DeepSeek’s consumer privacy policy, last updated February 10, 2026, describes several categories of information it may collect:

The consumer policy says DeepSeek uses personal data to improve and develop its services and to train and improve technology, including machine-learning models and algorithms. That is the company’s stated purpose; it does not establish that every conversation is used to train a model, or how a particular user’s content was used.

Does DeepSeek send or store data in China?
Yes, according to the consumer privacy policy: “To provide you with our services, we directly collect, process and store your Personal Data in People’s Republic of China.” The policy also says data may be stored on a server outside your country and that safeguards will be used where required by applicable law. This is DeepSeek’s disclosure about its practices, not an independent measurement of network traffic or storage locations.

How secure is DeepSeek?
DeepSeek says it maintains “commercially reasonable technical, administrative, and physical security measures” designed to protect personal data and regularly reviews them. Its policy also warns that internet or email transmission is never fully secure or error free. These are company statements; the available material does not provide an independent, current audit of the consumer service’s security controls.

How long does DeepSeek keep information?
The policy says retention depends on factors such as the amount and type of information, its sensitivity and purpose, and legal requirements. It gives account, input, and payment personal data kept while an account exists as an example, while also allowing retention for legal obligations, legitimate business interests, and claims. It does not set one fixed deletion deadline that applies to all information.

Is DeepSeek safe for sensitive or work information?
DeepSeek says its services are not designed or intended to process sensitive personal data and tells users not to provide it. As a practical precaution, do not enter passwords, authentication secrets, confidential workplace documents, customer records, or sensitive personal information unless you have checked the relevant service terms and your organization’s rules.
Does the consumer policy cover apps built with the DeepSeek API?
No. DeepSeek’s consumer policy says it does not cover processing by downstream systems or applications developed by other developers using Open Platform services. The Open Platform terms place responsibilities on developers serving the public, including explaining their personal-information processing rules, having consent or another legal basis, handling rights requests, and establishing organizational and technical security measures. What changes when using DeepSeek Harness with a custom model?
DeepSeek Harness has a separate policy, last updated September 20, 2026. It distinguishes official model services from custom-model use. In custom-model mode, the user configures another large-model API, inputs go directly to that model provider, and the provider’s policy governs that processing. DeepSeek Harness says it does not store or process the input and output on its server in that scenario. This description applies to Harness custom-model mode, not automatically to the consumer chatbot or official DeepSeek model services.

Have governments restricted DeepSeek?
Several reported actions were specific to particular jurisdictions and dates. They do not establish a universal ban, prove a security breach, or confirm current availability everywhere.

- Keep sensitive personal, account, and workplace information out of prompts and uploads unless you have verified that the service and its use are permitted for that information.
- If a government or employer restriction may apply, check current rules for your location or organization rather than relying on reports of past actions elsewhere.
