Neither upgrade is universally better: upgrade RAM if memory limits are slowing multitasking or large projects, and upgrade the SSD if you need more room for apps and files. The right choice depends on the problem you’re trying to solve—and whether your exact ASUS laptop model supports the upgrade.
Choose the upgrade that addresses your problem
| Your main issue | Upgrade to investigate | Why it may help |
|---|---|---|
| Slowdowns with several apps or large files open | RAM | RAM is working memory for applications and information in use. More memory can help with multitasking and large files, if the laptop supports an upgrade. ASUS Canada’s laptop guide identifies these as situations where more RAM may help. |
| Not enough room for apps, games, photos, or video projects | SSD capacity | An SSD stores the operating system, applications, and files. A larger drive can provide space for a growing library or project files. ASUS Canada also notes that SSDs generally offer faster startup, loading, and file access than HDDs; that does not establish that replacing one SSD with another will noticeably speed up your laptop. |
| Both memory pressure and low storage space | Compare both options | The benefits address different constraints. Check which one is limiting your actual workload and whether your model supports either or both upgrades. |
| General sluggishness, with no clear memory or storage symptom | Diagnose first | The cited ASUS guidance does not show that either upgrade fixes every cause of a slow laptop. Check memory use and available storage before spending money. |
Check your exact ASUS model before buying
Upgradeability varies by model, so a family name such as “TUF Gaming” may not identify the exact laptop. Find the complete model name or number, then check its specifications and support documentation. ASUS’s memory and storage support guide says to use the model’s technical specifications to determine whether an upgrade is supported and its maximum specifications.

For RAM
- Check whether memory is soldered, replaceable, or a combination of both.
- Confirm the supported memory type and generation, speed, number of slots, and maximum capacity for the exact model.
- Buy a SO-DIMM only if the laptop has a compatible, accessible SO-DIMM slot.
For an SSD
- Check whether the current drive can be replaced or the laptop has an additional slot.
- Confirm the supported interface and physical format, along with the model’s maximum capacity.
- If the official specifications do not resolve whether a drive fits, ask ASUS support or an authorized service provider. ASUS’s support guide recommends consulting a local authorized service center about storage expansion.
ASUS specifications are model-specific
ASUS’s examples show why it is important not to generalize a capacity or slot count across the brand. In one example in its support guide, last updated March 20, 2026, a laptop has 8 GB of non-replaceable onboard memory plus an expandable SO-DIMM slot supporting up to 8 GB, for up to 16 GB total. The same example lists support for a 512 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD. Those figures apply to that example, not to every ASUS laptop.

ASUS’s TUF Gaming A18 (2025) specifications, accessed October 4, 2026, describe two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 PCIe Gen 4×4 SSD slots. The page lists up to 32 GB DDR5-5600 memory and up to 2 TB PCIe 4.0 storage per slot, with configuration qualifications; maximum memory speeds can vary by model, and one SSD slot is limited to Gen 4×2 on listed configurations. This is another model-specific example, not a general ASUS upgrade limit.

What an upgrade can—and cannot—be expected to do
More RAM may help when memory is the constraint; more SSD capacity addresses a shortage of storage. The cited ASUS pages do not provide a head-to-head performance comparison or a percentage improvement for upgrading RAM versus an SSD across ASUS laptops. A capacity or interface specification alone cannot predict how much faster a particular laptop will feel.
If your symptoms do not clearly point to memory pressure or lack of space, check actual memory use, free storage, and your model’s upgrade options first. Without the exact model, current configuration, and workload, it is not possible to name a compatible part or determine which upgrade is better for your laptop.
