Choose the MSI Crosshair A16 HX if you want its listed 16-inch, 2560 × 1600, 240 Hz display; choose the Katana 15 HX if you prefer a 15.6-inch laptop with a choice of FHD 144 Hz or QHD 165 Hz configurations. The right buy depends on the exact model: GPU memory, processor, storage layout and even the Crosshair’s power specification vary by family revision. MSI’s specifications do not establish which laptop is faster in games, quieter, or better value at current prices.

At a glance: what separates the two

Buying factor MSI Katana 15 HX C14W MSI Crosshair A16 HX
Display 15.6-inch FHD (1920 × 1080) at 144 Hz or QHD (2560 × 1440) at 165 Hz; options vary by configuration. MSI specifications E8W and D8W specification pages list a 16-inch QHD+ (2560 × 1600) 240 Hz display. E8W specifications; D8W specifications
Graphics Listed RTX 5050, RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 Laptop GPU options, each with 8 GB GDDR7. E8W lists RTX 5060 8 GB and RTX 5070 variants with either 8 GB or 12 GB. D8W lists RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 options with 8 GB.
Processor Intel Core HX options; MSI’s overview names up to Core i9-14900HX. E8W uses AMD Ryzen 9 8000 HX-series processors; MSI’s overview names Ryzen 9 8940HX.
Memory and storage Memory varies by model; the C14W page lists up to 96 GB on DDR5 configurations. Two M.2 PCIe Gen4 slots are listed. MSI advises consulting a service center about SSD upgrades. E8W lists up to 96 GB DDR5-5200, with one M.2 Gen4 and one Gen5-compatible slot. D8W lists up to 96 GB DDR5-5200 and two M.2 slots.
Maximum combined CPU-GPU power listed Up to 170 W under the stated configuration and operating conditions. E8W: up to 190 W. D8W: up to 170 W.
Current price and measured results Not established by the cited official specifications. Check live prices and independent tests for the exact configurations you are considering.

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not results from a head-to-head test. In particular, do not treat a higher combined-power figure as proof of higher frame rates: the cited figures apply to different revisions and do not show performance under matched conditions. MSI’s overview pages describe the Katana C14W and Crosshair E8W families; a family overview does not guarantee that every retail unit has its headline components.

Which display is the better fit?

Choose Crosshair for a larger, higher-refresh panel

The Crosshair A16 HX E8W and D8W specification pages list a 16-inch QHD+ panel at 240 Hz. That offers more screen area and a higher listed refresh rate than either Katana option. A high refresh rate is most useful when a game can deliver frame rates that make use of it; the specification alone does not show how well a particular configuration will run your games at the panel’s native resolution.

Choose Katana if you want a smaller screen or more panel choice

The Katana C14W is listed with a 15.6-inch FHD 144 Hz option or a QHD 165 Hz option. Check the exact SKU before buying: the family name does not tell you which panel is installed. MSI describes its optional QHD panel as offering “stunning visual clarity” and fluid motion, but that is product-page language, not an independent comparison. MSI Katana 15 HX C14W overview

  • Cooler Boost 5 shared-pipe thermals: Dual fans, multi-heat-pipe Cooler Boost 5 and a shared-pipe design help keep CPU and GPU temps in check so frame rates stay stable during long sessions.

Compare the exact GPU and VRAM—not just “RTX 5070”

Both families list RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 Laptop GPU options, but the configuration details differ. The Katana C14W page lists RTX 5050, RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 options with 8 GB GDDR7. The Crosshair E8W page lists RTX 5070 variants with either 8 GB or 12 GB, while its D8W page lists RTX 5070 options with 8 GB. E8W also lists RTX 5060 with 8 GB.

That makes the complete model number and listing important: two laptops described as a “Crosshair A16 HX RTX 5070” may not have the same VRAM. Compare the precise GPU, VRAM, display resolution and price together. These official pages do not provide matched gaming benchmarks, so they cannot establish a performance winner between the families or among those configurations.

Intel Katana or AMD Crosshair?

The cited Katana C14W overview names an Intel Core i9-14900HX option. The Crosshair A16 HX E8W uses AMD Ryzen 9 8000 HX-series processors, and MSI’s E8W overview names the Ryzen 9 8940HX. Both are family-level descriptions: check the processor in the exact unit listing rather than assuming every configuration has the top named chip.

The available specifications do not provide directly comparable gaming benchmarks for these processors in these laptops. The CPU names alone are therefore not enough to say which will deliver better game performance. Look for independent tests of the exact or closely matched configurations if performance is your deciding factor.

Memory, SSD slots and upgrade checks

Memory capacity depends on the model

The cited pages list configurations up to 96 GB for both families, but the Katana page notes that memory varies across models, including different memory configurations. Crosshair E8W and D8W list DDR5-5200. Confirm the RAM installed in the particular unit, whether it can be upgraded, and any service requirements before buying.

Storage layouts are not identical

The Katana C14W page lists two M.2 PCIe Gen4 slots. MSI advises consulting a service center for Katana SSD upgrades, so verify the service guidance for the exact model before planning a drive installation. Crosshair E8W lists one M.2 Gen4 slot and one Gen5-compatible slot; D8W lists two M.2 slots. Check the relevant revision’s specification page and the retailer’s exact SKU rather than assuming every A16 HX has the same slot generations.

How to choose between the listings

  1. Match the screen to your preference. Select a Crosshair E8W or D8W listing for the specified 16-inch QHD+ 240 Hz panel, or a Katana configuration whose listing confirms the FHD 144 Hz or QHD 165 Hz panel you want.
  2. Verify GPU and VRAM. Read the full configuration details, especially for Crosshair E8W RTX 5070 models, which MSI lists with either 8 GB or 12 GB.
  3. Check the processor and installed memory. Compare the actual CPU and RAM in each listing; family overviews and maximum-capacity figures do not describe every unit.
  4. Confirm storage and upgrade terms. Check slot generation and MSI’s service guidance for the precise model before buying an SSD or planning an upgrade.
  5. Compare current prices for equivalent configurations. Match GPU, VRAM, screen, RAM and storage before judging value. No current-price comparison is established here.
  6. Use independent testing to settle performance questions. Look for reviews that test comparable configurations under the same conditions before choosing on frame rate, battery life, noise or temperatures.

What the specifications cannot tell you

The manufacturer pages establish listed options and power claims, but they do not settle which laptop is faster in games, runs cooler or quieter, lasts longer on battery, or offers better value today. The Katana’s up-to-170 W figure is tied to stated configuration and operating conditions; Crosshair E8W lists up to 190 W, while D8W lists up to 170 W. These maximum combined CPU-GPU figures are not independent performance measurements, and the E8W and D8W claims should not be conflated.
