You can transfer files between a Chromebook and a Windows PC with Quick Share for a nearby wireless handoff, a USB drive for an offline copy, or cloud storage when you can upload files on one device and download them on the other. The best choice depends on whether both devices are nearby, whether you have internet access, and what storage or sharing features your devices allow.
Choose the transfer method
| Method | Best for | What you need | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Share | Sending files between nearby devices without first uploading them | Compatible devices, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and sharing visibility set appropriately | Compatibility, visibility settings, or workplace restrictions can prevent discovery |
| USB flash drive or external drive | Offline transfers or keeping a removable copy | A drive both computers can connect to and read | Check connectors and file-system compatibility |
| Cloud storage | Moving files when the devices are in different places or keeping them accessible online | Internet access and an account for the chosen service | Large uploads and downloads can take time |
Transfer files with Quick Share
Google renamed Nearby Share to Quick Share. Google’s Chromebook instructions include nearby Windows PCs as possible recipients. Quick Share is most convenient when both computers are close and supported; it is separate from Microsoft’s similarly named Nearby sharing feature.

Send from a Chromebook
- On the Chromebook, open the Files app and locate the file or files.
- Right-click a file, then choose Share > Quick Share.
- Select the Windows PC from the available recipients and send the files.
- If prompted on the receiving device, accept the transfer.
For a Chromebook to be discoverable, its Quick Share visibility must allow the sender to find it. Google describes options for the user’s own devices, contacts, hidden status, or temporary availability to everyone. The Chromebook requirement listed by Google is ChromeOS 91 or later. A work or school administrator may restrict sharing. See Google’s Chromebook Quick Share instructions.

Prepare a Windows PC to receive
Google’s Windows app supports 64-bit Windows 10 and later; ARM-based devices require Windows 11 or later. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth should be enabled. Google’s app is intended for non-Samsung PCs; Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app. Requirements and app availability can change, so check Google’s current Quick Share for Windows page before installing or troubleshooting.

If the devices cannot find each other
- Check that Quick Share is available on both devices and that the receiving device is visible.
- Confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the Windows PC.
- Turn Quick Share off and back on, or restart the Chromebook, as Google recommends.
- If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, ask whether sharing is restricted.
Transfer files with a USB drive
A USB flash drive or external hard drive works without an internet connection. Google recommends compatible USB thumb drives and external hard drives for moving files to a Chromebook.
- Connect the drive to the computer that currently has the files.
- Copy the files onto the drive and wait for the copy to finish.
- Safely eject the drive before unplugging it.
- Connect it to the other computer, then copy the files to the desired folder.
- Eject the drive safely when finished.
Chromebooks can access external devices formatted as FAT, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS, though Google notes that some devices may not work. Check the connectors on the drive and both computers; an adapter may be necessary if they differ. Work or school management can also restrict external storage. See Google’s guidance on using external storage with a Chromebook and how to safely remove a storage device.

- Both computers are nearby and you only need to send files: Try Quick Share, provided both devices are compatible and visible.

- The computers are in different locations or you want online access: Use cloud storage such as Google Drive, accounting for upload and download time.
