DreamHost DreamCompute can suit developers who want an unmanaged Linux cloud server, root access, and OpenStack-based automation—but it is not an automatic fit. You are responsible for configuring and operating the server, its infrastructure is currently described as U.S.-based, and data on a deleted instance or volume may be unrecoverable without a separate copy or snapshot. Whether it works for you depends on your stack, workload, location needs, and willingness to manage backups and server operations.
What DreamHost means by cloud hosting
DreamHost’s cloud hosting product is DreamCompute, a cloud computing service built on OpenStack. Its virtual servers run on KVM, networking uses OpenStack Neutron, and block storage uses Ceph integrated through Cinder. You can manage compute, networking, storage, and snapshots through the Horizon dashboard or OpenStack CLI, and use OpenStack APIs to automate provisioning.

That architecture gives developers control over how they configure a server and automate infrastructure. It does not, by itself, establish how fast or easy the service is to use, or how it compares in performance with other providers.
DreamCompute is distinct from shared hosting, DreamPress managed WordPress hosting, and DreamHost’s VPS products. In particular, DreamHost announced a separate Self-Managed VPS in June 2026; it is a different product, not a new name for DreamCompute.

Who DreamCompute is—and is not—for
It may fit developers who want to manage their own stack
- You need Linux with root or sudo access and want to choose and maintain your server software.
- You want to provision or manage infrastructure through OpenStack tools and APIs.
- You want to configure virtual networks and scale by increasing VM resources or adding VMs.
- Your workload fits one of the published instance sizes and a U.S.-based service location works for your users and data.
Look elsewhere if you need someone else to operate the server
- DreamCompute is fully unmanaged: you handle configuration and server operations.
- It currently offers Linux distributions, not Windows, and does not include email hosting.
- If you need managed operations, DreamHost’s comparison describes Managed VPS as managed by DreamHost; it does not provide root access. Its VPS offering is different from DreamCompute.
DreamCompute instance sizes and published prices

Storage and bandwidth affect the total
DreamHost’s billing page says each account includes 100 GB of block storage. It lists additional 100 GB chunks in US-East 2 at $10 per month each, charged on the total monthly storage allotment rather than actual use. The same page says bandwidth is currently free but may change at DreamHost’s discretion. Include storage needs in your budget and verify current terms rather than treating bandwidth as permanently free.

Location, scaling, and recovery considerations
Confirm the region works for your users and data
DreamHost’s FAQ identifies Ashburn, Virginia, and says its cloud services are in the United States. That makes region and latency important selection criteria if your application depends on serving users elsewhere or meeting data-location requirements. Check DreamHost’s current region and networking information for your intended deployment.

Plan scaling around the application
DreamHost describes vertical scaling as increasing the resources assigned to a VM, and horizontal scaling as adding VMs. The available flavors provide the published resource sizes above; the right choice depends on your application’s actual memory and CPU requirements. The service description does not establish a performance result for a particular workload.
Make backups before deleting resources
DreamHost says a deleted instance or volume cannot be recovered if its data was not copied elsewhere or captured in an image-based snapshot first. Before deleting or rebuilding resources, make and verify an independent copy or snapshot that you can restore.

DreamCompute versus DreamHost’s VPS options
Choose based on the balance you need between infrastructure control and operational responsibility. DreamCompute is the OpenStack-based cloud product; VPS is a separate product family with its own management options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Option | Control and operations | Published details relevant to developers |
|---|---|---|
| DreamCompute | Unmanaged Linux cloud service; customers configure and operate the environment. | OpenStack dashboard, CLI, and APIs; published instance flavors have monthly billing caps. |
| DreamHost VPS | DreamHost says its VPS provides a full-root Linux environment that customers configure, maintain, and secure. | A separate VPS product, not DreamCompute. |
| DreamHost Managed VPS | Managed by DreamHost; DreamHost says it does not provide root access. | A possible fit if managed operations matter more than root-level control. |
| DreamHost Self-Managed VPS | Separate service announced June 18, 2026; DreamHost describes it as self-managed with full root access. | The announcement says plans start at $5.99 per month, include NVMe SSD storage and unmetered bandwidth, and offer an app library including n8n, OpenClaw, PostgreSQL, Supabase, Dokploy, and GitLab CE. These are vendor-reported details; check the live plan page for current terms. |
DreamHost’s June 2026 announcement does not establish that Self-Managed VPS is faster, more reliable, or better value than DreamCompute. Compare the current plan details against your resource needs and preferred operating model rather than treating the two products as interchangeable.
