Read-only access for summarizing messages is less risky than permission to send, forward, or delete mail. Even a reading agent can encounter malicious instructions embedded in an email, so narrow permissions and human review matter more than a promise that the AI will ignore suspicious text.
What can go wrong when an agent reads email?
Email is not just information for an AI agent; it can also be an input that tries to influence what the agent does. NIST describes agent hijacking as an attack in which malicious instructions are hidden in material an agent consumes, including an email, file, or website. A message may therefore try to redirect an agent away from the task you assigned.

This does not establish how likely an attack is for any particular email service or agent. The cited guidance provides no general consumer risk rate, so a precise percentage would be misleading.
Which email permissions are reasonable?
Match access to the job. For summarizing messages, read-only access may be sufficient; sending, forwarding, and deleting usually require a separate, explicit reason. OWASP’s 2025 email-assistant example recommends a read-only OAuth scope for summarization and having the user review and send drafts. NIST defines least privilege as restricting a user or process to the minimum access needed for its assigned task.

| Configuration | What it permits | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only access | Read messages, subject to the connector’s actual scope | Consider for summarization or search when the task needs mailbox content. |
| Read/write access | May permit actions such as sending, forwarding, or deleting, depending on the integration | Use only when the task genuinely requires those actions and safeguards are in place. |
These are general categories, not a description of every Gmail, Outlook, or third-party connector. Check the exact OAuth permissions and enabled actions before connecting an account.
How to connect an email agent more safely
- Define the task. Decide whether the agent needs to summarize, search, draft, or carry out an action. Do not grant action permissions just in case.
- Choose the narrowest access available. Prefer read-only access for reading and summarizing, and limit the mailbox or messages available if the integration offers that control.
- Keep consequential actions under your control. Require your review and approval before sending, forwarding, deleting, or taking another externally visible or high-impact action. OWASP recommends human approval for high-impact actions and authorization checks in downstream systems.
- Check data handling before granting access. Find out where the service processes and stores email content, who can access it, how long it is retained, and whether it may be used for training. These terms vary by provider; general security guidance does not establish the policy of a particular agent.
- Check oversight and recovery. Confirm that you can revoke access and inspect activity logs, and learn how to report suspicious behavior. CISA’s May 1, 2026 announcement of joint guidance emphasizes identity management, oversight, and monitoring.
- Recheck after changes. Reassess access and safeguards when the agent, connector, or workflow changes. OWASP recommends structured security testing before deployment and after material changes.
Why prompt-injection defenses are not enough
Filtering suspicious text can help, but it should not be the only safeguard. OWASP advises checking proposed actions against the user’s original intent and using defense in depth: least-privilege permissions, authorization controls, and human approval for consequential actions. A filter cannot make broad access safe by itself.

Questions to ask about a specific agent
- Is access read-only, or can the agent send, forward, or delete messages?
- Can access be restricted to selected messages or a smaller mailbox scope?
- Does the agent need your approval for actions, and where is that approval enforced?
- Can you revoke access and review an activity log?
- What does the provider say about processing, storage, retention, access by staff, and model training?
The answers depend on the particular service and connector. Verify them in the permission screen and the provider’s current documentation or policy rather than relying on the generic label “AI agent.”
