Save authenticated browser state after a legitimate login, then load that state into a fresh Playwright browser context before navigating to the page you want to capture. Take a viewport screenshot with page.screenshot(), use full_page=True for the full document, or capture one element with locator.screenshot(). Treat the saved state file as a credential: it may contain cookies and headers that can impersonate the account.
Install Playwright and prepare an authorized account
This approach is for pages you are authorized to access and automate, such as your own account or a test account. Authentication depends on the target site: its login fields, redirects, MFA policy, and session lifetime are not universal. Complete the site’s actual login flow rather than relying on a generic selector.

Save login state, then capture the authenticated page
Separate login setup from screenshot capture. First complete the site’s legitimate login flow and save the browser context’s storage state. Later, initialize a new context with that state, verify that the page is logged in, and take the screenshot.

browser.close()The login comment is intentionally site-specific: add the form interactions that match the site’s real login page and MFA requirements. The Playwright authentication guide recommends saving authenticated state and reusing it. A BrowserContext is an isolated browser session; its storage state can initialize another context with recorded login data.
Make login success an explicit check
Do not assume that loading the target URL proves authentication worked. Before capturing, wait for a reliable application-specific marker, such as an account menu, a sign-out link, or a known account URL. If the marker does not appear, fail the run rather than silently saving a login page or an access-denied screen.

Use async when the surrounding program already uses asyncio
For an asynchronous application, the same sequence uses async_playwright and await. Keep the setup and capture contexts separate as in the synchronous version.

Choose the screenshot scope and output
By default, a screenshot captures the current viewport. Choose full-page or element capture when the output needs a different boundary.

PNG is the default format. The screenshot API also provides options for JPEG and WebP, clipping, animation control, masking, and styles; see the Python Page API reference for the options supported by your installed version. Stabilize dynamic content or mask changing regions when repeatable visual output matters.
Protect and maintain the saved authentication state
The state file is sensitive, not ordinary test data. Playwright’s documentation warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Store it privately, restrict access, and do not commit it to Git or share it.

- Save it only for an account you are authorized to automate.
- Keep it out of source control; add the auth-state directory to the project’s ignore rules.
- Regenerate it when the site expires or revokes the session, or when the site’s authentication flow changes.
- Use a dedicated test account when possible, with only the permissions needed for the capture.
Playwright storage state supports cookies and local storage. The Python API also supports including IndexedDB for applications that store authentication tokens there; consult the BrowserContext API for the option and confirm it exists in your installed Playwright version.
When authentication uses sessionStorage
sessionStorage needs separate handling when an application relies on it. Playwright’s authentication guide notes that session storage is domain-specific, is not persisted across page loads, and has no built-in Playwright persistence API. The guide demonstrates saving it with page.evaluate() and restoring it with context.add_init_script(). Follow that approach only if the target application actually stores authentication data there, and keep the extracted data as private as the main state file.
Troubleshoot login and capture failures
- The restored page redirects to login. The saved session may have expired, been revoked, or not been stored where the app keeps authentication. Repeat the login setup and verify the account marker before capturing.
- The account marker times out. The marker may differ for that account, or the page may not have finished loading. Inspect the resulting URL and page state, then choose a stable site-specific signal. Do not remove the check just to make the script pass.
- Login works in setup but not in a new context. Check whether the site depends on IndexedDB or sessionStorage rather than only cookies and local storage. Use the documented storage mechanism and version-supported options.
- Login requires MFA or an interactive challenge. Complete the site’s authorized flow during setup. There is no universal selector or guarantee that a session can be reused indefinitely.
- The screenshot is incomplete or unstable. Confirm the intended scope: viewport is the default, while
full_page=Truecaptures the scrollable document. Wait for a stable page signal before capture and use the documented animation, masking, or style options if dynamic regions interfere. - The state file is missing. Run the setup phase first and ensure the parent directory exists and the process can write to it. The example creates the directory before saving state.

No. Playwright’s authentication guide says sessionStorage is not persisted by the built-in storage-state mechanism; use its documented save-and-restore approach with page evaluation and an init script when needed.
