Consider Revelations if you want its extra campaign and combat, or if you plan to play Slaughter Mode: reports say that mode requires the DLC. If you only want the original campaign, the Standard Edition is the simpler choice. Revelations launched on July 7, 2026; Slaughter Mode was announced for November 2026, with no exact release day confirmed as of October 4, 2026. These are purchase recommendations based on announced content, not a hands-on review.
What does Revelations add?
Revelations is a campaign expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages. Bethesda’s July 7, 2026 news listing describes it alongside Ripatorium 3.0, quality-of-life changes and bug fixes in Update 4. Bethesda’s Revelations news index confirms the expansion’s release date and update listing.

A new campaign and Chain Spear
In a July 1, 2026 preview, Xbox Wire described an estimated 10–12 hours of content, with the estimate attributed to Game Director Hugo Martin. It is a pre-release estimate, not a guaranteed completion time or an independently timed result. The preview characterized the expansion as roughly 60% story campaign and 40% endgame content.
The expansion introduces the Chain Spear, which replaces the shield at the start of its campaign. The preview describes multiple attack types and movement options, including a grapple-like pull; players can later swap back to the shield. It also outlines a hub, secrets, challenges, puzzles, an uber boss, master arenas and new Ripatorium content. Existing difficulty sliders remain available, according to the preview. These details are from Xbox Wire’s preview and reported developer statements, not independent playtesting. Read the Xbox Wire preview.

Does Slaughter Mode require Revelations?
Contemporary reporting says yes: Slaughter Mode is planned as a free update for Revelations owners, and requires ownership of the expansion. It is described as an endless single-player challenge with escalating demon waves across multiple arenas, personal round or score records, cosmetic unlocks and weekly challenges. The reported target is November 2026; no exact day had been confirmed by October 4, 2026. TrueAchievements’ October 2 report covers the announcement. A Reddit post reproducing details from the stream offers secondary corroboration.
Bethesda’s official buy page confirms Revelations as DLC and says the base game is required, but the page reviewed does not mention Slaughter Mode. Treat the mode’s access requirement and timing as announced plans reported by those outlets, rather than as details confirmed on that official page. Check current announcements before buying solely for the mode.

How to decide based on what you want to play
Buy or add Revelations if its content appeals
- You want another story campaign and the Chain Spear combat system.
- You value additional arenas, endgame activities or Ripatorium content.
- You plan to play Slaughter Mode, subject to the reported Revelations ownership requirement and the announced November timing.
Choose the base game alone if you are unsure
If your priority is only the original campaign, start with the Standard Edition or the base game you already own. You can decide about Revelations later; compare the separate DLC and upgrade entitlements on your platform rather than paying for content you may not use.
