Is Google Chrome Safer Than Microsoft Edge?

Chrome and Edge both defend against common browser threats, but their strongest optional protections make different tradeoffs in exploit mitigation, privacy and compatibility.

Neither Chrome nor Microsoft Edge can be called categorically safer based on their official feature descriptions. Both include protections against dangerous sites, phishing and harmful downloads, and both update automatically. Edge adds an optional Enhanced Security mode that can apply extra exploit mitigations; Chrome offers a stronger Safe Browsing setting that shares more browsing information with Google. The better choice depends on which protections you enable, your privacy preferences and whether stricter settings interfere with sites you use.

What each browser protects against

Chrome Safe Browsing checks for unsafe sites and can warn about dangerous downloads and extensions. Its Enhanced protection adds more proactive checks and warnings, including for untrusted extensions and suspicious files. Google describes site isolation and sandboxing as additional Chrome security measures. Google’s Chrome safety overview and Safe Browsing privacy documentation explain these protections.

Edge uses Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to check the reputation of sites and downloaded files, and also documents typo protection. These checks may warn or block when something appears dangerous. The feature descriptions do not establish which browser detects more threats in real-world use. Microsoft’s Edge security overview describes its protections.

How their extra protection settings differ

Chrome Safe Browsing

Chrome offers Standard and Enhanced protection under Settings > Privacy and security > Security. Enhanced protection provides more proactive warnings, but it involves sharing additional browsing information with Google, including some URLs and page information. Standard protection offers a different data-sharing balance. Choose based on the protection and privacy tradeoff you prefer; the settings are not evidence of a comparative detection rate. See Google’s Safe Browsing privacy explanation.

#1 Best Overall

Edge Enhanced Security

In Edge, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security to review Enhanced Security mode. Microsoft documents two levels: Balanced applies additional mitigations on unfamiliar sites, while Strict applies them to every site by default. The mode can disable just-in-time JavaScript compilation and enable additional operating-system protections. Strict may interfere with some sites or tasks, and you may need to add exceptions. The feature applies to Edge version 111 or later, according to Microsoft’s Enhanced Security documentation.

Privacy is related to security, but not the same thing

Chrome’s Enhanced Safe Browsing shares more browsing information with Google than its Standard setting. Edge sends URL or file information for SmartScreen reputation checks, and it also offers Tracking Prevention levels. These are relevant privacy choices, but tracking prevention does not prove that a browser blocks more malware or exploits. Microsoft describes Edge data flows in its user data and privacy documentation and Tracking Prevention in its support guide.

Updates matter more than a feature-list winner

Google says Chrome updates automatically. Microsoft says Edge automatic updates are enabled by default and check at startup and periodically while the browser is running. Leave automatic updates enabled in either browser; the general update descriptions do not show that one receives security fixes faster than the other. See Google’s Chrome safety information and Microsoft’s Edge update documentation.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Chrome if you prefer its Safe Browsing options and are comfortable with the additional data sharing required by Enhanced protection.
  • Consider Edge if you want an optional exploit-mitigation layer, particularly Balanced mode for unfamiliar sites, and are willing to assess compatibility if using Strict.
  • Either can be a sound choice if you keep it current and leave its principal security protections enabled. Your platform, settings, privacy preferences and the sites you need to use all matter.

Use unique passwords and secure your accounts as well. Both browsers document password-related safety features, but those features do not settle which browser is safer overall.
