Separately, 2026 reporting says he wants to strengthen the design organization. That reported plan is a signal of possible change, not proof that Apple has already reorganized or that its products will become more ambitious.
What is confirmed about Apple’s design direction?
Liquid Glass is an announced software design, not a promise of industrial-design change
Apple introduced Liquid Glass on June 9, 2025, describing it as a translucent software-design material intended to bring greater focus to content while retaining familiarity. Apple said it was inspired by visionOS and developed through collaboration between design and engineering. The design was set to extend across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. Apple’s description explains its intent; it does not establish how users received the design or whether it improved Apple’s products. Liquid Glass concerns the look and behavior of software interfaces. It is evidence of a company-wide interface direction, but it is not evidence by itself of a change in hardware design, product-development priorities, or the authority of Apple’s design teams.

Apple announced on April 20, 2026 that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus would become CEO, with the change effective September 1, 2026. The announcement identified Ternus as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering and highlighted his mechanical-engineering background. Apple credited him with work on reliability and durability, materials and hardware design, recycled aluminum, 3-D-printed titanium in Apple Watch Ultra 3, and repairability improvements. Macworld reported in June 2026, summarizing Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s reporting, that Ternus anticipated a major design shake-up, had spent substantial time with Apple’s Industrial Design group, and wanted the team to have a stronger role. The article also relayed internal remarks attributed to employee meetings, including “design is core to what we do.” These are secondhand reports of intentions and comments—not an Apple announcement of a completed reorganization. Does this mean Apple is returning to its design roots?
That phrase is best treated as a question about the company’s future, not a confirmed strategy. The evidence points to continuity and possible change at once: Apple’s software initiative builds on an existing interface-design identity, while reporting suggests Ternus may seek a stronger organizational role for design. A stronger design group could influence what Apple develops, but the available reporting does not establish what products or processes would change, or when.

How to judge whether the push becomes real
Leadership statements and reported intentions are early indicators. A meaningful verdict requires observing what Apple changes and delivers. Four distinctions help separate a design narrative from evidence of a shift:

- Announced direction versus delivered changes: Liquid Glass is an announced software direction. Whether it represents a lasting change depends on what ships and how Apple develops its interfaces over time.
- Software versus industrial design: A new visual language for operating systems does not automatically mean a new approach to the shape, materials, repairability, or function of devices.
- Engineering execution versus design leadership: Ternus’s official record is rooted in hardware engineering and product execution. The reported effort to strengthen the Industrial Design group would be a separate organizational development if it is implemented.
- Continuity versus changed ambition: Apple can preserve recognizable design principles while changing how much influence designers have or how far products depart from established patterns. The cited announcements and reporting do not quantify that change.
What Apple’s scale does—and does not—tell us
Apple’s April 2026 announcement cited more than $416 billion in fiscal-year 2025 revenue and more than 2.5 billion active devices. Those figures show the scale at which any design decision may matter; they are not measures of design quality or evidence that a new design approach is working. The stronger test will be whether Apple’s future products and software show a distinct, sustained change—and whether the company makes the design organization’s role clear.
