Dropshipping can be worth considering if you can attract customers, choose reliable suppliers, and manage customer service and compliance. It reduces the need to store and ship your own inventory, but it does not make the supplier responsible for your customer relationship or guarantee a profit. Whether it makes sense depends on your costs, delivery promises, target market, and ability to handle problems.
What dropshipping changes—and what it does not
Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method: your store lists products without keeping them in stock. After a customer orders, you buy the item from a third-party supplier, which ships it directly to the customer. Shopify explains the model in its dropshipping overview.

The supplier takes on storage, packing, and delivery, but you remain the seller in the customer relationship. Shopify says the store operator is responsible for setting prices, collecting payment and applicable taxes, following relevant laws, and responding to support requests such as returns and refunds. A supplier’s fulfillment role does not transfer those customer-facing duties to them.

Less inventory to manage
You do not need to stock every product or ship orders from your own premises. That can reduce warehousing needs and the risk of being left with unsold inventory. It can also make it easier to test a product range without first buying stock in bulk.

Less control over fulfillment
Because another business stores and ships the product, you have less direct control over product quality, processing, and delivery. A supplier’s mistake can still become your customer’s problem—and your store may be the first place the customer seeks help.
Shopify recommends ordering from a supplier to check processing and arrival times before choosing them. That practical check can reveal how the product is packaged, how long fulfillment actually takes, and whether the delivery experience matches what you plan to promise.
Customer service remains your job
You need to handle questions, complaints, and refund requests, including when a supplier causes a delay or fulfillment problem. Consider whether you can respond promptly and resolve issues without being able to inspect or ship the product yourself.

Shipping is a real cost, not a free extra
Shopify describes several ways to handle shipping: include its cost in the product price, charge a flat rate, or pass on the supplier’s shipping charge. Whichever approach you choose, price using the actual supplier charges and the delivery promise you can support. Shopify’s shipping guidance discusses these options.
Work out whether the economics make sense
There is no universal startup budget, profit margin, or likelihood of success established by the available Shopify guidance. Instead, estimate the costs and obligations for your specific products, supplier, and market. Shopify’s business guide outlines operating considerations, but a market-size estimate is not evidence that a typical store will make money.

- Your ecommerce platform and other operating expenses.
- Payment costs, taxes, and any applicable customs charges.
- Refunds and the time required to support customers.
Shopify’s 2025/2026 guide estimates more than $476 billion in ecommerce sales for dropshipping in 2026. That is Shopify’s estimate of market sales, not a measured result for a typical store and not evidence that an individual seller is likely to be profitable. See its dropshipping statistics guide.
Check suppliers before you sell
Assess suppliers against the costs and customer promises that matter for your business. A low listed product price is not enough if shipping, delivery delays, product quality, or return arrangements make the full offer unsuitable.
- Total cost: Compare product price, shipping, and relevant taxes or customs costs.
- Quality: Order the product and inspect what arrives.
- Processing and delivery: Check actual times before advertising a delivery estimate.
- Returns: Find out where returns go, who pays for them, and how supplier problems are handled.
Review product, delivery, and legal obligations
Before listing a product, check the product-safety rules and any required licenses, certifications, markings, warnings, or instructions in the markets you plan to serve. The relevant requirements depend on both the product and the jurisdictions involved. Shopify’s legal guidance is a starting point, not legal advice.

Make processing and shipping information clear, including additional fees such as customs charges where applicable. Publish an accurate, publicly accessible refund policy that specifies the return period, destination, and who pays return costs.
For cross-border sales, investigate taxes, customs, delivery terms, and disclosures for the specific countries involved. Shopify’s guidance discusses VAT and customs considerations for some EU imports and tax-nexus scenarios in the United States; these are jurisdiction-specific examples, not one global rule. Consult the applicable authorities or a qualified professional when you need advice for your circumstances.
A U.S. Federal Trade Commission complaint involving online sales arbitrage and dropshipping fulfillment is a specific enforcement matter, not a comprehensive statement of every marketplace’s current policy. It is a useful reminder that outsourcing fulfillment does not make it safe to obscure who sold a product. Read the FTC announcement for the details of that case.
When dropshipping may—or may not—be worth it
It may suit you if avoiding inventory storage is valuable, your supplier can meet a delivery promise you are comfortable advertising, and you can acquire customers while managing support and compliance. It is a weaker fit if the product economics depend on optimistic sales or shipping assumptions, you need tight control of quality and delivery, or you cannot absorb the work of resolving supplier-related problems.
Compare dropshipping with holding inventory using the same practical questions: how much capital and storage each option requires, how much control you need over quality and delivery, the total landed cost, the reliability and speed of fulfillment, how returns will work, and whether you can bring in and support customers. The better choice is the one that fits your product and operating capacity—not the one with the simplest-sounding fulfillment model.
