Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is real as a research topic and a practical label for improving a website’s visibility in AI-generated search answers. But it is not a standardized discipline with a proven, universal playbook—and visibility in an answer does not automatically mean more traffic or sales.
What GEO means—and what it doesn’t
Generative engines retrieve web sources and use generative models to synthesize answers, sometimes with inline citations. GEO describes efforts to improve the visibility of source websites in those answers. The term has an academic origin, not just a marketing one: Pranjal Aggarwal and coauthors presented their work, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” at the Proceedings of the 30th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD 2024), pages 5–16. That does not make GEO a settled science. A generated answer can give cited sources different prominence, space, and influence, so a simple ranking position does not capture the whole result. The paper describes impression and relevance functions as subjective and not yet well defined, and notes the lack of a standard framework at the time of the study. GEO is best understood as an evolving research and practice area—not a formally standardized replacement for SEO.

Aggarwal and coauthors introduced GEO-bench, a benchmark containing 10,000 queries. In the study’s tested queries and settings, the authors reported that GEO methods improved visibility by up to 40%. They also reported improvements of up to 37% in their tests on Perplexity.ai. These are experimental results tied to the paper’s visibility measure and conditions, not expected lifts for any particular site, industry, platform, or business.

The study found that methods such as adding citations, relevant quotations, and statistics improved source visibility in its tests, but effectiveness varied by domain. That supports a reasonable editorial hypothesis: make claims verifiable and evidence easy to identify. It does not support stuffing pages with citations or statistics, or adding material that is not useful or well supported.
Most importantly, the reported gains concern visibility—not proof of lasting organic discovery, qualified visits, leads, or sales. The study does not establish that GEO tactics reliably improve those outcomes across platforms.

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?
There is overlap, but the terms are not interchangeable in every context. GEO focuses on whether and how a source appears in generated answers. SEO covers a broader set of practices for helping pages perform in search. For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says the usual SEO fundamentals still apply and that there are no special optimization requirements for those features.
Google’s guidance says pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search; eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page. Its recommendations include allowing crawling, making content discoverable through internal links, keeping important information in text, providing a good page experience, and ensuring structured data matches visible content. That is Google’s guidance for its own Search features, not a rule for ChatGPT, Perplexity, or every other answer engine. Google does not present GEO as a separate optimization discipline in this guidance. It also says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, and that answers and links can vary as they use different models and techniques. AI-feature traffic is included in Search Console’s overall Web search reporting; that reporting is useful for Google Search, but it is not a universal cross-platform GEO measurement standard.

- Visibility: Does the system retrieve or cite the page? Record the answer and its citations; results can vary by query and platform.
- Influence: Does the page’s evidence or language materially inform the answer? A citation count alone cannot show how much a source shaped the response.
- Business impact: Does the visibility lead to qualified visits, conversions, or another outcome that matters? Measure these separately from citations and answer appearances.
A practical evaluation can use a fixed set of representative prompts, with the platform, date, location, and cited sources recorded each time. Repeat the checks and compare them with a baseline; where possible, connect the observations to search traffic and conversion data. This is a measurement approach, not an official universal protocol.

If you are assessing a GEO strategy or vendor, ask what outcome it measures, which platforms it covers, whether results repeat over time, and what baseline or control it uses. Check whether it distinguishes answer citations from traffic and revenue. A visibility score alone does not establish business impact, and there is no general market-wide figure here that proves GEO reliably increases traffic or revenue.
