Best Website Builders for Artists: Choose One for Your Portfolio or Store

The best website builder for an artist depends on what the site needs to do. Choose Squarespace for a polished portfolio, Shopify for a store built around artwork and inventory, Wix for a flexible site that also sells, or Format when client proofing and file delivery matter. Adobe Portfolio may be economical if your Creative Cloud plan already includes it. There is no single best choice for every artist.

How to choose a website builder for your art

Start with the site’s main job, then compare the plans that actually provide the features you need. A portfolio is mainly about presenting work clearly and helping visitors navigate it. A store has additional needs: product listings, checkout, inventory, and the way you handle orders. If you take commissions, client review and file delivery may matter more than either a generic portfolio template or a large catalog.

  • Portfolio first: prioritize image presentation, organization, and ease of updating work.
  • Sales first: prioritize the store workflow, inventory needs, eligible ecommerce plan, and transaction costs.
  • Commission or client work: check whether proofing and file delivery are part of the workflow.
  • More design control: weigh customization against setup and ongoing maintenance.
  • Already pay for creative software: check whether a portfolio tool is included before buying another subscription.

Features and plan limits change. Confirm current eligibility, fees, and pricing on the provider’s own site before subscribing.

Which builder fits each artist’s needs?

Builder Best fit What to weigh
Squarespace Artists focused on visual portfolio presentation, with the option to sell Confirm which plan supports the commerce features you need and account for transaction costs.
Shopify Artists whose main goal is selling work, especially with inventory to manage Choose it for a store-led workflow rather than assuming it is the best portfolio choice.
Wix Artists who want flexibility and a portfolio that may also sell Ecommerce requires an eligible upgraded plan; check current plan restrictions.
Format Artists handling commissions or other client-reviewed work Its stated distinction is support for client proofing and file delivery; check whether those features suit your workflow.
Adobe Portfolio Artists who already subscribe to Creative Cloud Squarespace’s guide says it is included with most Creative Cloud plans. Verify that your specific subscription includes it.
Pixpa Artists considering a portfolio and print-sales workflow Pixpa’s own comparison describes a no-code editor, a zero-commission store, and print-lab integration. Treat these as vendor feature claims and verify current terms.
WordPress with Elementor Artists who want more control or a complex site Greater control brings setup responsibility; a current total-cost calculation is not established here.
Webflow Artists seeking detailed control over site design and behavior Squarespace characterizes Webflow as offering more control over layout, animation, and responsive behavior. That description comes from a competitor, so assess the platform directly.
Big Cartel Independent sellers seeking a simple storefront A comparison describes it as a low-cost option, but current pricing and limits need verification before purchase.

These are use-case matches, not results from a common hands-on test. The available material does not establish a verifiable testing method for a ten-builder ranking, so the comparison is based on reported positioning and features rather than a claim that the platforms were tested under identical conditions.

Portfolio presentation versus selling art

If the portfolio is the priority

Compare how naturally each builder lets you group and present work, how visitors move between projects, and how quickly you can update the site. Squarespace is positioned as a visually strong portfolio option. Wix is another candidate if you want flexibility and may add basic selling. For a portfolio tied to client projects, consider whether Format’s proofing and delivery workflow is useful.

If selling is the priority

Shopify is the clearest fit among these choices when the site is primarily a dedicated art store or inventory management is central. Squarespace and Wix are candidates when the portfolio remains important and selling is an additional function. Do not assume that two builders’ ecommerce features are equivalent: verify the required plan, transaction fees, and the specific selling workflow before committing.

If you sell prints

Pixpa’s 2026 vendor-authored comparison reports print-lab integration and a zero-commission store. Those claims may be relevant if you sell reproductions, but confirm what integrations are currently supported and what other payment or subscription charges apply.

Consider client workflow and design control

Commissions and client review

For commissioned work, a site may need to do more than display finished pieces. Format is described as supporting client proofing and file delivery, which could reduce friction when clients need to review work or receive files. Confirm the exact features and how they fit your process before choosing it on that basis.

Customization and maintenance

WordPress with Elementor and Webflow are options to consider when the site needs more control or complexity. More control can also mean more setup and responsibility. The available comparisons do not establish a current, apples-to-apples total cost for WordPress with Elementor, so include any costs and maintenance requirements relevant to your own setup in the decision.

Check subscriptions and prices before deciding

An existing subscription can change the value calculation. Squarespace’s portfolio guide says Adobe Portfolio is included with most Creative Cloud plans, but inclusion depends on the specific plan; verify your bundle before treating it as an included option.

A practical shortlist

  1. Decide the main job. Choose portfolio presentation, store operations, client workflow, or design control as the primary requirement.
  2. Pick two or three candidates from the comparison. For example, compare Squarespace and Wix for a portfolio that also sells, or Shopify against a portfolio-first option if sales dominate.
  3. Check the exact plan. Confirm ecommerce eligibility, proofing or delivery features, and any limits that affect how you work.
  4. Calculate the recurring cost. Include billing frequency and transaction fees rather than comparing headline subscription prices alone.
  5. Account for what you already have. Verify whether a current Creative Cloud subscription includes Adobe Portfolio before adding another paid service.
  6. Choose the simplest option that meets the real need. Extra design control or store features are only valuable if they solve a problem your site actually has.
