The genuine process usually runs from C:WindowsSystem32csrss.exe under the SYSTEM account. Leave that copy running: deleting or terminating it can destabilize Windows.
Malware can imitate the filename, so a second process or a familiar name is not enough to prove safety. Check the executable’s location, signature, account context and scan results before deciding what to do. Never manually delete a copy in the Windows system directory.

What csrss.exe does in Windows
Microsoft describes the Client/Server Runtime Subsystem as the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem; Win32.sys is the kernel-mode portion. The executable that provides this function is csrss.exe. Windows starts it as part of the operating system, not as an optional application that you can uninstall.

Because it is a core process, Windows may rely on it for ordinary sessions and system activity. Stopping the legitimate instance can cause instability, force a sign-out or shutdown, or leave Windows unable to continue normally. A process named csrss.exe therefore should not be judged by its name alone, and it should not be ended simply because it appears in Task Manager.

When csrss.exe is legitimate
Use several indicators together. The expected characteristics are:
| Check | What normally fits the Windows copy | What deserves investigation |
|---|---|---|
| File location | C:WindowsSystem32csrss.exe |
An executable in an application-data, temporary, download or other user-writable folder |
| Account context | The SYSTEM account | Your personal account or another unexpected account |
| Publisher/signature | A valid Microsoft digital signature on the file | Missing, invalid or unexpected publisher information |
| Behavior | Runs as a Windows system process without unexplained extras | Unusual network activity, persistence changes or security-alert activity |
| Security scan | Trusted scans report no threat | Defender or another trusted scanner identifies the file as malicious |
The Windows folder is not required to be on the C: drive in every installation. Managed deployments can use a different system-root drive letter, so compare the path with the actual Windows directory on that computer. What matters is that the file is in the operating system’s System32 directory, not merely that the name looks correct.
Why two or more csrss.exe entries can be normal
Windows can create separate Client/Server Runtime processes for different sessions. As a result, more than one entry in Task Manager is not, by itself, evidence of malware. There is no single number that is guaranteed to be normal across every Windows version, configuration or session arrangement.

When you see multiple entries, compare each one rather than counting them. Open the file location for each process, check the account and signature, and run a trusted scan. A copy in the correct system directory with the expected account and signature is materially different from a same-named executable in a user profile directory.
How to verify a csrss.exe process manually
1. Find the process in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, choose More details.
- On the Processes tab, look for Client Server Runtime Process. Do not rely solely on a spelling match for
csrss.exe; Windows displays the friendly process name here. - Right-click the entry and choose Open file location. Repeat this for each entry if more than one is listed.
2. Confirm the directory
In File Explorer, inspect the highlighted executable’s full path. A normal installation places it at C:WindowsSystem32csrss.exe, or the equivalent System32 path beneath the actual Windows directory if the system uses another drive letter. A path such as an application-data folder, a temporary folder or a downloads folder is not the expected location and should be treated as suspicious until a scan clears it.
3. Check properties and the digital signature
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Details tab for consistent file information and the Digital Signatures tab for a valid Microsoft signature.
- Open the signature details and verify that Windows reports the signature as valid. An unexpected publisher, an invalid signature or a missing signature increases the need for a security scan.
A signature check is one piece of evidence, not a substitute for the path and scan results. Malware can copy names and attempt to imitate system files, so treat conflicting indicators seriously.

4. Check the account context
In Task Manager’s details view, inspect the user or account associated with the process. The genuine system process normally runs as SYSTEM. An executable running under an unexpected user account, especially when it is also outside System32, warrants investigation.
Scan before taking any removal action
If the path, signature or account does not match, do not delete the file from File Explorer. First preserve the evidence long enough to scan it, then let a trusted security utility quarantine or remove anything it identifies.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and click Scan now.
- Allow the scan to finish. Review the result and follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal action if it identifies the suspicious executable.
Windows Security’s Defender Antivirus scans files and processes that are opened or downloaded and provides controls for detected threats. A clean result does not make an incorrect path automatically legitimate; retain the location and signature checks as part of the decision.

Use Microsoft Safety Scanner when a deeper second check is needed
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a separate on-demand malware-detection utility. Obtain the current release from Microsoft, run it, and choose a scan that covers the drives where the suspicious file was found. It is useful when a regular scan did not resolve the concern or when you want an additional Microsoft scan of a running installation. Follow the utility’s report rather than deleting files by hand.
Use Windows Defender Offline if normal Windows cleanup fails
- In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection and then Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now.
- Save open work. Windows will restart and scan outside the normal running session, then restart again when the check is complete.
- After signing back in, return to Protection history to review the action taken.
Offline scanning is the appropriate branch when malware may interfere with cleanup while Windows is running, or when a suspicious copy keeps returning after a normal scan. It can inspect the installation before the usual user-session processes load.

What a fake csrss.exe can look like
Malware authors can choose a trusted filename to make a process appear ordinary. Microsoft’s threat documentation describes TrojanDownloader:Win32/Recslurp.D creating c:documents and settingsadministratorapplication datacsrss.exe, adding a firewall authorization and contacting a remote host. The important lesson is not the specific threat’s age or name; it is that a same-named executable outside the Windows system directory can be part of a larger malicious installation.

- Wrong directory: The file is outside the operating system’s
System32folder. - Unexpected account: The process runs as a normal user when the system copy normally runs as SYSTEM.
- Signature problem: The publisher is not Microsoft or Windows reports that the signature is invalid.
- Security changes: The file adds a firewall authorization or other persistence without your approval.
- Network behavior: A supposedly system-identical copy contacts an unfamiliar remote host.
- Scanner detection: Windows Security, Safety Scanner or Offline scanning identifies the file.
One warning sign is enough to start an investigation, but no single sign proves the file is malicious. Base the final action on the complete set of observations and the result from a trusted scanner.
Should you remove or terminate csrss.exe?
Do not terminate the legitimate process
Do not use Task Manager’s End task command on the copy located in the Windows system directory. It is a required operating-system process, and stopping it can make Windows unstable. Do not rename, move or replace it manually either.
Do not manually delete a System32 copy
Even if the process appears to use resources or there are multiple entries, manual deletion can damage Windows. If scans report no threat and the path, account and signature are consistent, leave the file alone. If a trusted security tool identifies malware, allow that tool to quarantine or remove the malicious item and restart when requested.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemove only what a trusted tool identifies
For a suspicious copy outside the system directory, record its path and scan result. Quarantine is safer than dragging the file to the Recycle Bin because it allows the security product to isolate the file and, where supported, restore it if a detection is corrected. If the scanner reports related startup entries, firewall changes or additional files, follow its complete remediation report rather than deleting only the visible executable.
Choosing the right scan for your situation
| Option | When to use it | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Defender Full scan | Windows starts normally and you want a comprehensive first check | Scans from the running Windows Security environment and offers quarantine or removal actions |
| Microsoft Safety Scanner | You want a separate Microsoft on-demand check or normal cleanup did not settle the issue | Runs an additional malware scan using the current utility obtained from Microsoft |
| Defender Offline | Malware may interfere with normal-mode cleanup or the suspicious file returns | Restarts the PC and scans before the usual Windows session loads |
If the warning remains after scanning
Keep the exact path, account, signature status and scanner detection name. Those details distinguish a genuine system process from a masquerading file and help Microsoft support or a qualified technician understand the case. If Windows becomes unstable after a security tool removes a file, use the tool’s quarantine history or restore option rather than downloading a replacement csrss.exe from an unrelated website.
Do not assume that a second entry, a familiar filename or a temporary spike in activity is enough to justify removal. The reliable decision is evidence-based: system-directory location, expected SYSTEM account, valid Microsoft signature and clean results from trusted scans point to the legitimate process; a conflicting location or detection calls for quarantine through the security tool.
