For a PS5, a USB SSD can store PS4 games and archive PS5 games, but you must copy a PS5 game back to console storage before playing it. If you want expanded storage for games you can play directly, consider a compatible internal M.2 SSD. Xbox rules vary by model, so check official guidance for your specific console.
How to decide whether 2TB is enough
Start with what you will store, not a promised number of games. Games and other files vary in size, and there is no reliable universal game-count estimate for a 2TB drive. Compare the space your current library uses with the files you expect to add, then decide whether you are comfortable moving or deleting items as the drive fills.

- Use the drive for a selected set of large games or general files: 2TB may be a practical add-on.
- Keep a large, growing library installed at once: check your current usage and expected additions before buying.
- For a console, decide whether the drive is for games you play directly or for storing and transferring them; the answer differs by device.
Is 2TB enough for a PC?
For a PC, 2TB can be a reasonable extra allocation for games and files, but your own installed library is the best guide. Windows can show how storage is being used and lets you choose where new content is saved.
Check current space use in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Storage to review storage use by drive and category. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance explains the available storage views and cleanup options.
- Estimate what you will add, including games, downloads, media, and other files you want on the external drive.
- In Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved, choose a location for supported new content. This does not automatically move every existing game or file; use each app or game launcher’s own settings when needed. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing where new content is saved.
A 2TB portable external SSD can serve as a library or file drive, provided its interface and compatibility suit your PC. As one product example, PlayStation Direct lists the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD in a 2TB capacity for PS5 and PC and advertises read speeds of up to 1000 MB/s. That number is the listing’s maximum claim, not an independent test result or a guarantee of the speed you will see on your setup.

What a 2TB external SSD can do on PS5
PlayStation supports compatible SuperSpeed USB extended storage from 250GB through 8TB. The drive’s role depends on whether the game is for PS4 or PS5.
| Content on a PS5 | Can it stay on USB extended storage? | Can you play it directly from USB? |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 games | Yes, when stored on compatible USB extended storage. | Yes. |
| PS5 games | Yes, as an archive. | No. Copy the game back to console storage to play it. |
PlayStation Support puts the PS5 restriction plainly: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” See its USB extended storage guidance for PS5 for compatibility and use details.

When an external SSD makes sense
Choose USB storage if you want to keep PS4 games available to play or hold PS5 games until you are ready to transfer them back. This can help manage space, but moving a PS5 game back and forth is part of the process.
When to consider internal M.2 expansion
If your priority is more storage for PS5 games you can play from console storage, an internal compatible M.2 SSD is a different option from a USB drive. PlayStation Direct lists the 2TB WD Black SN850P as an officially licensed internal NVMe SSD for PS5 and advertises up to 2TB of additional storage. Follow PlayStation’s current installation and compatibility requirements before choosing or installing an internal drive.

What about Xbox?
Do not assume PS5’s USB-storage rules apply to Xbox. External-drive behavior depends on the exact Xbox model, and the official model-specific guidance is needed to determine whether a given drive can store or run particular games. Check the current support information for your console before treating a 2TB external SSD as active game storage.

Quick decision checklist
- PC: Check Windows storage use and estimate the files and games you will add; do not rely on a fixed game-count promise.
- PS5, mostly PS4 games: Compatible USB extended storage can be used for storage and direct play.
- PS5, PS5 games: USB storage is for archiving and transfer, not direct play; consider compatible internal M.2 expansion if direct access is the goal.
- Xbox: Verify the rule for your exact model with official support guidance.
- Any device: Confirm the specific SSD’s interface and compatibility before purchase.
