What an OBS profile backup contains—and what is not confirmed
OBS Project’s Profiles documentation, dated January 14, 2022, says a profile can be exported to a JSON file for backup or use in another OBS installation. It lists Stream settings, including the connected account, as profile settings. It also distinguishes profiles from Scene Collections: profiles do not store scenes.

That documentation does not specifically establish whether every exported profile JSON contains a readable stream key, or whether OBS encrypts, masks, or strips the key during export. Behavior may vary with OBS version and settings, so a general statement that every export includes the key—or that none does—would go beyond what the documentation confirms.
Why a copy of the key deserves protection
YouTube’s live stream settings help page says stream keys are “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube’s live streaming setup instructions explain that you copy the key from YouTube and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key setting so YouTube can accept the feed.

If an exported file contains a usable key, someone who gets that copy may be able to use the credential to send a feed. The official documentation cited here does not establish that every export contains a key, so treat this as a conditional risk: protect the backup if the key might be present.
How to handle an OBS profile backup
- Inspect the actual export when you need to know what it contains. Export the profile and examine that particular JSON file. Do not infer that a key is absent or protected simply because the file is an OBS profile backup.
- Limit access to the file. Avoid posting it publicly, attaching it to an open support request, or putting it in a broadly accessible or unprotected cloud folder. Use encrypted storage and transfer where available. The cited OBS Profiles page does not document encryption built into profile export.
- If you want a key-free backup, verify your workflow. Use a method you have confirmed omits the credential, then plan to enter the key again when restoring OBS. The cited documentation does not establish a guaranteed OBS export option that excludes the key.
- Protect every copy. An encrypted USB drive can be one place to keep a sensitive backup, but encryption on that drive does not protect copies left in other locations. Check cloud folders, email attachments, and shared support files too.
If the backup may have been exposed
Reset the stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the newly generated key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can perform the reset. Follow YouTube’s current controls for the channel and confirm OBS is using the replacement key before starting the stream.

Do not confuse the key with public stream details
The stream key is the credential-like value YouTube tells the encoder to use. It is not the same thing as a public stream URL or an OBS profile name. Keep the key private even if other stream details are intended to be shared.
