Is 720p Good Enough for YouTube Live Streaming?

720p can be enough for YouTube Live when it keeps the picture legible and the stream stable. Compare YouTube's recommended bitrates, codec settings, and when to consider 1080p.

Yes—720p can be good enough for YouTube Live if the picture stays clear enough for your content and your connection can sustain a reliable stream. It is a sensible choice for talking-head videos and simple presentations; gameplay with small interface text or demonstrations with fine detail may benefit from 1080p, provided your upload connection can support it.

When 720p is enough—and when it is not

Think about what viewers need to see, not just the resolution number. A presenter speaking to camera or slides with large text can often work well at 720p. Small on-screen text, intricate visuals, or fast-moving gameplay can make added detail more valuable, so consider 1080p if your connection and encoder can maintain it.

Reliability matters: a higher-resolution stream that drops frames or interrupts is not automatically better than a stable 720p stream. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your internet connection and testing before going live. These are practical trade-offs, not a claim that one resolution is preferred by all viewers.

YouTube transcodes a live input into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Your 720p ingest setting therefore does not mean every viewer receives exactly 720p playback.

What bitrate should you use for 720p YouTube Live?

YouTube’s current English-language encoder settings table recommends the following video bitrates. They are encoder configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of the internet upload speed every household needs. Allow headroom for normal connection variation and test your setup.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265/HEVC recommended H.264 recommended Minimum listed: AV1 or H.265/HEVC Minimum listed: H.264
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 3 Mbps

1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps not stated in YouTube’s cited settings table not stated in YouTube’s cited settings table

Values are from YouTube’s live encoder settings table: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The higher 1080p recommendations illustrate the additional bitrate budget to plan for; they do not guarantee a particular visual improvement on every stream.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings

Match resolution to the source and the detail viewers need

Choose 720p when it preserves the important visual information and is the more dependable setting for your connection. Consider 1080p when fine detail is central and you can sustain its higher recommended bitrate. The source video or camera, encoder output settings, and YouTube ingest settings all need to support the resolution you intend to send.

Choose 30 or 60 fps for the motion in your stream

YouTube supports up to 60 fps. For a mostly stationary presenter or presentation, 30 fps may be sufficient; for fast motion, 60 fps can look smoother if your encoder and connection handle it reliably. YouTube lists the same recommended 720p bitrate for 30 and 60 fps in its current table, but that does not mean every scene will look identical at either frame rate.

Set the remaining encoder options

  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live ingest. Use settings your encoder and workflow support.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio.

For the complete current guidance, see YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Test before the live event

  1. Set the encoder to the intended output. Choose 720p and 30 or 60 fps, select a supported codec, and enter the matching recommended bitrate and settings above.
  2. Test representative content. Include the real audio and the kind of movement viewers will see—such as a game, demonstration, or presentation—not only a static preview.
  3. Check the stream’s health. Look for dropped frames, interruptions, and audio problems while the test runs. If the stream is unstable, reduce the demands on the connection, such as choosing 720p instead of 1080p or 30 fps instead of 60 fps, and test again.
  4. Confirm the result before the event. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Follow its current steps for connecting your encoder and starting a test or live stream.

Common problems and what to change

  • The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: The connection may not sustain the selected stream settings consistently. Test at a lower output demand—such as 720p rather than 1080p—and monitor stream health again.
  • Small text or fine details are hard to make out: Check that the source itself is sufficiently detailed and that the encoder is sending the intended resolution. If your connection can sustain it, test 1080p at the applicable recommended bitrate.
  • Fast motion looks less smooth than expected: Test 60 fps if the encoder and connection can sustain it. If that causes instability, prioritize a reliable stream rather than forcing the higher frame rate.
  • The encoder cannot use the recommended codec: YouTube’s table gives separate recommendations for H.264 and for AV1/H.265. Use the row matching the codec you actually send rather than applying the other codec’s bitrate.
  • Viewers report different playback quality: YouTube creates multiple output formats from the live input, so playback resolution can vary by viewer device and network.
