If you regularly work with large creative projects, several demanding apps at once, development tools and simulators, virtual machines, or local machine-learning workloads, consider configuring 24GB or 32GB instead. Those are practical workload guidelines, not Apple-published minimums.
What memory configurations does the 2026 MacBook Air offer?
Apple lists 16GB of unified memory as standard on both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with M5, with 24GB and 32GB configuration options for each. These are purchase configurations, not evidence that every workload will run comfortably on 16GB. Check the exact screen size, chip, and available options on Apple’s MacBook Air specifications page before buying, since product configurations can change.

Apple calls it unified memory. Use that term when comparing configurations: the page lists memory options, but does not establish that the memory can be upgraded after purchase.

For browsing, documents, email, schoolwork, messaging, video calls, streaming, and a typical mix of everyday apps, 16GB is a sensible fit. The more important question is whether your own combination of apps and project sizes routinely strains memory—not whether a particular job title or app automatically requires an upgrade.

Consider 24GB or 32GB if your normal work often combines memory-heavy creative apps and large projects, development environments and simulators, virtual machines, or multiple demanding applications at once. More memory adds headroom, but the available evidence does not establish a universal minimum for any of these workloads.
Should you get 16GB or 24GB/32GB?
| Factor | 16GB is more likely to fit | Consider 24GB or 32GB |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Everyday apps and ordinary multitasking | Large creative projects, virtual machines, development tools, or other demanding work |
| Apps open together | A typical mix of lighter applications | Several demanding applications running concurrently |
| Observed memory pressure | Mostly green during representative work | Yellow or red pressure recurring during the work that matters to you |
| Ownership plans | You are comfortable choosing for your current needs | You expect years of use and value extra headroom as projects or software needs change; this is a purchasing judgment, not a guarantee |
| Configuration and budget | The standard configuration meets your needs and priorities | The extra capacity is worth its incremental cost to you; a current price comparison is not stated on Apple’s specifications page |
There is no published statistic establishing what share of MacBook Air owners need more than 16GB, and no cited benchmark comparing these capacities across workloads. Treat the table as a way to weigh your own use, not a pass/fail test.

How to check memory pressure on a Mac you already use
- Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or find it with Spotlight.
- Select the Memory tab.
- Use the Mac as you normally would for the demanding tasks you care about, and watch the memory-pressure graph over time rather than judging a single snapshot.
- Note whether pressure is persistently yellow or red and whether that coincides with slowdowns or apps reloading.
Apple says memory pressure is determined by free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and cached files. macOS can compress inactive memory and use startup-disk space for swap; cached files can be reclaimed. So a high “memory used” or “swap used” reading on its own does not prove you need more RAM. Apple’s guide describes green pressure as efficient use, yellow as a sign the Mac might eventually need more memory, and red as a sign it needs more. See Apple’s Activity Monitor memory-usage guidance and Apple’s guide to checking whether a Mac needs more RAM.

No. A USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 dock can expand desk connectivity, but it cannot increase the MacBook Air’s unified-memory capacity. Choose memory based on the work you run, not the peripherals you connect.
