Is an Old Office PC Cheaper Than Cloud Streaming for YouTube in India?

An old office PC can cost less if it is already owned, reliable and economical to run. Compare measured electricity and maintenance with the actual cloud bill for the same 30 days.

It depends on what the PC already costs you and whether it can run the stream reliably. An old office PC may be cheaper in cash if it is already owned, needs no significant repairs, can encode your chosen stream, and its electricity cost stays below a comparable cloud service bill. Cloud streaming may be worth more if you value remote operation, recovery and less hands-on maintenance. Compare the same workload across the same 30 days; there is no evidence-based universal winner.

Compare the same 30-day streaming workload

For a fair comparison, define the stream before comparing prices: how many hours it will run, its resolution and frame rate, the video and audio being sent, and how much storage it needs. A 24/7 stream runs for 720 hours in a 30-day month.

Then compare total costs and practical trade-offs, not just a PC’s electricity bill against a cloud provider’s headline rate. StreamNeo’s provider guide also frames the decision around operating costs, though that guidance is not an independent market-price survey.

  • PC: electricity, repairs or replacement parts, any internet cost that is incremental to streaming, and an appropriate share of the purchase price if the computer is not truly a sunk cost.
  • Cloud: the actual 30-day service charge, plus any storage, data transfer or other charges that apply to the service you choose.
  • Either option: setup, monitoring and troubleshooting time. Decide how much that time matters to you rather than treating it as automatically free.

Calculate the PC’s electricity cost

Measure the computer’s input power at the wall if possible, then use:

PC input power in kilowatts × operating hours × local electricity price per kWh = electricity cost

For a 24/7 stream over 30 days, use 720 operating hours. For example, enter your own measured power and the per-kWh rate on your electricity bill; neither a typical PC draw nor a single Indian tariff is established here. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help measure wall draw, but no particular model is required or assessed.

Include repairs and any stream-related increase to your internet bill. If you bought the computer specifically for streaming, or would otherwise sell or use it, consider allocating a fair portion of its cost rather than assuming it is free. An already-owned machine that is serviceable may have a much lower cash cost, but ownership alone does not establish that it is the least-cost option.

Check whether the PC can handle the stream

YouTube’s encoder guidance provides a useful target for comparing setups. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; its guidance also lists 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as recommended for 1080p at 60 fps, and 3 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that an old computer or home internet connection can sustain a stream.

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, at up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For audio it lists AAC or MP3, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Do not infer a minimum CPU or graphics-card model from these settings: they do not prove that every old office PC can encode a particular format. Test the actual machine, encoder configuration, video and connection at the intended quality.

Test the local connection and monitor stream health

YouTube advises choosing a quality your internet connection can reliably support, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health. A speed test alone does not establish that the connection will remain steady during a long stream. Test with the audio and movement you expect to stream, not just a static image. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Local streaming depends on the PC, power and internet connection at the place where it runs. Cloud streaming shifts the encoder and connection off-site, but that does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube stream. Compare what each specific setup does when a process or connection fails, and how much attention restarting it requires.

Do not mistake unrelated cloud prices for a like-for-like quote

The IndiaAI Compute Portal lists GPU services with on-demand and reserved hourly rates. Its surfaced listing for an AMD MI325X.1X shows ₹169.2 per hour on demand and ₹85.5 per hour for a 12-month reserved rate. Those are portal-listed rates for that GPU instance—not a quote for a small CPU-only virtual machine, a managed YouTube streaming service, or an encoder setup. Check current terms, taxes, storage, access conditions and suitability before using any portal rate in your calculation. The portal’s compute services listing and calculator provide context, not a direct price comparison with an old PC.

NIC webcast is also not a general creator’s monthly cloud-streaming option. NIC says its service is for Central and State Government institutions. Its one-day event guidance asks for confirmation of a ₹10,000 advance payment to NICSI and a request at least two working days ahead. That event service is not comparable to an individual creator’s 30-day streaming bill. See NIC webcast availability and NIC webcast service guidance.

Make the decision with your own figures

  1. Write down the planned hours, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and storage needs.
  2. Measure the PC’s wall draw while it is doing the intended encoding work; multiply kilowatts by operating hours and your local per-kWh rate.
  3. Add PC repairs, replacement parts, any incremental internet cost, and an appropriate share of purchase cost if the machine is not truly sunk.
  4. Get the actual cloud or managed-service charge for the same 30-day period. Include storage, data transfer, taxes or other applicable charges.
  5. Compare reliability, restart and recovery needs, and the time you expect to spend setting up and monitoring each option.

A precise rupee winner requires your city or tariff, measured PC draw, the PC’s condition and ownership cost, planned hours, internet plan, target quality, and the cloud service and storage required. Without those inputs, a single number would be guesswork.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
