For a prerecorded fireplace stream you want to keep live without leaving a computer and home internet running, a cloud encoder is usually the better operational fit. A home PC running OBS can be a sensible way to test the idea if you already have suitable hardware, stable wired internet and time to monitor it. Neither setup guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner on cost or uptime.
What changes when you choose cloud or home encoding?
A YouTube live broadcast needs an encoder: software on a computer or a standalone device that prepares video for streaming. YouTube’s setup connects the encoder to the broadcast with a stream URL and stream key. In a home-PC setup, the computer encodes and sends the video over your home internet. In a cloud setup, a provider handles continuous playout and delivery, so your home PC and home upload connection are no longer part of the ongoing broadcast path. You still depend on the cloud provider and YouTube.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded-video streams without a dedicated PC. That listing identifies an option; it is not a YouTube endorsement or a guarantee of service availability. Compare current provider details before choosing.
Which setup fits your fireplace stream?
| Decision point | Home PC with OBS | Cloud encoder |
|---|---|---|
| What must stay available | The computer, local power, home network and upload connection, OBS, and the source video. OBS documents dropped frames when a connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | The cloud service and YouTube. The home computer and home upload connection are removed from the continuous playout path; the stream can still be interrupted by provider or YouTube problems. |
| Setup | Configure YouTube Live and an encoder, then set up the source and loop in the software. | Upload or configure prerecorded content with a provider that supports YouTube live playout. Confirm its media and streaming controls. |
| Attention while live | Plan to monitor the computer, sleep or update behavior, network drops and recovery after a failure. | You need less attention to home equipment, but should check the provider’s monitoring, restart/reconnect behavior and failure notifications. |
| Cost | Depends on whether you already own the equipment, plus electricity, internet, maintenance and any backup hardware. No comparable total-cost figures are established. | Depends on the provider’s current plan, storage, stream count and terms. No comparable price figures are established. |
| Best suited to | Testing, a non-critical stream, or a creator with suitable existing equipment who accepts local monitoring and failure risks. | A creator who prioritizes removing the home computer and home upload connection from the always-on path. |
The choice is about where the video is played and encoded, not about rights or platform rules. You need permission to use the fireplace footage and any music in it, a valid YouTube Live setup, and YouTube availability whichever approach you choose.

When a home PC is a reasonable choice
A local setup is a practical starting point if your computer and internet connection are already available and you are comfortable looking after them. A simple fireplace loop may require less scene processing than a complex production, but there is no supported minimum PC specification here; performance depends on the actual video, OBS settings and computer.
Set up and operate the local path
- Prepare the video and rights. Use footage and audio you have the rights to stream. Check that the file plays correctly before building the broadcast.
- Set up a YouTube Live broadcast. Create the broadcast in YouTube Live and connect OBS using the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Add the footage to OBS. Configure a media source for the prerecorded video and set up the intended repeat behavior. Confirm the loop works before going live; do not assume a stopped source will restart itself.
- Choose output settings your connection can sustain. OBS advises using a wired connection and setting bitrate within stable upload capacity. Check actual sustained upload performance rather than relying on the advertised maximum; leave capacity for normal variation and other household traffic.
- Check encoding performance. Watch OBS statistics for dropped frames and encoding overload. OBS recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate if encoding performance is inadequate. Make one change at a time and check the result.
- Prevent avoidable interruptions. Keep the computer from sleeping, arrange a restart plan for OBS or the PC, and account for operating-system updates, local power loss and router or ISP interruptions. A UPS can help with a local power interruption, but not an ISP, YouTube or encoder failure.
- Monitor after launch. Check both OBS and the YouTube live control room. Decide who will notice a disconnect and how they will restart the source and broadcast; a running-looking OBS window alone does not prove viewers are receiving the stream.
When a cloud encoder is the better fit
Choose a cloud workflow when the main goal is to avoid keeping a home computer and home upload connection in the continuous broadcast path. YouTube lists Gyre for continuous prerecorded-video streaming without a dedicated PC. Before subscribing to any provider, verify its current YouTube integration, supported file formats and codecs, looping behavior, monitoring and recovery, maximum stream duration, storage, plan limits, price and cancellation terms. These details vary by service and are not established by YouTube’s listing.

Copyright, looping and YouTube archives
A fireplace video can still create copyright problems if its footage, sound recording or background music is not yours or properly licensed. A cloud encoder does not change who owns the material or what permissions you need. Review the rights for every visual and audio element before streaming.
YouTube’s help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream longer than that will be saved as one complete replay; check YouTube’s current guidance if an archive matters to you.

Troubleshooting a stream that stalls or drops
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames in OBS | Unstable connection or bitrate beyond sustainable upload capacity. | Use wired networking, check sustained upload, and lower the bitrate to a level the connection can reliably maintain. |
| Encoding overload or choppy output | The computer cannot render or encode reliably at the selected output settings. | Reduce output resolution or frame rate in OBS, then monitor statistics again. |
| The broadcast stops when nobody is home | Local power, computer sleep, update, network or source failure. | Review power and sleep settings, the source loop, restart behavior and monitoring plan. A UPS only addresses local power loss. |
| A cloud stream stops | Provider-side, integration or YouTube interruption. | Check the provider’s status, alerts and documented reconnect behavior, then check the YouTube live control room. Confirm recovery behavior with the provider before relying on it. |
| No complete archive appears | The live stream may have exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window. | For streams longer than 12 hours, consult current YouTube guidance rather than assuming one complete replay will be available. |
