Usually, no: avoid running an unvalidated, generic minifier over Go source code in a production build. Go comments can control file selection and compiler behavior, so a rewrite that alters or relocates them may change the program that gets built. If you mean reducing the executable’s size, use Go’s linker options instead—and test the exact release build.
First, distinguish source minification from binary size reduction
Source minification rewrites .go files before compilation, typically by changing whitespace, comments, or other source text. Linker flags such as -w and -s act later, when Go builds the executable, and remove debugging metadata. They are not source minifiers.

The Go FAQ says a program compiled with gc can be linked with -ldflags=-w to disable DWARF generation and remove debugging information “with no other loss of functionality.” It also says this can reduce binary size substantially, but gives no percentage. The linker reference specifies that -w omits the DWARF symbol table and that -s omits the symbol table and debug information, implying -w. The FAQ’s guidance is at Debugging with GDB.

Go comments are not always disposable. The compiler documentation states, “The compiler accepts directives in the form of comments.” Separately, the Go command documentation on build constraints describes build constraints and build tags, which determine whether particular files are included in a build.

A minifier that removes, changes, or moves specially formatted comments could therefore affect file selection or compiler behavior. That is a reason to validate the particular transformation—not proof that every whitespace-only rewrite is unsafe. The official documentation does not certify arbitrary third-party minifiers across Go projects.
Choose the option that matches your goal

Validate the exact production build
Before shipping any source transformation or linker flags, test the artifact produced by the same release pipeline you intend to deploy. Include the project’s actual Go version, build tags, generated code, target platforms, and relevant build steps; test execution alone will not establish that every release configuration is covered.

- Build a baseline: produce the ordinary release artifact from unchanged source using the project’s normal configuration.
- Apply one change at a time: test the specific minifier transformation, or build separately with the intended linker flags or
-trimpath. - Compare and exercise the artifacts: record binary size, run the project’s tests and release checks, and verify the behavior needed on each target platform.
- Preserve what diagnosis requires: if stripping debug metadata, keep a corresponding unstripped build or other useful debug artifacts where your operational process needs them.
Do not treat minification as source protection
If the aim is to prevent people from inspecting compiled software, source minification or removing debug metadata should not be presented as a reliable guarantee. The cited Go documentation explains what these build options do, but does not establish that either makes a compiled program impossible to inspect.
