Explain that AI can alter an ordinary photo to make a fake sexual image, and that even a fabricated image can cause real harm. The child whose image or identity was used is not responsible for someone else’s choice to create or share it.
What are AI-generated sexual images?
UNICEF defines deepfakes as images, videos, or audio generated or manipulated with AI to look real. “Nudification” refers to using AI tools to alter clothing in a photograph to fabricate a nude or sexualized image. These images may be fake, but the impact on the person depicted is real.

UNICEF states: “When a child’s image or identity is used, that child is directly victimised.” The child does not have to have posed for or made an explicit image for their identity to be used against them.

How to start the conversation
Choose a calm moment and use simple, age-appropriate language. You do not need to know every technical detail; focus on what the child saw or experienced and on making it safe for them to tell you.

- Open gently: “I want you to know you can tell me if you see something upsetting or if someone uses your photo. You won’t be in trouble for asking for help.”
- Invite them to explain in their own words: “What happened?” or “What are you worried about?” Listen without interrupting or pressing for details they are not ready to share.
- Make clear that a fake image can still hurt someone, and that responsibility belongs to the person who made or shared it—not the child depicted.
- Ask what would help them feel safer right now, and identify a trusted adult they can approach if they do not want to talk with you.
There is no single conversation script established for every age. Adapt your words to the child’s understanding, and let them guide how much they want to discuss.
If your child has seen or been targeted by an image
Pause and listen before reacting
Take a moment to collect yourself before responding. Australian eSafety Commissioner guidance advises caregivers to avoid reactions that could make a child feel ashamed or punished. Thank them for telling you, listen to what they say, and reassure them that you will help.

Work out what support is needed
Ask whether the image is being shared, whether the child feels unsafe, and whether there is an adult or setting involved that can help. Avoid blaming questions such as why they took or shared a photograph. Keep the conversation centered on the conduct of the person who created or distributed the image and on the child’s immediate support.

If the image or sharing occurred at school, a sports club, or another organized setting, consider notifying an appropriate staff member or responsible adult so they can assess the situation and review safety measures. Choose someone who can respond supportively and protect the child’s privacy.

What schools and caregivers can do
UNICEF recommends informing and supporting caregivers, teaching students about deepfakes and nudification risks, encouraging reporting, and training educators to respond. Traditional online-safety prevention remains useful, but it cannot by itself address sexual content fabricated with AI. Children should know how to ask for help even when no real explicit photograph was taken.
UNICEF reported that at least 1.2 million children across an 11-country study disclosed that images of them had been manipulated into sexually explicit deepfakes in the preceding year. This was a UNICEF, ECPAT and INTERPOL finding based on nationally representative household surveys of internet-using children aged 12–17, with estimates modeled using population and internet-use data; it is not a direct count or a universal prevalence rate.
