Is It Safe to Turn Off Microsoft Defender SmartScreen?

For most users, leaving SmartScreen on is the safer choice. Find out how its Windows and Edge controls differ and how to investigate a blocked file.

For most people, it is safer to leave Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on. It checks the reputation of websites and apps or downloads, adding a layer of protection against known unsafe content. If SmartScreen warns about a file, verify the file and its source before deciding what to do; turning off protection broadly is not the first step.

What SmartScreen does—and what turning it off changes

Microsoft describes SmartScreen as reputation-based protection for URLs and apps or downloads. It can warn or block when a site or file is known or suspected to be unsafe. The warnings are signals to investigate, not proof by themselves that a file is malicious—or that it is safe.

There is no single SmartScreen switch that necessarily controls every check. Windows has app and file reputation settings, while Microsoft Edge has a separate SmartScreen setting for websites and downloads. Microsoft documents these controls separately, so changing one may not change the other. The available labels and paths can vary with Windows version, edition, browser, and organization policy.

SmartScreen is not Microsoft Defender Antivirus

SmartScreen’s reputation checks and Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time protection are distinct controls. Turning off SmartScreen removes the corresponding reputation checks where they were enabled; it does not mean antivirus protection has also been turned off, and antivirus protection does not make SmartScreen redundant. Windows Security documents antivirus real-time protection separately.

An app or file in Windows Windows app and file reputation checks Windows settings and policy govern these checks separately from Edge. Microsoft’s Available Microsoft Defender SmartScreen settings describes the policy controls.

What to do when SmartScreen blocks or warns about a file

  1. Identify the warning. Determine whether it came from a website, an Edge download, or a Windows app or file check; the corresponding setting and next steps differ.
  2. Verify the source and file. Confirm that you got the download from the developer’s genuine official site. Check that the publisher and file are what you expected. If you cannot establish that, do not bypass the warning.
  3. Review Protection History. Open the Windows Security app and select Protection history to inspect recorded events. Microsoft says SmartScreen blocks for potentially unwanted apps can appear there; its guidance is at Protection History in the Windows Security App.
  4. Allow only a file you have verified. If you conclude that a recorded block was mistaken, Microsoft documents allowing the item in Protection History and downloading it again. This is a narrower choice than disabling SmartScreen for other sites or files.

For general context on Windows reputation-based protection, see Microsoft Support’s Protect your PC from potentially unwanted applications.

Should an organization turn SmartScreen off?

Microsoft recommends enabling SmartScreen in organizational deployments and configuring protections to prevent users from bypassing high-risk warnings. Its policy guidance notes: “By default, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen allows users to bypass warnings, which allows users to continue to an unsafe site or run an unsafe file, even after being warned.” Organizations can also use policy to prevent users from changing settings. On a managed computer, follow your organization’s instructions; a missing or reverting setting may be intentional.
