You can power a streaming stick from a TV’s USB port if the exact model supports it and the port supplies enough power. Start with the stick maker’s setup instructions and included cable. If the stick shows a low-power warning or behaves erratically, use the manufacturer-recommended wall adapter instead. The TV’s USB port may also turn off with the television or in standby, so the stick may need to restart when you watch again.
Check whether your streaming stick supports TV USB power
USB power support varies by device, so check the setup instructions for your exact model rather than assuming every streaming stick can use a TV port. Roku says all Roku Streaming Sticks support USB power, although some TV ports cannot provide enough power. Amazon’s setup pages also describe TV USB-A Direct Power for the Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation) and Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation). Those instructions are model-specific.

Use the supplied cable
Connect the stick to an HDMI port, then connect its power cable as directed in the setup guide. For the two Fire TV models above, Amazon describes the included 1.3-foot USB-C cable: its USB-A end can connect to the TV for direct power. If the TV port is too far away or the stick reports insufficient power, Amazon suggests using a 5V, 1A wall adapter.

How to connect the stick and choose a power source
- Plug the streaming stick into the TV’s HDMI port. If it crowds a neighboring port, an HDMI extender can help with clearance; it does not increase USB power.
- Connect the manufacturer-supplied power cable to the stick and the TV’s USB port, following the exact model’s setup instructions. On supported Fire TV models, that means connecting the included cable’s USB-A end to the TV.
- Turn on the TV and check for a low-power or insufficient-power warning. Also watch for crashes, unexpected behavior, or repeated restarts.
- If the stick indicates that power is inadequate, try another TV USB port if one is available. For Fire TV, Amazon also recommends trying a USB 3.0 port if the TV has one.
- If the warning or erratic behavior continues, connect the stick to a compatible wall adapter that meets the device maker’s recommendation. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
Recognize signs of inadequate power
Fire TV
Amazon identifies an “insufficient USB power” notification as a sign that the TV port is not providing enough power. Its troubleshooting steps are to try another TV USB port, use a USB 3.0 port if available, or connect the stick to a 5W adapter rated at 5V, 1A or equivalent. This rating is Amazon’s recommendation for Fire TV low-power troubleshooting, not a universal specification for every streaming stick. See Amazon’s Fire TV low-power troubleshooting instructions.
Roku
Roku lists a flashing red light or an on-screen low-power message as indications of inadequate power; crashes or unusual behavior can also occur. Its support guidance suggests restarting the player, returning to the supplied cable, trying another TV USB port, and switching to wall power if needed. Roku specifies a 5V, 1A adapter or equivalent when an adapter is required. See Roku’s low-power troubleshooting guidance.

A solid red light is a different condition: Roku associates it with overheating. Unplug the player and let it cool rather than treating the light as a low-power warning.

Use TV USB when the model supports it and the stick works normally. Choose wall power if the TV port produces a warning, causes instability, or switches off when you want the stick to remain powered.

Why the stick may restart when the TV turns on
A USB port’s power behavior can depend on the television. Roku explains that USB-powered players lose power when the TV turns off, and that many televisions also cut power in standby. When power returns, the player starts up again. Roku’s restart guidance describes this behavior; using a wall adapter avoids that particular TV-USB power cycle.

Keep the setup safe and reliable
- Use the supplied cable unless the device maker confirms a replacement is suitable. A generic cable may not provide the required connection or features.
- Avoid long, low-quality USB extensions. Roku warns that voltage can drop over distance.
- Stop using a cable or adapter that appears damaged. Amazon’s safety guidance also says to discontinue use of damaged power accessories and use its recommended adapter for the Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation). See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick HD safety guidance.
- Check the exact device’s instructions before buying an adapter. The 5V, 1A or equivalent advice above is specific to the cited manufacturer guidance and should not be applied automatically to other models.
