Ford has confirmed it will return to the FIA World Rally Championship as a factory-backed team in 2028, with an all-new rally car planned to debut in 2029. The car will take inspiration from one of Ford’s upcoming European passenger vehicles—but Ford has not named that vehicle or confirmed a Fiesta successor.
Is Ford bringing back the Fiesta?
Not on the basis of the WRC announcement. Ford says its future rally car will draw inspiration from an upcoming European passenger vehicle, but does not identify the model or say it will be a Fiesta. Calling the rally car a Fiesta successor—or treating it as proof that Ford will revive the Fiesta—goes beyond what Ford has confirmed.

Ford’s U.S. Fiesta page says the company is no longer producing the model and provides support information for current owners; it does not announce a replacement. That page describes Ford’s U.S. position and should not be taken as a statement about every market. Ford’s U.S. Fiesta page

Ford describes its planned European passenger lineup as five “multi-energy” electric vehicles and hybrids. The announcement does not name the vehicles, say which one will inspire the rally car, or establish that the lineup includes a Fiesta successor. Ford Europe president Jim Baumbick said the next generation of European vehicles should carry the “unapologetic spirit” of Ford’s rallying heritage; that describes an intended character, not a confirmed model or body style. Is the new WRC car based on a Fiesta successor?
That has not been confirmed. The supported claim is narrower: Ford says the rally car will draw inspiration from one of its upcoming European passenger vehicles. The announcement does not say the rally car will be a direct adaptation of a road car, name a donor model, or connect the project to the Fiesta.
Mark Rushbrook, Ford Racing’s global director, described the WRC legacy as having a “direct connection to the fun and exciting cars” Ford produced. This explains why Ford is linking the competition programme with future road cars, but it does not identify any of those cars. Until Ford names the model, a Fiesta connection remains speculation.

What WRC27 changes mean for Ford’s return
The WRC27 regulations take effect in 2027, ahead of Ford’s planned factory return. The FIA says the framework allows both manufacturers and independent projects to design, homologate and compete. It identifies Ford as the fourth constructor committed to WRC27, after Toyota and independent projects Project Rally One and WRT Rally1 Spain. FIA announcement

What to watch for next
The key unanswered question is which upcoming passenger vehicle will inspire Ford’s 2029 rally car. A confirmed model name would clarify whether the connection is to a new small car, another vehicle in Ford’s European lineup, or something else. Until then, there are no confirmed Fiesta-successor models to compare, and the WRC announcement is not a replacement announcement.
