CompTIA A+ is most worth considering if you are aiming for entry-level computer user support or help-desk work and need a structured way to demonstrate basic IT knowledge. It is not a universal job requirement, and earning it does not guarantee employment or a pay increase. Before paying for two exams and preparation, check whether A+ appears in the job postings you want, what experience you can already show, and whether an employer or training program can cover the cost.
What does A+ help you demonstrate?
Computer user support specialists—often called help-desk technicians—help non-IT users resolve technical problems. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes work such as diagnosing issues, documenting problems, guiding users through solutions, setting up or repairing equipment, and installing or training users on hardware and software. Those duties make A+ most relevant when your goal is first-line support and you want a structured credential to signal baseline knowledge.

That signal is only one part of an application. Practical troubleshooting experience, communication skills, and the ability to explain how you solved a problem can also matter. If you already have relevant hands-on experience, compare the credential’s cost with the value of presenting that experience clearly in a résumé, portfolio, or interview.
Is A+ required for a help-desk job?
No single requirement applies to every support role. The BLS says, “Entry requirements vary for computer support specialists.” It notes that some user support specialists complete college courses, while some candidates may qualify with a high school diploma plus relevant IT certifications. Other jobs may ask for college coursework or a degree, and some employers require product-specific certifications. The BLS does not identify A+ as a universal requirement.

Check a sample of current postings in the location and type of workplace you are targeting. Note how often employers ask for A+, another credential, a degree, prior experience, or particular technical skills. That local evidence is more useful for your decision than assuming every help-desk employer values the same qualification.
What does the labor-market outlook say?
U.S. BLS figures offer context about support occupations, not a forecast of what A+ holders will earn or how likely they are to get hired. For May 2025, the median annual wage was $61,860 for computer user support specialists and $76,220 for computer network support specialists. These are occupational medians, not A+-holder salaries or estimates of a certification wage premium; pay varies with geography, experience, employer, and role.

The BLS projects overall U.S. computer support specialist employment to decline 3% from 2025 to 2035, while estimating about 48,700 openings per year on average over that period. It expects many openings to come from workers transferring to other occupations or leaving the labor force. That combination is a mixed outlook for the occupation, not evidence that A+ itself causes or prevents job opportunities.
How should you decide whether the cost is justified?
Assess the credential against your intended job, current skills, and out-of-pocket cost. A+ is a stronger candidate when it appears repeatedly in relevant postings, you lack another convincing way to show foundational knowledge, and the expense is manageable or covered by someone else. It is less compelling if target employers emphasize experience or a different qualification, or if you are relying on the certification alone to secure a job or a raise.

- Skills you already have: Consider whether you can demonstrate troubleshooting through work, volunteer experience, coursework, or personal projects.

How do you check that study materials match the exams?
Confirm the exam codes and version before paying for a book or course. CompTIA’s official Core 2 (220-1202) objectives document is titled “CompTIA A+ Core 2 (220-1202) Certification Exam: Exam Objectives, Version 2.0” and carries a 2024 copyright. It is a useful outline for that Core 2 exam only; it does not establish the current Core 1 objectives, pricing, exam availability, or employment outcomes.
Use the current official objectives for both exams as your preparation checklist, and verify their codes, versions, price, retake terms, and renewal requirements on CompTIA’s current certification information before committing. The Core 2 PDF alone is not a complete study outline for both exams. If you choose a paid guide or course, check that it explicitly covers both current exam codes rather than relying on a title that may refer to an older version.

- Choose a target role and location. Gather several current postings for the kind of support job you want.
- Compare what employers ask for. Record mentions of A+, other credentials, education, experience, and specific skills.
- Check your evidence gap. Decide whether the credential would add a useful signal beyond skills and experience you can already demonstrate.
- Confirm the current commitment. Check CompTIA’s current exam details and calculate the cost of both exams, preparation, and a possible retake.
- Make the decision based on fit and funding. Proceed if the credential addresses a real gap at a cost you can justify; otherwise, build relevant experience or pursue the qualification your target employers actually request.
