Is Bitcoin Kidding Itself About the Lightning Network?

Lightning expands Bitcoin’s payment options, but public capacity and selected integrations are not proof of broad, reliable everyday use.

Not about the technology—but possibly about what it proves. Lightning can move Bitcoin payments through off-chain channels, with Bitcoin’s base layer available to open and settle those channels. That can expand payment capacity. But technical capability, visible channel funds and selected business integrations are not proof that ordinary payments are broadly adopted, consistently reliable or effortless.

What Lightning does—and what it changes

Bitcoin’s base layer records transactions on the blockchain. Lightning works differently: participants fund a payment channel with a Bitcoin transaction, then exchange updates to their balances off-chain rather than recording every payment on the blockchain. When a channel closes, its latest state can be settled on-chain. Payments can also route through a series of channels between people who do not share a direct channel.

The Lightning Network’s official overview describes it as a decentralized network that uses smart-contract functionality to enable payments across participants. The project documentation explains the channel model: scripts and timelocks help enforce settlement, while routine channel payments happen off-chain.

That distinction matters. Lightning’s potential advantage is that every payment need not become a base-layer transaction; it is not that Bitcoin’s blockchain suddenly processes every Lightning payment. Channel opening, closing and enforcement still depend on the base layer. The network’s theoretical capacity claims should not be mistaken for measured, real-world throughput.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Is Lightning actually being used?

There is evidence of business interest, but not a complete measure of everyday use. In a report dated February 19, 2025, Fidelity Digital Assets said more businesses integrated Lightning in 2024 than in prior years and described the network as developing beyond peer-to-peer payments. Fidelity’s assessment combines public metrics with proprietary data supplied by Voltage, so it is evidence of ecosystem activity—not a census of merchants, Bitcoin users or successful retail payments. See Fidelity’s report summary.

A different kind of evidence appears in a U.S. Bitcoin Trust annual filing published in 2026. Describing conditions as of December 31, 2025, the filing said wallets and intermediaries supporting Lightning-like technologies had not seen wide-scale use. That is a risk disclosure, not a purpose-built adoption survey. It does not establish that nobody uses Lightning; it does show why selected integrations and claims of growth should not be treated as proof of broad, repeatable use. The two sources measure and characterize different things, so their conclusions do not cancel each other out. The filing is available from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Why public capacity is not an adoption count

Fidelity’s full report estimated that publicly visible Lightning channels held 5,358.50 BTC as of January 2025. That figure represents public channel capacity, not the number or value of payments made. Fidelity notes that private or unannounced channels are excluded and that total capacity is unknown; its full report PDF provides the estimate and caveat.

Capacity alone cannot show how often funds move, whether payments are retail purchases, what share of attempted payments succeeds, or how evenly usable liquidity is distributed. Nor should BTC capacity figures be compared across dates as if their dollar value were fixed: Bitcoin’s price changes over time.

Are Lightning payments reliable and cheap?

Reliability depends on the payment path

Routing requires a usable path through connected channels. A 2020 working paper by Finnegan Waugh and Ralph Holz found an inverse relationship between payment volume and success in its study and reported that, under the studied conditions, at best about one third of destination nodes were reachable. The authors also discussed stale network information and trade-offs involving reliability, privacy and decentralization. This is a historical result, not a current Lightning success rate; the available sources do not establish a present-day rate. Read the 2020 working paper.

Layer and fee figures are not interchangeable

The 2026 trust filing put Bitcoin’s base-layer throughput at approximately five transactions per second as of December 31, 2025. It reported daily average on-chain fees ranging from $0.31 per transaction on December 7, 2025, to $124.17 on April 20, 2024, and an average daily fee of $0.65 on December 31, 2025. These are base-layer figures, not a Lightning fee comparison.

A Lightning payment’s experience can depend on routing, liquidity, wallet design, channel setup and whether a service provider is involved. Opening and closing channels also engage the base layer. The cited sources do not provide a current, apples-to-apples benchmark for Lightning fees or payment success, so neither “every Lightning payment is cheaper” nor “channel management is free” is established.

Lightning versus an on-chain Bitcoin payment

Question Lightning On-chain Bitcoin
Where is the payment recorded? Channel balances update off-chain; opening, closing and enforcement use Bitcoin transactions. The transaction is recorded on Bitcoin’s base layer.
What can affect the payment cost? Routing, liquidity, channel management, wallet design and service-provider choices. Variable base-layer transaction fees; the trust filing reports that they can fluctuate widely.
What can affect reliability? Whether the wallet can find a usable route with sufficient liquidity; the available sources do not establish a current success rate. Base-layer confirmation and fee conditions; the sources do not establish a universal payment-time or cost comparison.
What does the evidence establish? Public capacity and selected integration evidence, but not a comprehensive count of everyday successful payments. Base-layer throughput and fee observations cited in the trust filing, not a comparison of total payment utility.

There is no universal winner on these facts. The useful choice depends on the payment, the wallet and route available, the user’s comfort with channel setup and the need for an on-chain record. The sources here do not support ranking Lightning against other Bitcoin layers or card networks.

So, is Bitcoin kidding itself?

Bitcoin is not kidding itself if it sees Lightning as a way to move some activity off-chain while retaining Bitcoin settlement and enforcement. The evidence also supports real technical development and business integrations. The overreach would be to treat those facts—or a public capacity number—as proof that Lightning has already become a widely used, dependable everyday payment network. A 2026 filing’s statement that use had not reached wide scale by the end of 2025 is a caution, not the final word on future adoption.

Blockstream’s Q1 2026 update described an app experience pairing its Jade hardware wallet with hardware-wallet-secured Lightning payments. That is an example of an integration, not evidence that all hardware wallets support Lightning or that the broader user experience is solved. Compatibility depends on the wallet and app; check current support before choosing a device. See Blockstream’s Q1 2026 update.
