Its shares trade on the NYSE under OWL. Blue Owl also sponsors or manages separate investment vehicles—including business development companies (BDCs) and a real estate investment trust (REIT)—but those entities are not the same company as the listed parent.
What is Blue Owl Capital?
Blue Owl Capital Inc. is the publicly traded parent and asset manager. The company describes its business as three platforms: Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange as OWL. Blue Owl’s shareholder overview reported $319 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2026, and approximately 1,380 professionals globally as of the overview accessed October 4, 2026. Those are company-reported, dated figures; AUM is not the same as assets owned on the company’s balance sheet.

The platforms have different histories: Blue Owl traces Credit to Owl Rock, GP Strategic Capital to Dyal Capital, and Real Assets to Oak Street. The company says it began trading on the NYSE in 2021. Blue Owl’s company history provides the firm’s account of those origins.
Is OWL a BDC?
No. OWL is the ticker for Blue Owl Capital Inc., the asset manager. A BDC is a separate investment-company structure used by some Blue Owl lending businesses. The distinction matters: buying OWL shares is not the same as buying shares in one of those BDCs.

Example: Blue Owl Capital Corporation (OBDC)
Blue Owl Capital Corporation is a separate specialty-finance company focused on lending to U.S. middle-market companies. It has elected regulation as a BDC and trades on the NYSE as OBDC. It is externally managed by an adviser affiliated with Blue Owl Capital Inc., rather than being the parent company itself. Blue Owl’s February 18, 2026 release identifies the company as a BDC and describes the affiliated-adviser relationship.
Other Blue Owl BDCs
Blue Owl’s product lineup includes more than one BDC, and not every BDC it sponsors is publicly traded. Company materials identify Blue Owl Capital Corporation III as OBDE and publicly traded, while also distinguishing non-traded BDCs. The OBDE classification is shown in Blue Owl’s 3Q24 BDC materials; because that document dates to November 2024, check current company materials before relying on its listing status for a transaction.

Is Blue Owl Capital a REIT?
No. The listed parent OWL is an asset manager, not a REIT. Blue Owl’s broader product ecosystem does include real-estate vehicles: its investor portal lists Blue Owl Real Estate Net Lease Trust among its REIT and BDC offerings. That association does not make the trust—or the parent—interchangeable with the other. The portal confirms the trust’s place in the product lineup, but does not establish an exchange ticker or public listing for it.
OWL vs. OBDC: what is the difference?
| Entity | Role | Focus or relationship | Identifier and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Owl Capital Inc. | Listed parent and asset manager | Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital platforms | NYSE: OWL |
| Blue Owl Capital Corporation | Separate specialty-finance company and BDC | Lends to U.S. middle-market companies; externally managed by an adviser affiliated with Blue Owl Capital Inc. | NYSE: OBDC |
| Blue Owl Capital Corporation III | Separate BDC | Blue Owl materials identify it as publicly traded | NYSE: OBDE in 3Q24 materials; verify current status |
| Blue Owl Real Estate Net Lease Trust | REIT vehicle in Blue Owl’s product lineup | Listed on Blue Owl’s investor portal | Ticker and exchange listing not established by the cited portal |
The practical rule is to identify the exact entity before looking up a ticker, trading status, or investor-access terms. A parent-company stock symbol does not apply automatically to a fund or vehicle managed or sponsored by the parent. Blue Owl’s materials distinguish publicly traded from non-traded products, so access differs by vehicle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Blue Owl’s AUM and business goal do—and do not—tell you
Blue Owl’s reported $319 billion AUM is a measure of assets under management across its three platforms as of June 30, 2026. It does not mean Blue Owl Capital Inc. owns that amount on its balance sheet, nor does it by itself describe the returns or risk of OWL shares or any individual vehicle.
On its About Us page, Co-CEO Doug Ostrover states: “Our goal is pretty simple. Let’s try to offer investors some of the best risk-adjusted returns they can find in the marketplace.” That is the executive’s stated goal, not evidence of achieved returns or a recommendation of a particular security.
