Not necessarily. Low liquidity in an Aave collateral reserve does not by itself stop GHO borrowing through Aave V3, because that GHO is minted rather than drawn from supplier deposits. But thin trading liquidity for GHO, or limited capacity to swap it through the GHO Stability Module (GSM), can make its market price more vulnerable to moving away from $1.
“Aave liquidity” can mean several different things
There is no single pool whose balance determines whether GHO holds its peg. Aave reserve liquidity, the capacity to mint GHO, market depth for trading GHO, and the GSM’s ability to exchange GHO for another stablecoin are separate constraints.

| Liquidity dimension | What a shortage can affect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Aave collateral reserve | Supplying or withdrawing that asset, and the condition of positions that use it as collateral. | Reserve liquidity and utilization, collateral eligibility, and liquidation conditions. |
| GHO facilitator headroom | How much additional GHO a particular facilitator can mint. | That facilitator’s bucket capacity and current bucket level. |
| Secondary-market GHO depth | Slippage and price impact when buying or selling GHO; thin depth can also weaken arbitrage. | Depth and balances on the specific venue, trading volume, incentives, and price deviation. |
| GSM conversion capacity | How much GHO can be swapped for an approved stablecoin under the module’s current settings. | Funded inventory, exposure caps, fees, pricing strategy, and whether conversions are frozen. |
| Governance response | How issuance incentives and module settings may change. | Current proposals, delegated authority, its limits, and on-chain parameter values. |
So “Aave pools are low” is not precise enough to establish peg risk. It matters which asset, market, chain, and measurement time you mean.

For the Aave V3 Ethereum borrowing path described in Aave’s GHO protocol documentation, a borrower supplies eligible collateral and GHO is minted. It is not taken from a pool of GHO deposited by suppliers. Aave puts it this way: “Since GHO is created and not borrowed from suppliers, GHO is not subject to restrictions on available liquidity, and instead, the Facilitator cap and collateralization requirements define the limits to which GHO can be minted as calculated below.”

That distinction means low available liquidity in an unrelated Aave reserve is not, by itself, the same as a shortage of GHO to lend. Minting is bounded by the borrower’s collateralization and the relevant facilitator’s remaining capacity. If an account becomes undercollateralized, it can be liquidated; liquidation repays GHO debt and affects outstanding supply.
Aave lists several facilitator categories, including Aave V3, cross-chain CCIP, GSM, and Flashmint. They have different purposes and capacity limits, so no single Aave pool describes the entire GHO supply system.

How thin GHO trading markets can put pressure on the peg
Even if GHO can be minted through Aave, the market where someone wants to buy or sell it may be shallow. A large trade against limited pool depth can move the price more than the same trade would in a deeper market. Thin liquidity can also make arbitrage less effective: traders may be less able or willing to buy discounted GHO or sell overpriced GHO in sufficient size to pull its price toward $1.
Aave governance materials have identified insufficient decentralized-exchange liquidity as a depeg or manipulation risk. This is a market-depth concern, not proof that a particular pool is currently thin or that GHO is presently off peg.

What the GSM can—and cannot—do
The GSM provides conversion paths between GHO and governance-approved stablecoins. Aave’s help documentation describes an initial fixed 1:1 pricing strategy, while the framework can support fixed or dynamic pricing. Fees and exposure caps apply, and oracle-based price bounds can freeze conversions. These controls help define how the mechanism operates, but they also mean it is not an unlimited, unconditional exchange at exactly $1.
A March 2026 Aave governance post describes a RemoteGSM arrangement using a common GHO reserve and direct facilitator model, activated through AIPs 452 and 453. It explains a below-peg arbitrage route: buy GHO at a discount and redeem it through a GSM. Whether that route can absorb selling pressure depends on current usable inventory and applicable limits; the post does not establish those live balances.

Aave describes GHO as designed to maintain a dollar peg and as overcollateralized. Those design properties do not mean every market trade will clear at $1, or that a user can always exchange any amount of GHO for one dollar’s worth of another asset. The result depends on market depth, collateral and facilitator constraints, GSM inventory, fees, exposure limits, and whether conversions are enabled.

Governance can adjust parameters, within documented bounds
Aave’s GHO protocol documentation describes delegated GHO Steward authority over certain parameters. The undated documentation page, crawled within six days of 7 October 2026, lists a $0.995–$1.005 trailing 30-day average price range as relevant to rate adjustments, a maximum adjustment pace of 500 basis points per two-day period, an upper rate boundary of 25% APR, and authority to raise a borrow-cap threshold up to a total borrow cap of 100 million GHO. These are documentation figures, not a live reading of current governance settings or contract state.
Governance changes may affect incentives or the capacity to mint, but they are not the same as immediate market liquidity. Any assessment that relies on a particular parameter should be checked against the current governance record and on-chain value.
How to assess a specific low-liquidity concern
- Name the market. Identify the collateral reserve, GHO trading venue, facilitator, or GSM instance in question, along with its chain.
- Check the relevant constraint. For Aave borrowing, inspect eligible collateral and facilitator headroom. For a trade, inspect venue depth and likely price impact. For a GSM swap, inspect inventory, caps, fees, pricing rules, and freeze status.
- Match the number to its timestamp. Pool balances, bucket levels, market depth, price, and GSM inventory change. A published historical figure should not be treated as a live balance.
- Separate peg design from execution certainty. A mechanism intended to pull GHO toward $1 can still have finite capacity, and market trades can occur away from that level.
The official Aave documentation and governance material establish how these mechanisms are intended to work, but they do not provide a single live liquidity reading across all of them. Without current market and contract data, a general claim that “Aave liquidity is low” cannot establish whether GHO’s peg is under pressure at a particular moment.
