IPv6 Test: Check Your Browser’s Connection and Fix Failures

A quick browser test can show whether your current connection reaches IPv6—but it cannot certify every device, app, or network setting.

Open test-ipv6.com in the browser you want to check and run its simple test. It can show whether that browser’s current connection reaches IPv4, IPv6, or both. A passing result is useful evidence of IPv6 connectivity on that path—not proof that every device, app, router setting, or firewall is ready to work without IPv4.

Run the 10-second IPv6 check

  1. Open test-ipv6.com on the device and network you want to check. The page needs JavaScript and cross-site scripts for the full test.
  2. Run the simple test and note whether it reports IPv4, IPv4 plus IPv6, or IPv6 connectivity.
  3. Read the result as a test of this browser’s current connection path. It does not test every device connected to your Wi-Fi.
  4. If the result is unexpected or you want more detail, run the page’s detailed test. It checks access to IPv4-only, IPv6-only, and dual-stack endpoints, large-packet handling, and whether the ISP resolver can reach IPv6-only authoritative DNS.

test-ipv6.com describes its test this way: “The combination of successes and failures tells a story about how ready you are for when publishers start offering their web sites on IPv6.” That is the site’s description of what its checks indicate, not a certification that an entire network is ready for IPv6-only operation.

What the results show

IPv4 works, but IPv6 is not demonstrated

An IPv4-only result means the tested browser reached IPv4 endpoints but did not demonstrate IPv6 connectivity. The result alone cannot identify whether the cause is the ISP, router, device, VPN, DNS, or filtering configuration.

Both IPv4 and IPv6 work

A dual-stack result means this tested path can reach services over both IP versions. RFC 6586 defines dual-stack as full support for both protocols in hosts and routers. For an ordinary household connection, seeing both is practical evidence that IPv6-enabled services can work while IPv4 compatibility remains available.

IPv6 works, but a detailed check fails

Look at the name of the failed check rather than treating all failures as equivalent. The detailed test separates basic IPv6 reachability from dual-stack behavior, large-packet handling, and resolver behavior. The site describes its ISP-resolver check as bonus information, not a critical requirement for reaching IPv6 websites today.

Websites load, but performance seems inconsistent

That experience does not necessarily establish that IPv6 is healthy. Happy Eyeballs allows dual-stack clients to try address-family connections in parallel or race them, reducing user-visible delay when one path is blocked, broken, or slower. RFC 8305 explains that this approach can help clients establish a connection more quickly; successful fallback can therefore mask an IPv6 path problem during casual browsing.

What a quick pass cannot certify

An IPv6 pass is a reachability check, not an IPv6-only readiness audit. It cannot establish that all household devices and applications support IPv6, that every network path is configured correctly, or that IPv4 can safely be disabled. RFC 6586 documented practical issues such as applications without IPv6 support and bugs in untested code. Its authors recommended dual-stack for general-purpose networking in that April 2012 document; that is a dated recommendation, not a timeless rule for every deployment.

What to do if IPv6 fails

  1. Repeat the check on another device using the same network, then on a different network if available. This helps determine whether the result is limited to one tested path, though it does not by itself identify the cause.
  2. Run the detailed test and note which specific checks fail. A DNS-resolver or large-packet result is different from a failure to reach an IPv6-only endpoint.
  3. If the issue persists across devices on your home connection, ask your internet provider whether IPv6 is available and enabled for your service. Share the specific failed test rather than describing the connection simply as “not ready.”
  4. Avoid changing router settings based on one browser result alone. The test does not isolate the cause, and an individual diagnosis depends on the devices and network configuration involved.

The test page cautions that it is not for security or forensic analysis. Use it to check reachability, not to assess whether a connection is secure or to diagnose an incident.

Household checks and operator measurements are different

A browser test answers a narrow question about one current connection path. An operator-facing measure such as RIPE NCC’s RIPEness framework tracks organizational IPv6 deployment indicators, including IPv6 resources, routing visibility, route6 and reverse-DNS configuration, and a measured use indicator for participating organizations. RIPE NCC describes RIPEness as a prototype, best-effort service for its members, not a consumer test of home Wi-Fi.

Likewise, adoption percentages describe their own populations and methods. Google says its continuously measured statistic is the percentage of Google users accessing Google over IPv6. A search result dated 5 September 2026 showed 50.30%; that dated value should not be read as the share of all internet users, networks, or traffic, and Google’s live chart may change. Separately, RFC 9386, published in 2023, estimated IPv6-capable users at 29.5% as of January 2022. These figures use different measures and dates, so they are not directly comparable.
