A VPN browser extension can protect browser traffic, but it does not automatically protect other apps. Brave supports Chrome Web Store extensions, yet says it cannot vouch for their security or data handling. No comparative extension tests are established here, so there is no evidence-based “best” extension or speed ranking.
Does Brave work with VPN extensions?
Yes. Brave says Chrome Web Store extensions work in its browser. That establishes compatibility, not safety or quality: Brave warns that some extensions can bring security risks and says it cannot vouch for third-party extensions’ security, privacy, or handling of data. Before installing one, check the publisher, the permissions requested, and the provider’s privacy documentation. Brave’s extension guidance explains its position.

Does a VPN extension protect all my device traffic?
No—not by default. A browser extension can cover activity in the browser where it is installed, while other apps and browsers continue to make their own connections. Proton’s support documentation says its extension works in Brave and protects browser activity, but does not cover connections made by other apps or browsers, including system updates. That is a documented example; check the stated scope of any extension you consider rather than assuming they all work identically. Proton’s extension guide describes its coverage.

Brave Firewall + VPN is presented differently: Brave says it encrypts internet traffic and protects apps beyond the Brave browser. The distinction is scope. Choose a browser extension when browser-only protection is what you need; look for a device-wide VPN when you want protection for connections from other apps too.

How should you choose a VPN for Brave?
- Set the coverage you need: Decide whether you need protection only for browser activity or across the device’s apps.
- Check device support: Confirm that the service supports your operating system and the number of devices you plan to use.
- Review extension permissions: For an extension, assess the publisher, requested permissions, and privacy documentation. Installation in Brave alone does not establish that an extension is safe.
- Read the provider’s scope and privacy claims: Separate what the provider says from what has been independently verified, and note exactly what any audit covers.
- Compare current terms: Prices, trials, features, and availability can change; verify them with the provider before subscribing.
There is no grounded basis here to declare one Brave-compatible extension the fastest or best: no reproducible comparative tests, leak checks, or reliability results are available. Proton is a documented example of a compatible browser extension, not a tested winner. Its extension product page describes its product and plan options.
