Asyar is a free, open-source desktop launcher for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It combines app search and keyboard shortcuts with tools such as a calculator, clipboard history, snippets, file search, extensions, and window management. It may suit you if you want a keyboard-driven launcher across operating systems, but support differs by platform, and switching from Raycast does not transfer everything.
What Asyar does
Asyar is installed desktop software, not a physical product. Its project describes it as a launcher that opens from a global hotkey and provides a searchable interface for commands and productivity tools. The feature list includes:

Which operating systems are supported?
Asyar’s repository identifies macOS, Windows 11, and Debian as tested platforms. It also describes Windows 10 as supported out of the box and other Linux X11 environments as supported. Those statements are the project’s support descriptions; they do not establish identical behavior across all versions, distributions, or desktop environments.

Linux: check whether you use Wayland or X11
The project warns that global input-heavy features, including snippets, are limited on Linux Wayland. It suggests an Xorg/X11 session for workflows that rely on those features. If you use Linux, distinguish the desktop session from the distribution name when checking whether a feature will work.
macOS: Accessibility permission affects text features
Asyar’s getting-started guide says text expansion and capturing selected text require macOS Accessibility access. Without that permission, text expansion will not work. The permission is part of setup, not an optional performance tweak.

How to install and set up Asyar
Asyar’s official getting-started guide describes downloading the latest release from asyar.org and running the installer. Release pages and download routes can change, so use the project’s current instructions rather than an old installer link.

- On macOS, open the DMG, move Asyar to Applications, and open it. Because the app is not distributed through the Mac App Store, macOS may show a security prompt.
- During onboarding, choose a global hotkey and theme.
- On macOS, grant Accessibility access if you want text expansion or selected-text capture.
- On Windows or Linux, use the installer or manual release download provided by the project for your system. The repository also lists a Homebrew cask route for macOS.
If a feature does not work after installation, first check whether it depends on a platform permission or Linux session type; an unavailable OS-level capability will not necessarily be fixed by changing Asyar’s hotkey.

What transfers when you switch from Raycast?
Asyar’s onboarding describes importing Raycast snippets, quicklinks, and app hotkeys. That makes migration useful for common personal shortcuts, but it is selective rather than a full settings or extension migration.
Asyar’s troubleshooting material says Raycast built-in command hotkeys—including Clipboard History, Dictionary, and File Search—and third-party extension hotkeys have no Asyar equivalent for import. Plan to recreate or replace those workflows manually where Asyar offers a suitable feature. Do not assume Raycast extensions, preferences, or every command will carry over.

Privacy, licensing, and security claims
Asyar describes itself as local-first. In its migration documentation, the project says snippets, clipboard history, and credentials are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, with keys held in operating-system keychain facilities. These are statements from the project, not the findings of an independent security audit.

Local-first should not be read as a guarantee that every use stays on your device. Optional AI providers or integrations may process data externally; review their data handling and Asyar’s current settings before sending sensitive information.

License terms depend on the component: the core application, asyar-launcher, is GPL-3.0 licensed, while asyar-sdk and asyar-ext-builder are MIT licensed. Calling the entire application MIT-licensed would be inaccurate.
How much weight should you give the performance comparison?
Asyar’s repository publishes a black-box macOS comparison of Asyar 0.1.1-49 and Raycast 2.6.2.0. In its hotkey-to-window-visible test, the project reports a median of 13.9 ms for Asyar and 22.2 ms for Raycast across 15 runs; it also reports p95 results of 17.3 ms and 32.0 ms, respectively, and p99 results of 20.5 ms and 32.5 ms. These are project-published results, not independently reproduced measurements or a guarantee for another computer.
The repository’s benchmark README describes a script for black-box measurements on a user’s own Mac, including latency, cold start, memory, idle CPU and wakeups, idle disk writes, and app size. The project says the script can regenerate the comparison table. Treat that as a repository-authored description of its tool, not an independent assessment. Your experience depends on your hardware, setup, and chosen features.

How to decide whether Asyar fits
- Start with your operating system and session: Windows 11, macOS, and Debian are the project’s named tested platforms; on Linux, check whether your input-dependent workflow requires X11 rather than Wayland.
- List the features you actually use: verify each one in the current platform support information, especially if you rely on snippets, integrations, or AI features.
- Account for migration work: snippets, quicklinks, and app hotkeys are documented import targets, but built-in and extension command hotkeys do not transfer as equivalents.
- Review data flows: distinguish locally stored information from data sent to optional AI providers or integrations, and assess project security statements as vendor claims.
- Try it on your own device: a project benchmark on macOS can inform a comparison, but cannot establish how fast it will feel on your machine or on another operating system.
