Is It Safe to Use AI for Prayer, Spiritual Reflection, or Religious Study?

AI may help locate or organize religious material, but it is not a spiritual authority. Verify sources, protect private information, and involve trusted people when a question is personal or consequential.

Sometimes, for limited tasks—but not as a spiritual authority. AI can help organize questions, locate material, or summarize a text. Its fluent answers may still contain errors or bias, and it cannot replace trusted sources, human care, or the discernment required for personal and consequential matters.

What can AI usefully help with?

Think of a chatbot as a fallible information assistant, not a spiritual guide. For example, you might ask it to help you find passages on a topic, outline questions for a study group, or summarize a text you provide. Use the result as a starting point: open the source itself, read the surrounding context, and decide what to do with help from people and authorities you trust.

A 2026 international modified Delphi study asked spiritual-care experts where AI might assist professional practice. Agreement was strongest for routine and information-oriented work—not for replacing human spiritual care.

Task in professional spiritual care Experts who agreed AI could assist or enhance it
Administrative and routine tasks 77 of 81 panelists (95.1%), Winiger et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026
Informational tasks 74 of 79 panelists (93.7%), Winiger et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026
Documentation 67 of 80 panelists (83.8%), Winiger et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026
Spiritual-care research 65 of 77 panelists (84.4%), Winiger et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026
Creating supportive spaces 30 of 69 panelists (43.5%), Winiger et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026
Direct patient engagement 32 of 76 panelists (42.1%), Winiger et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026
Ritual tasks 32 of 76 panelists (42.1%), Winiger et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026

The study invited 149 subject experts; 102 completed its first round and 83 its second. In that second round, 38 of 83 panelists (45.8%) judged AI’s benefits in spiritual care to outweigh its risks. These are experts’ judgments about professional spiritual care, not a clinical test of people using consumer chatbots for prayer, and not a safety rating for any particular product.

Why can a religious answer sound convincing and still be wrong?

Generative AI can produce false, biased, fabricated, or misattributed material in a confident tone. That matters when a response gives a scripture reference, quotation, citation, historical claim, or theological interpretation: a plausible-looking reference does not show that the source exists or supports the answer.

Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church guidance dated May 19, 2026, specifically recommends verifying generated facts, scripture references, quotations, citations, and theological claims. A 2025 FAccT paper examining Muslim users and Islamic material discusses risks including misquotation and bias in that domain. Its findings should not be treated as an error rate for all religions or all AI systems.

Check the source, not just the answer

  1. Ask the tool to identify the source for a claim or quotation, and to distinguish quotation from paraphrase.
  2. Open the cited primary text or a source recognized by your tradition. Check that the wording is there and read enough context to understand how it is being used.
  3. If the answer presents a disputed interpretation as settled, ask what different interpretations exist and which authorities support them. Verify those claims independently too.
  4. When the source cannot be found or checked, do not rely on the claim as a basis for belief or action.

Naming your tradition and asking the tool to make uncertainty or differences of interpretation explicit may help frame a query. It cannot guarantee an unbiased or accurate answer.

What should you keep private?

Do not enter confidential or identifying details into a public AI service unless you understand that specific service’s privacy protections and have a legitimate reason to use it. Virginia United Methodist guidance warns against entering pastoral confidences, congregational data, financial information, health information, or personally identifiable information into public AI tools. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints likewise cautions users to protect personal information. Provider practices and controls vary, so check the service’s current settings and terms rather than assuming a conversation is private.

A safer question leaves out names and identifying context. Instead of describing another person’s private pastoral or health situation, ask a general question about the relevant concept, or take the concern to an appropriate human adviser.

When should a person take the lead?

AI should not stand in for a relationship that depends on listening, trust, accountability, or care. The 2026 Delphi panel identified loss of human connection as its highest-ranked risk that reached consensus. Virginia United Methodist guidance says AI must not replace direct pastoral care, counseling, spiritual direction, sacramental ministry, or human presence.

Bring a trusted faith leader or other appropriate person into questions involving distress, crisis, difficult moral choices, or sacramental matters. Treat a chatbot’s claim that it speaks for God or conveys revelation with particular caution. Catholic norms assign discernment of alleged supernatural phenomena to church authorities and identify risks such as confusion, manipulation, and doctrinal error. That describes Catholic governance of those claims, not a universal rule shared by every religion.

How do religious traditions frame AI’s role?

There is no single religious ruling on AI that applies to every community. Use the authorities and sources recognized in your own tradition, and distinguish a particular institution’s guidance from a universal religious position.

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Its Principles for Church Use of Artificial Intelligence page, updated February 19, 2026, says: “AI does not replace divinely appointed sources, but, if used correctly, it can be a powerful tool for helping earnest seekers of truth search and access such sources.”
  • Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church: Its AI Task Force guidance emphasizes verification, protection of sensitive information, and preserving human pastoral care.
  • Catholic Church: Catholic norms put discernment of alleged supernatural phenomena with church authorities; this is relevant when a system claims revelation, not a general assessment of every religious use of AI.

These examples illustrate different institutional guidance. They do not establish one position for all members of a tradition, nor do they certify a chatbot as appropriate for private spiritual advice.

What does the broader evidence establish—and what does it not?

The Delphi study concerns expert views about professional spiritual care, capabilities, risks, and competencies. It does not establish a universal safety threshold for people praying or studying with chatbots. Other publications address narrower questions:

  • A 2025 FAccT paper focuses on user preferences and expert assessments involving AI-generated Islamic content; it should be read within that scope.
  • A Microsoft Research report by Nina Lutz and E. Glen Weyl describes an 11-faith-leader workshop, involving leaders from Abrahamic traditions, who red-teamed ChatGPT-5, alongside a computational audit. The 11 participants are a workshop count, not a measure of how often harms occur or how effective the system is.
  • A 2026 Springer paper proposes a theoretical religious-education chatbot design that includes privacy and human escalation. It does not report a deployed, validated system.
  • A 2025 Nature correspondence raises manipulation, spiritual abuse, and dependence as risks. Those are concerns identified by its authors, not quantified outcomes or proof of a particular rate of harm.

Taken together, these sources support caution and human oversight, not a blanket finding that all religious uses of AI are safe or unsafe. They do not certify any current consumer product for prayer, reflection, or religious study.

How can you evaluate an AI tool before using it?

Compare the service and the task, rather than relying on a general claim that an AI product is “good for faith.” Consider these questions:

  • Can you trace its sources? Can you check quotations and references against primary texts or sources your tradition recognizes?
  • Does it fit your tradition? Does it make clear whose interpretations it is presenting, and can it acknowledge disagreement?
  • What happens to your data? Check the service’s current privacy, retention, and training controls before sharing anything sensitive.
  • Does it overstate its authority? Be wary of a system presenting itself as a spiritual authority or speaking on behalf of God.
  • Is human support available? A tool should not be your only resource when a matter calls for pastoral care or other human help.
  • Could language or bias affect the answer? Consider whether the tool handles your language and tradition’s sources well, and verify its claims rather than assuming coverage is reliable.

No cited source establishes that one available product performs best across these criteria.
