Google Chrome can be a reasonable browser to use when it is kept up to date and its security protections are enabled, but no browser can guarantee safety. After Chrome downloads a security update, restart the browser if prompted so the update takes effect, confirm Chrome is current, then review Safety Check and your Safe Browsing setting.
What to do after a Chrome security update
-
In desktop Chrome, select More → Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on this page. See Google’s desktop update instructions.

If Relaunch appears, save any work and select it. A downloaded update may not be active until Chrome restarts. Google says ordinary tabs and windows normally reopen, but Incognito windows do not. If you postpone the restart, the update applies the next time Chrome restarts.

After Chrome reopens, return to More → Help → About Google Chrome and check that it reports the browser is up to date. If there is no Relaunch option, Google says Chrome is already on the latest version.

Open Settings → Privacy and security → Safety Check. Review the results and follow the on-screen instructions for any issues Chrome identifies. Safety Check can surface recommendations about updates, Safe Browsing, compromised or reused passwords, unused site permissions, notifications, and potentially harmful extensions. See Google’s Safety Check and security settings guide.
-
Review your Safe Browsing level and decide whether Standard or Enhanced protection better fits your needs and privacy preferences. Neither setting prevents every threat.
-
Keep your operating system and other apps updated too. Remove extensions you do not need, use unique strong passwords, and consider enabling two-step verification for your Google Account. Google outlines these broader account-security steps in its account security guidance.

How safe is Chrome?
Chrome has automatic updates and built-in Safe Browsing protections that warn about sites, downloads, and extensions Google identifies as dangerous. Those features can reduce risk, but they do not make browsing risk-free: an update may still be waiting for a restart, a harmful item may not yet be known to Safe Browsing, and security also depends on the device, accounts, and choices you make online.
Google recommends using some level of Safe Browsing protection. The practical choice is whether Standard protection’s handling of known dangers is sufficient for you or whether you prefer Enhanced protection’s broader warnings and accept its additional data sharing. Google describes how the feature works; that description is not an independent audit of its privacy architecture.
Standard vs. Enhanced Safe Browsing
| Setting | Protection Google describes | Data handling Google describes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard protection | On by default. Warns about known dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions. | Uses locally stored lists and, in some cases, sends obfuscated URL portions through privacy servers. Google says full URLs and bits of page content are sent only when a site does something suspicious. |
| Enhanced protection | Chrome’s strongest protection level, with warnings about potentially dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions, including some Google did not previously know about. | Sends more information to Google in real time. Depending on the described case, this can include URLs and small samples of page content, downloads, extension activity, or system information. |
These are Google’s descriptions of the two settings. Standard protection also sends some information in certain circumstances; Enhanced protection sends more to support real-time checks. Review Google’s Safe Browsing protection-level explanation and its Safe Browsing privacy overview if you want the details before choosing.
How Chrome updates work across devices
On desktop, Chrome updates automatically when a new version is available, but a restart may be needed before a pending update takes effect. Google documents GoogleUpdater on Windows and macOS. On Android, updates are managed through Google Play; on iPhone and iPad, they are managed through the Apple App Store. The exact update flow therefore depends on the platform. Google says Windows and macOS update checks can send information such as the release channel, basic hardware information, Chrome version, installation duration, and recent use. Mobile update delivery uses the respective app stores, while Google also uses its servers for active-install counts and out-of-date notifications. Details are in Google’s guide to how Chrome data is handled during installation and updates.

Repeated update failures may have ordinary causes, such as a device being offline or security software blocking the updater. Google recommends these checks:
-
Make sure the device is connected to the internet.
-
Check whether firewall, antivirus, or parental-control settings are blocking Chrome’s update services.
-
Restart the device if the update may not have completed, then check again in Chrome.
