Current editorial picks include the Epson LS9000 for dedicated home theater, the BenQ GP520 as a compact 4K option, the Hisense PX3-Pro for ultra-short-throw placement, and portable models from Samsung and XGIMI. Those are category recommendations from different publications, not a single head-to-head ranking.
Start with the room and projector placement
Before comparing resolution or features, decide where the projector can go and how large an image you need. Standard-throw, short-throw and ultra-short-throw (UST) models have different placement geometry. Check the manufacturer’s projection-distance guidance for the exact screen size you intend to use; a projector that cannot be positioned correctly is the wrong fit even if its specifications look attractive.

- Dedicated dark room: Prioritize contrast and image quality. RTINGS emphasizes contrast for dark home-theater rooms in its 2026 4K roundup.
- Shared living room: Ambient light can wash out an image. A brighter model may be more useful for sports or casual viewing, but brightness claims need to be compared carefully because sources may use different measurement standards.
- Limited distance from the screen: Consider short-throw or UST placement, then verify the model’s supported image sizes and geometry. TechRadar lists the Hisense PX3-Pro for an 80–150-inch image.
- Outdoor or temporary viewing: Portability and quick setup matter, but low brightness can restrict when and where the image is watchable.
How to read resolution and brightness claims
“4K” may mean pixel-shifted 4K
RTINGS reports that every model in its 2026 4K projector roundup uses pixel shifting rather than a native 3840 × 2160 imaging chip. Pixel shifting can produce a sharper image than conventional 1080p and make 4K-like projection more affordable, but it is not the same as a native 4K imaging chip. Check the specific model’s imaging technology rather than relying on the 4K label alone.

Brightness figures need their measurement wording
ANSI lumens and other lumen specifications should not be treated as directly equivalent without matching measurement methods. The figures below are specifications as reported in TechRadar’s 2026 guide, not measurements made for this article. RTINGS focuses on contrast for dark-room viewing, while TechRadar describes the high-brightness Epson QL7000 as suitable for sports with ambient light.

Which projector fits each kind of buyer?
For a dedicated home theater
TechRadar names the Epson LS9000 its home-theater choice. Its listed 4K resolution, 2,200-lumen specification, HDR10+ and 4K/120Hz support make it a candidate for a cinema room that also sees gaming use. The missing dynamic tone mapping, 3D support and Auto Low Latency Mode are material if any of those features are priorities. TechRadar’s guide lists a price snapshot of $3,999, £2,999 and AU$7,299; these regional prices are time-sensitive and should be checked before buying.
For a compact 4K setup
The BenQ GP520 is TechRadar’s affordable ultra-compact 4K option. Its appeal is the combination of a small form factor, built-in streaming and speakers, and a reported 2,600 ANSI lumens. However, no optical adjustments means placement is less forgiving, while average color and the external power brick are practical compromises. Measure the room and plan cable and power-brick placement before settling on it.

- Digital video processing — Real-time, 12-bit analog-to-digital video processing for smooth tonal transitions; helps eliminate banding, blocking and other compression artifacts from the final visual performance
For a near-wall installation
TechRadar selects the Hisense PX3-Pro for UST use and lists an 80–150-inch image range. Its three HDMI 2.1 ports and gaming mode may suit a living room where the projector needs to sit close to the screen. UST does not eliminate the need to plan: verify the exact distance and screen dimensions for your installation rather than assuming the listed range fits every room.
For portability
The Samsung The Freestyle 2nd Gen trades image brightness and resolution for a compact 1080p design, with TechRadar listing 230 ANSI lumens and a 30–100-inch image. Its Tizen platform and optional battery accessory may help for flexible placement, but its micro-HDMI connection and low brightness deserve attention. For buyers seeking a portable model with pixel-shift 4K and more automatic setup assistance, RTINGS’ current portable roundup instead selects the XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K, which it describes as small and lightweight and equipped with motorized zoom, autofocus, automatic keystone correction and obstacle avoidance.

For sports in a brighter room
TechRadar lists the Epson QL7000 as its sports projector, with a 10,000-lumen specification and support for a 60–300-inch image. Its high stated brightness and lens choices target large-scale viewing with ambient light, but the guide also notes a high price and some loss of shadow detail. The cited summary does not specify the lumen measurement standard, so do not compare that number directly with ANSI-lumen figures without checking the underlying specification.
Gaming: check the mode, not just the label
Compare supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations, input lag, variable refresh rate (VRR) and HDMI capabilities. A high refresh rate at one resolution does not mean the projector supports that rate at every resolution. RTINGS reports that the XGIMI TITAN Noir Max supports 4K at 60Hz or 1080p up to 240Hz, with VRR and low input lag. TechRadar reports 4K/120Hz and low input lag for its Epson LS9000 pick, while its Hisense PX3-Pro listing highlights a 240Hz gaming mode. These are model-specific claims from different publications and should not be read as results from a shared test.

Two-way Bluetooth 5.2 lets you use the projector as a standalone Bluetooth speaker or connect to external Bluetooth speakers or headphones for full surround sound. - Confirm the resolution/refresh pair your console or PC will actually use.
- Check whether VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode are supported; they are separate features.
- Count suitable HDMI ports and check which port supports eARC if you need audio passthrough.
- Look for a measured or clearly attributed input-lag result rather than assuming every “gaming” mode performs alike.
Setup and smart features can change the buying decision
Projectors vary widely in how much setup work they automate. Lens shift and motorized zoom can help accommodate placement, while autofocus, keystone correction and obstacle avoidance can simplify repositioning. These features do not replace checking the projector’s throw distance and supported image size. Also inspect integrated streaming, speakers, ports and power arrangements: the GP520 includes streaming and speakers but has a bulky external power brick, while the Samsung Freestyle’s listed connection is micro-HDMI.

Different review outlets evaluate different models and use different methods, so their “best” labels are not one universal ranking. TechRadar says its team evaluates display quality under different lighting, peak brightness, contrast and color-gamut coverage. RTINGS says it buys and tests projectors using standardized methodology and publishes its test methods. ProjectorCentral says it measures real-world brightness, color accuracy and input lag. Those descriptions help explain what each publication’s conclusions represent; they do not establish a single shared comparison across every projector in this shortlist.
