For many healthy adults with a healthy, well-cared-for dog, sharing a bed is a personal choice—not automatically unhealthy. The risk of catching an infection from sleeping with a pet is generally low, but not zero. Your dog’s health and behavior, your own vulnerability to infection, and whether you sleep well together all matter.
Can sleeping with your dog make you sick?
It is possible, but the risk is generally low. A CDC review describes infections acquired by sleeping with a pet as uncommon, while documenting rare cases. As CDC notes, animals can carry germs even when they appear healthy; transmission can happen through contact with the animal, its waste, or contaminated items in its environment.

The CDC’s 2011 review, “Zoonoses in the Bedroom”, discusses case reports and studies involving close contact, bites, parasites, and other routes. These examples show that transmission can occur; they do not establish a current population-wide risk estimate for an ordinary household dog.

The review reported an association in that specific study. Its small sample and outbreak setting mean the figures should not be treated as a general estimate of the risk from bed-sharing.

What matters when deciding whether to share a bed
Your health
Some people are more likely to become seriously ill from infections that spread between animals and people. CDC identifies children under 5, adults 65 and older, people with weakened immune systems, and often pregnant people as higher-risk groups. The CDC guidance does not set one universal bed-sharing rule for everyone in these groups. If one of these circumstances applies in your household, discuss your situation with a healthcare professional and your veterinarian.
Your dog’s health and parasite prevention
Dogs can carry fleas, ticks, and other parasites. Ticks and fleas can spread diseases to pets and people, so ask your veterinarian which preventive measures fit your dog’s health and the risks where you live. Your dog’s behavior around sleep
Do not startle or disturb a dog while it is sleeping. CDC includes this in its dog-safety guidance as a way to reduce bite risk. It is a precaution around sleeping dogs, not evidence that bed-sharing itself makes a dog aggressive. Review the CDC’s dog-safety guidance.

Sleep quality is a separate issue from infection risk. Sufficient, good-quality sleep is important to health, but the CDC sources cited here do not establish how much a dog in bed affects a person’s sleep. Pay attention to your own experience: if the arrangement regularly disrupts your sleep, try a different sleeping setup. How to reduce practical risks
- Keep up with routine veterinary care and vaccinations, and ask your veterinarian about flea, tick, heartworm, and other parasite prevention appropriate for your dog and area.
- Keep your dog’s sleeping area and bedding clean. CDC recommends clean bedding for pets.
- Clean up urine, feces, or vomit promptly, and wash your hands after handling your dog, its waste, or pet-care supplies.
- Avoid disturbing your dog while it is sleeping.
If you prefer not to share a bed, a clean, washable dog bed is one practical option. A separate bed may make the sleeping arrangement easier to manage, but the CDC guidance does not establish it as a proven way to prevent infection.

Consider four things together: whether anyone in the household is more vulnerable to serious infection, whether your dog’s veterinary care and parasite prevention are current, how the dog responds to being approached or moved while sleeping, and whether you sleep well with the dog in the bed. There is no clinical score or threshold in the cited guidance that determines the right choice for every household.

In a CDC podcast accompanying its review, public health veterinarian Heather Bair-Brake said, “In this country, the risk of acquiring a disease from sleeping with your pet is generally low.” That statement is about the United States and describes a generally low—not nonexistent—risk.
