open
- Inside covers feature a class schedule, multiplication tables, conversion tables and grammar rules
- Pages measure 7.5" x 9.75"; Black Marble Soft Cover
Keep the post easy to use: put the useful result near the top, organize the explanation around the reader’s question, and end by naming the key takeaways. A clear promise helps the right reader decide whether to continue; it does not require a sensational headline.
5. Turn connected posts into a series
When a subject supports several useful installments, a series can give readers a path from one post to the next. Each installment should still answer a meaningful question on its own; do not divide one short explanation into parts just to create more posts.
Rank #4

DEV lets authors create a series through the editor or the series front matter. The series label does not appear until a second entry exists, so publish at least two installments before expecting readers to see that label. See DEV’s series help.

On November 29, 2021, product manager Amy Lin described four high-level factors in DEV’s home-feed score: freshness; relevance, including whether a reader follows a post’s tags or author; popularity, measured by comments and reactions; and moderator feedback. The same update said DEV had found that reactions were receiving too much weight at the time. This is a historical product explanation, not a current ranking formula or a set of tactics that guarantees distribution. Use it only as context for why relevant relationships and substantive discussion matter. Read the 2021 feed update.
Keep participation respectful and useful. DEV’s Code of Conduct requires citing sources used to create content, following its AI guidelines, and avoiding plagiarism and harassment. Do not manufacture controversy, solicit empty reactions or flood unrelated tags. Read DEV’s Code of Conduct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Use post stats to choose what to do next
After publishing, review your post’s stats page for the signals DEV makes available. DEV’s 2023 changelog described engagement over time, external sites pointing to a post and a persistent list of users who reacted. These features can help you see when engagement occurred, where readers arrived from and who interacted; they do not establish that a particular tactic caused growth. Analytics details may have changed since that changelog. See DEV’s stats-page update.
- If a post drew discussion around a specific question, consider whether that question merits a focused follow-up.
- If an external site sent readers, assess whether sharing there makes sense for your next relevant post.
- If a post received little response, use that as one signal to review its audience fit, clarity and usefulness—not as proof that a topic cannot work.
8. Republishing? Decide which URL is canonical
If you are republishing an article from your own blog, decide which page should be treated as the canonical version before posting. DEV’s help describes RSS publishing options, and its editor supports the canonical_url field. Making the choice deliberately helps avoid leaving readers or search engines uncertain about the primary version. See DEV’s cross-posting help.
Quick Recap
A repeatable publishing routine
- Choose a recurring technical subject. Pick an area you can write about with useful specificity.
- Check audience fit. Inspect relevant tag pages and follow their submission rules.
- Define the contribution. Decide what experience, use case, decision, edge case or explanation makes the post worth reading.
- Draft around one to three takeaways. Put the result near the beginning and keep the article focused.
- Publish with accurate tags. Use no more than four and avoid mismatches.
- Take part in relevant discussion. Respond where you can add value, not just to prompt activity.
- Review stats and plan a follow-up. Use engagement over time and referral information as clues, not as proof of a growth formula.
