Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—on Windows, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) requires kernel-level access to help detect cheats. That does not mean its documented Windows service runs continuously: Epic says it starts with a protected game and stops when the game exits. Linux support through Wine or Proton is a separate, developer-enabled setup, and Epic’s documented Linux components do not list a Linux kernel driver.
What “kernel-level” means on Windows
Windows separates ordinary applications, which run in user mode, from operating-system components and drivers that run in kernel mode. Kernel-mode drivers have broader access: Microsoft explains that a driver is not isolated from other drivers or the operating system, so a fault can affect system data or crash Windows. That describes the privileges and risks of kernel-mode software generally; it is not, by itself, a judgment about EAC’s quality. Microsoft’s explanation of user mode and kernel mode provides more detail.

How EAC runs during a documented Windows game session
Epic’s EOS anti-cheat documentation identifies three Windows components: EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe, the installer; start_protected_game.exe, the bootstrapper; and EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe, a Windows service executable that initializes other components. Epic says the service is installed with the game, the bootstrapper starts it when launching a protected game, and the service stops when the game exits. In this documented EOS lifecycle, EAC is linked to the protected game session—not described as an always-on-at-boot service. See Epic’s Anti-Cheat Interfaces documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes Linux or Steam Deck support mean EAC uses a Linux kernel driver?
No such conclusion follows from compatibility alone. Epic describes a separate Linux client path for Windows games running through Wine or Proton. Developers must use the required SDK version, activate the Linux client module, and test and activate module updates; support is not automatic for every game. Epic’s documented Linux component list includes a start_protected_game bootstrapper but does not list a Linux kernel driver. The documentation therefore supports a distinction between the Windows kernel-access statement and the separately configured Linux client path; it does not establish that the Linux path uses no privileged mechanisms of any kind.

What the Windows 11 compatibility warning does—and does not—say
Epic’s support article about a Windows 11 driver-loading error says EAC requires kernel-level access to help detect cheats and that certain EAC drivers are currently incompatible with Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection. This is a specific compatibility issue involving some drivers and a Windows security feature. It does not establish that every EAC driver fails, that every Windows system is affected, or that users should disable the security feature. Read the Epic support article on EAC driver error 1275 for the affected context.

What you can conclude about EAC
- Windows: Epic explicitly says EAC requires kernel-level access to help detect cheats.
- Always running: The documented EOS service starts with a protected game and stops when that game exits; this does not support calling it an always-on-at-boot service.
- Linux through Wine or Proton: Availability depends on developer configuration. Epic’s listed Linux components do not include a kernel driver, but that omission alone does not prove the absence of every privileged mechanism.
- Security and reliability: Kernel-mode privilege has broader system impact than ordinary application privilege. That general fact does not establish that EAC is unsafe or that it causes problems on a particular PC.
