On most computers, Chrome checks for updates automatically in the background; there is no universal desktop switch to turn on. To check for an update now, open More (⋮) > Help > About Google Chrome. If Chrome offers Relaunch, select it to finish installing the update. Phones, Chromebooks, Linux computers, and managed work devices use different update controls.
Update Chrome on a Windows or Mac computer
- Open Chrome and select More (⋮) > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Leave the About page open while Chrome checks for updates. If an update is ready, select Relaunch to apply it. If there is no Relaunch option, Google says Chrome is already up to date. See Google’s Chrome update instructions.
Chrome normally completes an available update after you close and reopen the browser. If Chrome displays a pending update in the toolbar, use its relaunch option or close and reopen Chrome. Ordinary tabs and windows reopen after a restart, but Incognito windows do not. Google’s overview of this behavior is at How to Update Chrome to the Latest Version.

Mac: automatic updates for all users
Google documents an Automatically update Chrome for all users option on the About page when Chrome is installed in the Applications folder. If that option is available, use it to enable automatic updates for all users of that Mac.
Update Chrome on Linux
On Linux, Chrome updates are handled through the package manager rather than a separate universal switch in Chrome’s browser settings. Use the package manager configured for your installation to check for and install updates.

Update Chrome on a Chromebook
On a Chromebook, Chrome browser updates arrive through ChromeOS updates. Check for and install a ChromeOS update instead of looking for a separate browser auto-update control.
Update Chrome on Android or iPhone and iPad
On mobile devices, Chrome updates come from the device’s app store. Whether they install automatically depends on the app-store settings; if automatic updates are disabled, install an available Chrome update manually.

If a setting is unavailable, says it is controlled by an administrator, or updates do not behave as expected, the device or browser may be managed by a workplace or school. Chrome Enterprise policies can control update behavior, timing, version targeting, release channels, and relaunch notifications. Contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its policy. Google recommends keeping auto-updates enabled so users receive security fixes and new features; see Manage Chrome updates (Windows) and Chrome policy management guidance.
