Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is a released PS5 arcade racer that trades a more focused track-racing structure for four toy-scale islands to explore. That wider setting brings free-roaming activities, discoveries and a large vehicle collection, but reviewers disagree on whether the open-world format adds enough to the racing. It is most appealing if you want Hot Wheels-themed exploration and local or online play; players looking for a tightly focused race loop may find its events repetitive.
What kind of game is Hot Wheels Infinite Rush?
The central change is its structure: instead of centering the experience on track races alone, Hot Wheels Infinite Rush places races, free-roaming activities, collectibles and discoveries across four explorable islands. Game Director Domenico Celenza described the setting as freely explorable environments recreated at a “HOT WHEELS-sized scale and style” in an Xbox Wire article published September 7, 2026. That is the official pitch, not an independent assessment of how satisfying exploration feels in play.

The collection is another major part of the appeal. Celenza says the launch roster includes more than 150 vehicles divided into four classes. Players drawn to collecting different Hot Wheels designs and trying varied vehicle types have a clear reason to look beyond the individual races.
Does the open-world design make the racing better?
The reviews point to different answers. Stephen Tailby’s PS5 Standard Edition review for Push Square, published September 6, 2026, argues that the open-world shift feels unnecessary after the Unleashed games and that the islands are not especially memorable or interesting to drive around. Tailby also credits the series’ strong handling, which carries into this entry. His assessment suggests the racing itself may still appeal even if the expanded setting does not.

Press Play Media’s September 8, 2026 review is more positive about the colorful environments, detailed vehicles, varied vehicle classes and accessible racing. It also identifies repetitive events and interruptions from loading as weaknesses. Taken together, the reviews suggest the question is not simply whether the game has plenty to do: it is whether roaming between activities and revisiting event types suits you better than a concentrated circuit-racing loop.
- Consider it if: exploring a toy-scale world, finding collectibles and building a varied car collection are part of the fun for you.
- Be cautious if: you mainly want memorable tracks and a steady sequence of distinct races; the cited reviews raise concerns about island appeal and event repetition.
How does multiplayer work on PS5?
The PlayStation Store lists single-player, local split-screen for up to four players, and online multiplayer for up to 12 players with full cross-play. Online play is optional, but the store says a PS Plus subscription is required to play online. Press Play Media reports restrictions around multiplayer progression, so players who expect online sessions to advance everything in the same way as solo play should factor that criticism into their decision.

For families or groups sharing a console, four-player split-screen is a substantial listed feature. If you plan to race with friends online, cross-play broadens the listed multiplayer option, but the available sources do not establish platform-by-platform performance or the details of progression restrictions.

The answer depends on what you want from an arcade racer. Its clearest attractions are the Hot Wheels theme, a launch roster officially described as more than 150 vehicles across four classes, four explorable islands and several ways to play with others. Its main risk is that the broader world may not make the driving loop more compelling: one PS5 review finds the islands unremarkable, while another enjoys the colorful presentation but flags repetition and loading interruptions.
