12:00 PM means noon. By convention, 12:00 AM means midnight. But both labels can cause confusion at the day boundary, so for an important appointment or deadline, write “noon” or “midnight” with the date—or use an explicit 24-hour time.

Does 12:00 PM mean noon or midnight?

12:00 PM conventionally means noon; 12:00 AM conventionally means midnight. In the usual 12-hour clock, a.m. labels the hours before noon and p.m. labels the hours after noon. The exact boundary is awkward: noon is neither before nor after itself, and midnight sits between calendar days.

The Unicode Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR) defines the day periods as midnight at 00:00, AM from 00:00 up to but not including 12:00, noon at 12:00, and PM from 12:00 up to but not including 24:00. Unicode CLDR day-period rules therefore align 12:00 PM with noon and 12:00 AM with midnight.

Why do 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. cause confusion?

The abbreviations come from Latin: ante meridiem means “before noon,” and post meridiem means “after noon.” At exactly 12, the labels seem to ask whether noon is before or after noon. Midnight presents a similar problem because it is both the end of one day and the beginning of the next.

For that reason, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) says that “12 a.m. and 12 p.m. are ambiguous and should not be used.” Its time-of-day FAQ recommends using “noon” or “midnight” instead when clarity matters.

What does “midnight on Friday” mean?

It can mean the instant Friday begins or the instant Friday ends. NIST gives “midnight on Friday, October 20th” as an example of wording that could refer to either boundary. Unicode CLDR likewise notes that midnight may refer to 00:00, the start of a day, or 24:00, its end. In practice, a reader may not know which one the writer intends.

How should you write noon, midnight, and deadlines?

Choose wording that makes the intended day boundary unmistakable. For ordinary prose, Chicago style guidance generally recommends writing “noon” and “midnight” rather than using numerals for those exact times. The Chicago Manual of Style’s guidance on noon and midnight offers this editorial approach.

  • For contracts, schedules, and operational deadlines: use an explicit date and 24-hour time. NIST describes 0000 as midnight at the beginning of a date and 2400 as the end of that date.
  • When readers may not expect 24-hour time: spell out the boundary or give a nearby unambiguous time, such as 11:59 p.m. or 12:01 a.m. Microsoft gives these as ways to avoid ambiguity in its date and time format guidance.

ISO 8601 uses a consistent order—year, month, day, then hour, minute, and smaller time units—to help reduce date-and-time convention ambiguity. ISO’s overview of the date and time format explains that structure. Whatever format you use, include enough date information that the reader can tell which day the time belongs to.

Which time wording is clearest?

Wording Ambiguity risk Date boundary clear? Best suited to
12:00 PM / 12:00 AM Higher at the noon and midnight boundaries; NIST advises avoiding these labels when precision matters. No. The time alone does not identify which calendar date is intended. Casual use where the convention is understood and the date is obvious.
Noon / midnight with a date Lower for noon; midnight may still need “beginning of” or “end of” the named date. Usually, if the date and intended boundary are stated. General writing, invitations, and everyday schedules.
24-hour time with an explicit date Lower when the notation is understood and the date is included. Yes, when the time and date are paired; 0000 and 2400 can distinguish the start and end boundary in NIST’s guidance. Precise schedules, deadlines, and operational instructions.

For a high-consequence deadline, do not rely on “midnight Friday” or a bare “12 a.m.” State the date and the intended boundary in a format your audience understands.
