IRL Pro vs. FFmpeg on a VPS for YouTube Looping: Which Fits?

IRL Pro fits live Android broadcasts; FFmpeg on a VPS is the closer fit for replaying prerecorded video. Here’s how their setup and operational demands differ.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on what you want YouTube to show: IRL Pro is an Android app for broadcasting a live phone feed; FFmpeg on a VPS is the more relevant approach for repeatedly sending prerecorded video. They solve different source-media problems, so this is not a like-for-like reliability contest. If your goal is a prerecorded video running continuously without maintaining a server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

What “YouTube looping” means in this comparison

A live phone camera feed and a prerecorded video that repeats are different inputs. The distinction determines which method fits before you consider protocols, setup effort, or cost.

What you want to send Better fit to discuss What the available documentation establishes
A live view from an Android phone IRL Pro Google Play describes IRL Pro as an Android streaming app for YouTube, Twitch, and other services. Its setup documentation covers broadcasting to a stream endpoint using RTMP or SRT; it does not document a prerecorded-file looping workflow.
A prerecorded video repeated continuously FFmpeg on a VPS A community discussion gives an example using FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option to repeat an MP4 while streaming to YouTube. That example does not establish a complete server operations setup.

IRL Pro may fit if “looping” is being used loosely to mean keeping a live phone feed on air. If you mean replaying a file, the FFmpeg approach is closer to the task. Neither source establishes that one is more reliable or cheaper overall.

What both methods need from YouTube

For either encoder path, YouTube’s setup instructions require the stream URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder. The encoder sends the feed to YouTube; keep the stream key private because someone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Use compatible ingest settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its settings page lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio. Match the selected settings to the encoder and the stream you intend to send; do not treat example plan limits from a third-party IRL guide as universal YouTube requirements.

IRL Pro’s RTMP/SRT details come from an Enhanced IRL setup guide. In that described workflow, the protocol and URL must match the configured endpoint, and the connection is single rather than bonded. This is guidance for that documented stream-key setup, not proof that every IRL Pro configuration behaves identically. The guide’s bitrate caps apply to particular Enhanced IRL plans, not to IRL Pro or YouTube in general.

Using IRL Pro for a live Android feed

  1. Confirm the source and device. IRL Pro is Android software; check its current Google Play listing and compatibility information for your device before relying on it. The listing reports an app update on September 18, 2024, but app availability and Android compatibility can change.
  2. Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live control room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream URL and key. Keep the key confidential.
  3. Configure IRL Pro for the endpoint. Enter the YouTube ingest details in the app, selecting a supported protocol and using the matching URL. The documented Enhanced IRL guide describes RTMP and SRT; confirm the options shown in your current app and YouTube setup.
  4. Choose compatible encoding settings. Use YouTube’s recommended ingest settings as the reference, including constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval where the app exposes those controls.
  5. Start the phone broadcast and verify it in YouTube. Begin sending from the encoder and check the live control room for a healthy incoming feed before sharing the live page.

This path is for broadcasting a live phone source. The cited IRL Pro material does not show how to select an MP4 and loop it indefinitely.

Running FFmpeg on a VPS for prerecorded video

The cited example from a Reddit community discussion uses -stream_loop -1 to loop an MP4 and send it to YouTube. Treat it as a community example, not a complete, verified deployment recipe: the available evidence does not settle the full command for your encoder, VPS sizing, restart supervision, reconnection behavior, monitoring, or current hosting cost.

  1. Prepare the media and hosting environment. Make sure the VPS can access the video and has enough capacity for the encoding workload and outbound stream. No specific server size or provider is established here.
  2. Get the YouTube ingest details. Create or select a live stream in YouTube and copy its stream URL and private stream key.
  3. Build and validate the FFmpeg invocation. Follow the looping pattern shown in the community example, adapting the input, YouTube endpoint, codecs, and ingest settings to your media and current YouTube requirements. Verify the command with a controlled test rather than assuming a snippet works unchanged on every server.
  4. Start the process and confirm the feed. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s live control room to make sure the stream is arriving and audio/video behave as intended.
  5. Plan how the process will be operated. Decide how you will detect a failed process or dropped connection, restart it, monitor the stream, and keep the VPS available. The example does not document a supervisor or automatic recovery arrangement.

A VPS gives you control over the media pipeline, but you are responsible for the server process and its operational plan. The cited evidence does not establish a universal VPS price, a suitable machine size, or whether this method costs less than an app or managed service.

Plan for streams longer than 12 hours

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A separate YouTube live-production PDF says streams longer than 12 hours should be recorded by the team for manual upload. For an ongoing loop, do not assume YouTube will preserve one complete archive: decide how you will record the source or output and handle manual uploading when needed.

IRL Pro’s Play listing describes the app as serving YouTube, Twitch, and other services; this article’s setup comparison concerns YouTube. App updates and compatibility may change, and the listing’s terms do not promise compatibility with every Android version or future update.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded YouTube looping without keeping a phone or VPS process running at home, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video to YouTube, not live camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
