There is no single best website builder for every author. Choose based on what your site needs to do: present your books and link to retailers, publish a blog, grow a reader list, or take payment for books and other products. The comparison below uses published platform guides, not documented hands-on testing, so it does not claim personal trials.
Choose a builder by the job your site needs to do
Start with the primary purpose, then check what the platform requires you to assemble yourself. A simple author home page with book information and retailer links is a different project from a site with a blog, newsletter, events calendar, and on-site checkout.

- Author profile and book links: Prioritize straightforward pages, mobile-friendly design, and clear links to the retailers where your books are sold.
- Blog or portfolio: Look for a publishing workflow and design controls you can maintain over time.
- Reader-list building: Check whether signup forms and newsletter tools are built in, included at your chosen plan level, or require a separate service.
- Direct sales: Confirm that the platform supports the formats you plan to sell, payment processing, delivery or shipping, and the customer records you need.
Wix’s author-site guide recommends deciding first whether the site should connect with readers, direct them to retailer pages, sell books directly, or combine those goals. Wix’s guide to making an author website is vendor editorial guidance, rather than an independent platform assessment.

These options overlap, but they are not interchangeable: a hosted site builder, a self-hosted content management system, an author-focused service, and a newsletter platform solve different problems. The descriptions below draw in part on a comparison published by Tertulia, a company that operates an author-focused platform; treat its product and competitor characterizations as vendor claims, not independent test results. Tertulia’s comparison describes general-purpose builders as capable of handling book pages, blogs, events, and email, while saying that author-specific services organize more directly around books.

What to check before committing
Setup and ongoing maintenance
A visual, managed builder can reduce the amount of technical setup, but “no code” does not mean no upkeep. Consider how much time you want to spend on edits, integrations, backups, updates, or troubleshooting. A self-hosted system can offer more control, but you may have more components to manage.

Book-page tools
Check whether you can create a clear page for each title and include its cover, synopsis, series order, reviews where useful, and purchase links. Determine whether these are structured book records or ordinary pages you will maintain manually. Shopify’s author guide recommends separate pages for books and describes author sites as potential homes for bios, events, media, reviews, and contact information; these are suggestions from vendor editorial, not requirements for every writer. Email capture and publishing
Test the signup experience and find out what happens after a reader subscribes. Check whether forms, newsletters, campaigns, and reader-magnet delivery are included in the plan or depend on another service. Add a blog or updates section only if you expect to publish there regularly.

- Material: Made of transparent acrylic, it is sturdyand not easy to damage. The printing on thesurface is clearly visible.
Retailer links versus your own checkout
A link that sends a reader to a retailer is not a direct sale through your site. If you want your own checkout, investigate supported formats, payment-processing charges, shipping or fulfillment, taxes, and access to customer records. Wix’s writer guide describes support for ebooks, merchandise, print-on-demand, and subscriptions, but those are Wix’s own claims; confirm availability for your plan and region. Design, portability, and full cost
Balance the freedom to customize against the time and complexity that come with it. Before paying, compare monthly and annual billing, any domain-renewal cost after an introductory period, the plan needed for commerce or email features, transaction charges, and any separate services. For a site you may move later, find out what content and customer information you can export and what would need to be rebuilt.

A practical author website checklist
Build only what supports your goals. A useful starting site may include:
Recommended Free Tools
- A concise author biography and a clear contact route.
- A page for each book, with a cover, synopsis, and series placement where relevant.
- Purchase links to retailers, or a checkout if you intend to sell directly.
- A reader signup form that explains what subscribers will receive.
- Events, media materials, or reviews when they serve your audience and plans.
- A mobile-friendly layout and basic search discoverability.
- A blog or updates section only if you can keep it current.
Shopify’s guide also identifies book pages, events, media, reviews, and contact details as possible author-site elements. Its suggestions are a planning reference, not a checklist every author must follow.
Best Value
- Sign - 4 x 4 inches acrylic sign, 4 x 1.6 x 0.6 inches wooden stand.
How to make the final choice
- Write down the site’s main job. Decide whether readers need a profile, a route to retailer listings, a newsletter, regular publishing, direct checkout, or some combination.
- List the features that job requires. Separate must-haves from optional features, such as events, reviews, or merchandise.
- Compare the whole workflow. Check how you will add book pages, collect email signups, update content, and handle orders if you sell directly.
- Check plan and regional details. Verify current pricing, feature limits, payment rules, integrations, and export options with the provider before committing.
- Choose the least complicated option that meets your needs. A larger feature set is not an advantage if you will not use or maintain it.
For authors considering Squarespace, its official affiliate page says accepted affiliates may earn payouts for qualifying website or commerce subscriptions driven from a first-time customer, and that applicants may be accepted or refused. The page does not state a fixed payout in the cited information. This is relevant if you encounter affiliate links while comparing platforms, not a reason to choose a builder.
