The figure may be a processor’s base frequency, or it may apply only to one type of core in a hybrid CPU. Find the exact processor model and generation, then compare results for the tasks you actually do. Intel cautions that base frequency is not a suitable way to compare processors across different product lines or generations.
What does 1.60 GHz mean?
Gigahertz (GHz) measures clock frequency, not how much useful work a processor completes in a given time. Real-world performance also depends on factors such as processor architecture, instructions per cycle, features, and effective operating speeds. Intel describes base frequency as a legacy parameter and warns against using it to rank processors from different lines or generations. Intel’s explanation of processor base frequency was last reviewed on April 4, 2022.

It also matters which frequency a product listing shows. “Base frequency,” “maximum turbo frequency,” and a frequency for a particular core type describe different things. A maximum turbo specification is not a promise that the processor will sustain that speed during every task.
Why the same 1.6 GHz figure can describe different CPUs
Hybrid processors can have performance cores and efficient cores with different frequencies. For example, Intel’s specifications for the Core 5 210H list a 1.6 GHz efficient-core base frequency alongside four performance cores with a 2.2 GHz base frequency. The processor has eight efficient cores and 12 total threads; its listed maximum turbo frequencies are 4.8 GHz for the processor and 3.6 GHz for its efficient cores. Those are specifications for that processor—not a general description of laptops advertised at 1.60 GHz. See Intel’s Series 1 and Series 2 laptop processor comparison chart.

How to tell whether a 1.60 GHz laptop will suit you
- Identify the complete processor name. A frequency is not a model name. Look up the CPU model and generation in the laptop’s specifications or system information, then check Intel’s laptop processor comparison chart.
- Check what the frequency refers to. Determine whether 1.60 GHz is a base frequency, a maximum turbo frequency, or a figure for performance or efficient cores. Hybrid processor specifications may give separate figures for each core type.
- Compare performance for your own workload. Everyday browsing and office work, gaming, and video editing place different demands on a system. Look for benchmarks that reflect the applications or games you use, rather than relying on clock speed alone. Intel’s CPU selection guidance for gaming also points out that GPU and RAM matter for gaming.
- Compare complete configurations. When weighing two laptops, consider each exact CPU model and generation, core configuration where applicable, relevant task benchmarks, and other components that affect your workload. A processor-only specification does not describe the whole laptop.
What the number can—and can’t—tell you
- It can identify one processor specification. Read it in context: the figure may apply to a particular core type or describe a base rather than turbo frequency.
- It can’t establish that a laptop is fast or slow. The processor model, generation, design, and task all matter.
- It can’t rank CPUs across generations by itself. Intel specifically advises against comparing processors across product lines or generations using base frequency.
- It can’t predict every workload. Use relevant benchmarks, and account for components such as graphics hardware and memory when the task depends on them.
