How to Allow an App or File Blocked by SmartScreen in Windows

SmartScreen-related blocks do not share one allow button. Identify whether the warning is from File Explorer, Windows Security, Edge, or Windows 11 Smart App Control, then use the appropriate review path only for a verified file.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single “allow” switch for every SmartScreen warning. First identify where the block appears: File Explorer’s Unblock checkbox is for a file-origin warning; Windows Security’s Protection history is where you review some blocked apps; Microsoft Edge has its own download report option. Smart App Control is a separate Windows 11 feature with no documented per-app bypass.

Before changing anything, verify the publisher and download source, check that the file is the type you expected, and scan it with Microsoft Defender Antivirus or your antivirus software. If you cannot establish that the file is trustworthy, do not allow it.

Identify which protection blocked the app or file

Use the warning’s location and wording to choose the matching path. These Microsoft support instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11 where applicable; Smart App Control is a Windows 11 feature. Interface labels can vary with updates, and an organization may manage some settings.

Where you see the warning What it indicates Can you allow that item? Does it require downloading again?
File Explorer file Properties, with “This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.” Windows Attachment Manager marked the file as coming from another computer. Yes, with Unblock in Properties, if the file is trusted. Microsoft’s Attachment Manager guidance. No re-download is specified for this route.
Windows Security > Protection history A Windows Security event; Microsoft says a SmartScreen-blocked potentially unwanted app appears here. For a block you believe is a mistake, inspect the event and choose Actions > Allow. Microsoft’s Protection history guidance. Yes. Microsoft says the blocked file has already been removed, so download it again.
Microsoft Edge download alert Edge SmartScreen flagged a known malicious item or a download not well known to Edge users. For a file you independently verified, use the alert’s menu and choose Report this file as safe. Microsoft’s Edge SmartScreen FAQ. Not stated in Microsoft’s report guidance.
Smart App Control notification Windows 11 Smart App Control blocked an app; this is distinct from SmartScreen. No individual-app bypass is documented. Microsoft lists turning Smart App Control off or asking the developer to sign the app with a valid signature. Microsoft’s Smart App Control FAQ. Not stated.

Unblock a trusted file in File Explorer

Use this only when the file’s Properties page shows the file-origin security message. It does not override every SmartScreen, antivirus, or app-control block.

  1. Verify the download came from the publisher or source you intended to use. Check the expected filename and file type, then scan it with Microsoft Defender Antivirus or your antivirus software.
  2. In File Explorer, find the file, right-click it, and select Properties.
  3. On the General tab, look near the bottom for the security message: “This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.”
  4. If the file is trusted and the option appears, select Unblock, then select Apply > OK.

Microsoft’s instruction is direct: “Only unblock files from trusted sources.” If Unblock is missing, this file-origin procedure is not available for the item; return to the warning location and identify the control responsible rather than changing registry or policy settings.

Review a blocked app in Windows Security

Microsoft says a SmartScreen-blocked potentially unwanted app can appear in Protection history. This is a review path for the listed event, not a reason to dismiss an unfamiliar or malware warning.

  3. If you have verified the app and believe the block is mistaken, choose Actions > Allow.
  4. Download the app again. Microsoft says the blocked file has already been removed.

If you later change your mind, Microsoft says an allow decision can be removed from the Allowed threats page. See Microsoft’s Protection history instructions.

Respond to a Microsoft Edge download warning

Edge SmartScreen checks downloads for known malicious items and can also warn about a file that is not well known to Edge users. A warning based on limited familiarity is not proof that a file is malicious, but it is not evidence that the file is safe either.

Rank #3

If you have independently confirmed the publisher and file, Microsoft says to open the three-dot menu beside the download alert and choose Report this file as safe. Otherwise, cancel the download. Do not turn off protection just to get past a warning. A work or school administrator may control Edge SmartScreen settings, so the option may not be available to you. Understand Smart App Control blocks in Windows 11

Smart App Control is separate from SmartScreen. Microsoft’s current FAQ does not document an “Allow anyway” control for a single blocked app. It lists turning Smart App Control off or contacting the developer and asking them to sign the app with a valid signature; Microsoft presents contacting the developer as the preferable option.

If the expected option is missing or the block remains

  • Check the warning source: Properties > General > Unblock, Windows Security > Protection history, an Edge download alert, and a Smart App Control notification are different controls.
  • Update and retry carefully: Microsoft recommends ensuring Windows and apps are up to date and redownloading a file that may be corrupted. Verify the source before trying the replacement download.
  • Check for organization policy: On a work or school device, ask your administrator if a setting or download policy is managed. Microsoft notes that an administrator may manage Edge SmartScreen settings.
  • Do not start with advanced policy changes: Microsoft cautions that Group Policy, Defender, SmartScreen, attachment-policy, or registry changes can affect how internet files are handled and should be limited to advanced users or IT administrators. Incorrect security-policy or registry changes can cause system problems.

Microsoft warns that “Turning off SmartScreen can make your device more vulnerable to malicious files and websites.” Keep protection enabled unless you understand the specific change and its consequences.
